A standard 70's Jazz bass with maple and ash, Bartolini TCT preamp, bad ass bridge, DR fat beams and you have exactly what he has. If you sound any different to Marcus then is all ability.
Marcus is more than just technique, he has soul/rhythm/feeling/articulation/note placement/ a monster tone. and his slap atyle is efficient. Not a lot of wasted movement. He is more than show. Moreso than a lot of slappers he has substance. ask any cat who can slap for real
@phillybass101 This is very true. It irratates me how some bass players fall to the notion that if you play slap and do a fast oct run it's great. usually it sounds very corny. I think your term substance is right on.
C'mon FOLKS! Marcus can Play, and the way we ALL play is as unique and as different as OUR FINGERPRINT! Marcus, like a lotta cats could use some work, as He is hooked in to the Clique of cats thats constantly gigging, as the rest is illusion. Just remember when you use Picstacotto you don't let your G string Execution Overshadow your open E Thumb syncopation, or Overplay. What Marcus is doing is COOL, believe me, but I was doing that the first 4 months I was playing; good showman; Alot of hype.
@ Loukana and all viewers who's perception may be similar, check out the youtube video of Marcus Miller w/ Miles Davis. He is a beast at fingerboard technique. Sometimes when listening to his recordings, it is difficult for me to detect when he's playing fingerboard style and when he's popping and slapping.
More guitar players need to study Hiram. He is a great example of a guitar player under control. It is so tempting to want to take over as a guitar player, but he always serves the music.
i agree. something about his playing style here seems way too loose, especially when he gets to the solo. Love the aggressive and tight playing of his older versions more.
for the slap i think it's mostly the technique that makes u sound good or not because it's quite hard and u need to train a lot. but of course u have a better sound if u play on a fender Jbass marcus miller signature^^
@loukana I agree. It's all how you play an instrument, not the "rep" it gets from magazine reviewers; likewise, a shitty student fender can be made to play just like the highest end gibson. it just takes the heart. remember that, kids.
the technique but slap is a hard technique to get a really good sound so you'll be probably only 2 years getting a good sound and still working on it but you can't really slap with any bass like i play an ibanez at school but a fender 70's jazz bass at home and the sound of the slap on the fender is 100000000 times better than on that shitty ibanez
Actually, the sound comes from several different things. Technique is first, you can sound good on any bass if you have your technique down. After that, you need really good pickups, certain pickups were made for certain sounds in a guitar. Then comes the amplifier. If you want to sound anything Marcus, you need a well balanced amp with good high and low frequencies. With a good combination of technique, pickups, and an amp, you will sound great. I know from lots of experience.
It is not only that, it is what you do with the instrument and amps. Music is emotion, if you put emotion in your music (like Marcus) than you get a good sound. Even with cheap stuff you can get a good sound. With my Ampeg BA-115T and a Fender Jazz (made in Korea) you can get the same sound as Marcus.
These guys really rock!I heard this song 1st on a tape. And it made me groove.Hats off to y'all.Keep the groove rollin marcus. And Hiram,Luv your playin.Just do some sits ups.haha
