Likewise for Kaede, who had a love that was born out of the intense guilt she felt over her treatment of him. Would it have been fair for her? They would never have been able to move past their tragic past. The most valuable lesson he learned was to keep moving forward. He cared for her, but not romantically. As for the god/demon it would have been cruel to pick Sia over Nerine (since they were mirror rivals) and vice versa; so the writers went with neither. Asa was the best, and logical choice.

Rin chose Asa before he was even aware of her chronic illness. He was always kind of oblivious and believed Asa's bogus reasons for her fainting spells (the heat, too tired, etc.). Ultimately, he picked the one he was genuinely in love with. Kaede had an unhealthy obsession stemming from their shared traumatic past; and it would have been epically detrimental to the two of them for any kind of intimate involvement. Would having a gf who was mentally unstable be fair for Rin?
