It's too bad they didn't have time in the LotR movie to cover at least what Sauron, Gandalf, and Saruman (also the Balrog) were. I know it wasn't in the book, but rather, the Silmarillion, but I still think it's too bad cause now there are a lot of very confused people out there who aren't going to learn the Tolkien mythology in a little 500 character paragraph. It's so sad. Go pick up a copy of the Silmarillion for like $10 and educate yourselves.

@OliByGolly1 Sauron was alive for hundreds of years? try alive since time immemorial, before the creation of the universe. And that person that got his head chopped off wasn't Sauron. As an Ainur and a Maiar (the same order of live as Gandalf and Saruman), Sauron is immortal and has "died" three times (once when Númenor was destroyed, then when Isildur cut off his ring, and then when the ring was destroyed). After this third "death" Sauron has lost all power and can never come back like before.

@Brandon5l9 These "spirits" are called Ainur (which is further broken down into Valar, the "gods" of middle earth, if you will and the Maiar, who were lesser Ainur who descended after Arda was completed to help a particular Vala.) Sauron was a Maia of Aulë, the smith. Interestingly, Saruman was also a Maia of Aulë. Eventually, Sauron was corrupted by Melkor (the most powerful Ainur) and was his 2nd in command along with Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs.

@Magnack13 Annatar was just the name he gave himself to trick the Elves of Eregion into thinking he wasn't Sauron (by this time, he was the enemy and they would never have made the rings if they knew who he was). Also, Sauron didn't have a "face." He was an angelic being and could (originally) take any form he wanted. After his body was destroyed in the fall of Númenor, he could never take a fair form again. During the movie, he's just a spirit, there's no physical being in his armor.

@ZulJim09 Neither. He's an angelic being, a spirit. There's a pantheon of gods, the Valar, who are served by lesser spirits, the Maiar. One of the Valar, Morgoth, rebelled, essentialy becoming the Satan of Middle-Earth. Sauron was originally a servant of a good Vala called Aulë, but he changed sides and joined Morgoth, becoming his second-in-command. The Valar defeated Morgoth but Sauron escaped. The Valar then send 5 other Maiar in M-E to fight against Sauron: you know them as the Wizards.
