What i'm trying to say that when the first hunter-gatherer people wearing animal skin and carrying wooden spears arrived to Japan, i don't think they really cared if there was mineral resources on the island, since they didn't know how to use them.

As far as I know there was only one functioning installation in the area so when they reported their sighting, it was easy to dismiss it without any other confirmation. I dont mean to defend the Imperial Japs in WWII, but Japans main goal was to conquer Asia, not the Pacific Islands. But in order to conquer Asia they needed to capture oil and supplies from the Dutch East Indies, and to do that, they needed to eliminate all British, American, and Australian presences on other islands to prevent those forces there from flanking them. They also needed to eliminate the US Pacific Fleet, which was much more powerful at the time. Thats where Pearl Harbor came in.

@gonojaja While everything did come down to to The Emperor (and yes he did want war as you clarify), he had Yamamoto devise a battle plan, which was to knock out the ships at pearl harbor. The specific battle plan was Yamamoto's doing, with out it, I would think it's safe to say the arizona wouldn't be a memorial. It's a very broad topic as there are way to many leads as whom to blame is. From a military, tactical standpoint, it was Yamamoto's plan, and Admiral Nagumo's carriers.

Pearl harbor was to destoy equipment, which by tthe standards of war, is pretty humane. The atomic bombs were to destoy EVERYTHING to scare japan's governement into surrendering. By definition the atomic bombs were terrorism.

The US did not approve of Japanese aggression in China and they declared an embargo on Japan. This means they would stop supplying Japan with raw materials. So where would Japan get their resources to continue the war now?plus Japan was who attacked first not USA.

@DII117 As for radar Radar was a relatively new and to many of the people involved unproven technology at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. As far as I know there was only one functioning installation in the area so when they reported their sighting, it was easy to dismiss it without any other confirmation. Apparently you do not know that US military was very active in South East Asia since 1898. Japan was a latecomer and was competing with Russia, France, UK and US for control of resources in East Asia. US put an economic embargo on Japan, pushing Japan to attack cuz if they didn't, that would mean their military would not have steel and fuel to survive

I dont mean to defend the Imperial Japs in WWII, but Japans main goal was to conquer Asia, not the Pacific Islands. But in order to conquer Asia they needed to capture oil and supplies from the Dutch East Indies, and to do that, they needed to eliminate all British, American, and Australian presences on other islands to prevent those forces there from flanking them. They also needed to eliminate the US Pacific Fleet, which was much more powerful at the time. Thats where Pearl Harbor came in.
