  • which show is this ?

  • Best Kansas song ever

  • Mr. Walsh be wailin'. BIG time.........

  • The guy playing the paul is playing some major flavorings to this song. Sweet contrast

  • Pure Mastery .

One of 70's greatest progressive bands .

Steve's voice is in top form and having Kerry there makes it all the better .

I have this show but thanks for sharing with other Kansas fans

  • When I was training for the 1976 Olympic diving trials (10 meter platform), this was my motivational anthem!

  • I am sorry to hear about Steve Walsh's voice. I am new to this whole internet thing. I am totally enjoying rediscovering Kansas. I looked at kerry L Website. I knew he turned his focus to christian music, but not the name of his band or really anything at all about what music he produced. I am really on a voyage of rediscovery and loving it!!!

  • I love this song and Sweet! Thank you!!!!!

  • Thank you so to whoever it is who posted this wonderful video. Does anyone know present status of the band and if there are other early live videos available, commercially or otherwise?

  • @wwadsworthw There are several pretty recent Kansas videos. Unfortunately Steve Walsh has lost his voice throughout the years and his singing is nowhere near what he could do back in the 70's and early 80's.

There are several good videos on Youtube of Kansas back in their prime.

  • BACK THEN THERE WERE NO "AUTOTUNES" OR "PROTOOLS",,,,YOU HAD TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTE EVERY NIGHT ,,,EVERY CONCERT,,,!!

  • PURE MAGIC,,,!!!,,,,

  • One of the best songs by my favorite band of all time. "Carry on wayward son" saved my life, "The Wall" showed me how to live. And "Icarus" was a picure of my (inner) life as a bi-polar individual.

This is the music of my soul.

    reduce me to love

  • @wwadsworthw so great to hear someone else who loves Kansas as I do!

  • The fathers of advanced technical rock/metal genre

  • I cannot wait for the day i can compare a modern band born in the 2000s to this pure awesome music right here

  • @MrRawrin22 You should check out the band Isis. They're very prog oriented metal. But they have very groove oriented melodies and are very ambiant and ethereal. Think modern Pink Floyd, but heavier.

  • Yea, none of this three chord, three minute verse/chorus/verse chorus, repeat and fade, Groups like Kansas, Yes, Rush. they had a unique look, and sound to Rock.

  • @buddydogk9 well said. Those are my three bands nothing matches them.

  • @buddydogk9 You forgot early Genesis too !.. You´re right this prog-bands gave an unique sound to rock. Sorry about my english

  • Tomorrow Night Baby!!!!

  • could listen to this 2 million times back to back.

  • My favorite song from them. Got to see them live about 4 times over the years.

  • OK, one last thing. I played in a band and had a drummer who thought that he was the "Cat's Meow" - I'm just being nice. He thought he was Tommy Lee etc. So, he thought it would be cool to do some Kansas. That is until he actually listened to it. He realized Phil Ehart wouldn't be so easy to emulate. That was the end of that.

  • I should also be ashamed of myself for posting the same message twice. LOL. Anyway, I can'tsay enough good stuff about Kansas. I was blessed to see them in Barton Coliseum in or about 1976. One of my best friends and me saw them - he loves them too. It was FANTASTIC.

  • Well, to the promoters image meant something. Kansas was one of the best bands of all time. I should be ashamed of myself because I don't know all the members names. However, I do know that Rich Williams was one of the most underrated guitarist of all times as well as Phil Ehart being one of the most underrated drummers of all time. I'm sure probably neither one even gives a damn. They just did what they did and they were GREAT at it. And I'm sure they had fun too. - Valen

  • @MrRICK961 they are still great, underrated, and having fun

  • Rock legends. One of my favorite Kansas jams.

  • Prog rock doesn't get much better than this.

  • Sail on!!!!

  • It's just proggy goodness!!!

  • A very special band in its prime.

  • the best band of all time

  • BRILLIANT!!!

  • cosmic

  • Will always love this band. Phil, next to Neil Peart, is one of the best percussionists in the business !!!

  • A great live band. Steve Walsh's keyboard handstands were the highlight of the evening.

  • @MrUltraworld Abso-LUTE-ly! Any one who has never seen Kansas live missed a fantastic experience.

  • @MoDans The last time I saw them was in '89. A small hall. Steve Morse was in the band. They had the best live sound I have ever heard. Just before the show, they ushered in Steve Walsh in disguise to a seat in the first row. About 30 seconds into the first song, he stood up & started singing. Night Ranger was the warm up. There was no comparison, Kansas was so much better. That was a great night.

  • Thanks for posting this. Kansas are still the best !!! ... from Germany.

  • I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the product of healthy living, intense concentration into their craft, sweat, cooperation, feirce hearts, chemistry, and love.

  • @DamianEatsNails Couldn't have said it better.

  • Why aren't these Don K. Rock Concert shows not available on DVD!!!!!!

  • What an awesome time. Image meant nothing. Just the musicianship.

  • This is like 3x better than the studio version...if only music today could be like that.

  • @Angelus12308 There's still great music out there, it just takes some searching... Search youtube for "Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Ao vivo DVD)"

  • @spiral2012 Good find.

Yes there is good stuff, but not like in the 70's and 80's

BTW,there is one band that has dazzled me,they have a led zep-ish sound, listen to Rival sons-Pressure and time

  • Don Kirshner's Rock Concert fans . Did you know that Historic Films

in NY owns the entire Don Kirshner's library . If you would like to see

these shows made available give 'em an email .

Check out their website for contact info.

  • And all without autotune and post-production bullsnot. Incredible!!

  • Soooo underrated. Some of the most talented musicians i've ever heard. It's such a shame steve lost his high notes.

  • This is such a liberating song! When I listen to this, I feel like I'm flying! :D

  • and this is how a band should play live!!!!!!

  • This band is tight. Greatest Rock band & Rock show ever, They still put on a great show although Steve's voice can't hit those gripping high notes but these guys are still genius. The days when Rock was Rock. Today's music is garbage. If you listen closely to the lyrics you hear Kerry's Christian Foundation pushing through.

  • @Aralight13 Kerry was in a search at this time. He was really searching for the truth, but he hadn't yet come to Jesus. However, you are right that they lyrics he was writing at the time were taking him in the right direction. It seemed to be an almost intuitive thing. It wasn't until the Monolith tour that he came to know the Lord.

  • Saw these guys at Hoch Auditorium on the campus of the University of Kansas back in the mid-70's... for a $1.00. They were just about to explode on the music scene with Song for America if I'm not mistaken.

  • Just Amazing....

    Long Live to Kansas

  • This is too literate for me to listen to. I've got to get out of here.

I wish I still had this album..I played the hell out this studio track.

    .

  • This song is 100% pure awesomeness, no preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, or added sugar.

  • Quite frankly, the best drummer I have ever heard.

  • Unparalleled by anyone, anywhere,ever......as in NEVER EVER!!

  • @UncleJoey12 DT - Another fave band for me. But while DT is technically excellent, I don't fell the same level of "soul". They can rip, thrash, speed, but everything does feel "technical", less feeling. So while I will keep listing to DT, Kansas still does it for me.

  • Kansas is my altime favorite band. I was considered wierd in the late 80's in highschool cause I listened to them instead of crappy 80's music.

  • @HickAsABrick ... me too. They are my all time favorite band. How can someone listen to music like this and think other....

  • Kansas has apparently no showmanship, they aren't running around the stage randomly screaming or any other gimmicks like that, it's about the music, and that's the true spirit of rock.

  • @RandomNeilPeartfan Steve is very high energy to this day and David and Billy are pretty involved as well. Rich is very static, though. And Phil, well, he's behind the drum set.

  • @Arglactable

Yes, but they could need a healty kerry for second guitar und keys!

  • @Arglactable I'll admit that, I admire bands that don't mellow with age. And I wouldn't want to judge Phil for lack of motion.

  • Livgren's hair is timeless......

  • @leonakita Livgren's hair is GONE

  • @leonakita i meant, ''the look', the 'style'... not literally

  • love kansas what else is their to say

  • I have loved Kansas since the 70's. I saw them live in 1977. At the end they were playing and suddenly all left the stage - the music continued. Incredible. They timed it perfectly. I had a good buzz on and that helped.

  • Its no wonder they struggled to capture an identity... they are dressed more randomly than the VILLAGE PEOPLE here...you got a couple of standard hippies, one jesus freak, one unkept frizzy uncut-hair homeless type, one glamrock drummer and a hillbilly/cowboy in overalls...WTF were they doing??? the hillbilly guitairst is the most messed up..he appears in other videos wearing a HIGH SCHOOL prom tuxedo and another doning a Halloween jack eyepatch!

  • @leonakita regardless of my innane comments and judgements of the time, this song is a masterpiece in its own right!

  • @leonakita ABSOLUTELY AGREE, A GREAT SONG< ALBUM

  • @leonakita your a ass

  • @rockmusic2112 ...i'm the ass?...I'm not dressed like that EINSTEIN!

  • @rockmusic2112 its 'you're'..not 'your', dumbass

  • @leonakita You're totally missing the point, buddy. These guys were not about stage glam. They were about the music. I never saw them live, yet to me, they were one of the greatest American prog rock bands, right up there with the Brits. Their trip wasn't "look at me". It was "listen". If you really listened, you didn't care what they looked like. In the 80's they beefed up their act more to your liking, but their music was never the same again, especially after Kerry left.

  • @piscesman54 the music is unbelieveably awesome!...can't argue with you there... and they're look grows on you, almost like a fashion statement, or lack thereof, for everyone and anyone.

  • Im floating on the clouds of amber<3 One of the best bands of all time!! Ty for the post

  • from sublime sweet melodies to rockin the house....few bands can touch these guys

  • Would kill to of been born 30 odd years earlier, so i could see these guys live!

  • @MrChill619 i feel badlv for young people who like classic music because their isnt a lot of it around now a days Most these bands from 70s are doing greatest hits tours now a days they arent releasing any new music. BUT one thing that is good is that were able to see them live in smaller venues then we did back in the 70s and 80s. Sometimes all we have are our blurred memories of them playing live

  • sorry man i feel bad for young people that like classic music

  • i only want, that kerry is still okay and could write some new songs for that great band.

  • Anyone know the names of the two guitar players? Which one is the guy in overalls? I LOVE his style of playing.

  • @muzaklover78 Guy in overalls is Rich Williams, other guy is Kerry Livgren.

  • all you prog heads like me, love kansas, rush, genesis, yes....also check out spock's beard, flower kings, outstanding stuff esp spocks beard, the lead singer of spocks beard has since gone solo, neil morse, totally religious lyrics, great music...

  • i would give my left nut to sing half as well as steve walsh...

  • YIKES! Saw them in '74 at Winterland SF - they opened for BOC and Jefferson Starship ($5). Awesome, bought their album, Song for America,

  • old music is better

  • I've known Kansas like most, for Dust and Carry On, two great songs indeed. I discovered this song a couple months ago (shame on me, I know). Since then, I can't get enough of it. It has ALL the elements I love about a great prog track, catcy bass/guitar riffs, solid vocals with a purpose (not just high pitched crap), intricate musical harmonies (especially at 4:10 onward), catchy tune, and more! I especially love the juxtaposition of the violins with the guitars. Any other tracks like this?

  • @muzaklover78 Most importantly the song kicks ass!

  • @muzaklover78 The Pinnacle (Kansas) is probably the only song that beats this. I warn you though. The Pinnacle is so advanced that it takes listening 10 times to understand 10% of the genius there. The brain simply can't hold in and process fully that much genius in one time listening. Try the live version from this same concert.

  • @rosepetal108 OK, Pinnacle is DEFINITELY a very advanced song and has a TON of nice musical elements about it. I am still enjoying it and I listened to it over 50 times already. Thank you for that tip. I will say however that Icarus is much better flowing and organized a song than Pinnacle. I look at the Pinnacle as Kansas's own "Thick as a Brick" but just a tad lacking in melody, although the latter is the toughest track to beat IMHO.

  • @muzaklover78 I am glad I was able to help a fellow music lover.

  • @muzaklover78 Another tune from this concert you should also see is "Mysteries & Mayhem (live)". The quality is not as sharp as this vid but it'll do. Its a truly great, ROCKIN' tune! Kansas will always be known as one of the most "progressive" bands ever. Their musicianship and creativity were way beyond the norm for any era of music, then or since.

  • @sgtscruffy56 Mysteries INDEED a ROCKIN tune, thanks! Keep em coming!

  • Best album cover of all time

  • this is progressive or art rock?

  • musicianship at it´s best! <3

  • SO HIGH 1:49 SPLIT SCREEN 3:31 SEARCHING 4:03

Great song, great band, great musicians, great they still play shows *

  • more than amazing.i was young but i wasn't dumb i went and stayed sobre i must have been the only one. i went the next day to buy rush first lp in those day's it was vinyl or cassett and i only bought virgin vinyl nice to hear from you thanx les from texas

  • Music, words, & imagery! Steve Walsh had the best voice in rock at one time.

  • music has not caught up with these guy's and im not sure it ever will this coming from a 53 year old rocker first time to see them they were open band for rush fell in love still am. never get old

  • @lwill53951 If there is another band comparable to Kansas in ingenuity, skill, and passion, it would be Rush. Must have been an amazing show

  • @r3dcell Styx is pretty good too.

  • My favorite rock singer of all time maybe. wow

  • @tricia41D

    not maybe. I am sure!

  • fantastique

  • My big love from 1968 was progressive music, but mostly I knew of the British bands.Because of YouTube I've found German bands (Triumvirate) or the American band Kansas,so great & talented .

  • I first watched these guy's at the age of 9. At that time they were called white clover. I grew up in a town called Hays, kansas. They use to come over and jam with other local musicians I knew. Up on their first album I was hooked. Became a musician and never looked back. Sure miss those days. Kansas......Rock on!

  • Why isn't Kerry shown at 3:45? That's his solo, but the camera isn't even on him.

  • RIP Don Kirshner (04/17/1937 - 01/17/2011) What God has among the major rock stars that are already in paradise. Rock Concert was a great showcase for many rock bands like Kansas, Urian Heep, Black Sabbath, Rufus etc. ....

  • He signed them immediately. Today It's hard to imaging the musical landscape without them.

  • Back in the early 80's, one of my many unsuccessful musical projects had the opportunity to showcase for Don Kirschner in Manhattan. He had no in interest in us(probably due to a lack of marketability on our part), but told the story of flying out to the state of Kansas to meet the band. He said when he finally caught up with them, they were rehearsing in a barn out in the middle of nowhere. Frustrated, angry and on the verge of breaking up due to a lack of recognition, momentum, etc.

  • I'm in the UK, and Have enjoyed Kansas for a good number of years now - they never made it big here, but there are still a few who can appreciate great melodies, and Stunning vocals over here.....KANSAS - you're something else!

    ;))

  • This is one of the best bands we humans have ever made.Yeah exceeding bands like DT. Does anyone know if there is purchasable version / copy of these shows, seems like "The Pinnacle" was shot on same event too, and if there is, where one can buy it?

  • @divyx don't know if anybody replied or not. but this is off of Sail On: The 30th Anniversary Collection great stuff for any kansas fan. new or old

    2 cd's - 27 songs and this dvd as well, 17 songs.

  • anyone know of a band called Bosch? from Atlanta in the 80´s...

    amazing...

Ashley, Eddie, and Mitch...thank you for your music...

  • anyone know of a band called Bosch? from Atlanta in the 80´s...

    amazing...

  • Thank you Don Kirschner, you were one of the reasons the 70's music was heard! He was Kansas's manager also, I believe.

  • 99.6 % of USA-World

    neverknewhowgoodthisbandreallyreally was... Shame *

    =YOU= canbringgoodchangestoyouthandusa-etc 2011 *

  • up today my favorite band,

i wish they could make a new album

  • What power and clarity from the untarnished, golden pipes of Walsh. Beautiful!!!

  • Thanks for posting man. This takes me back to high school. Kansas is one of my all time favorite bands. Loved them and glad I was there when they broke it big!

  • IN THE IMMORTAL WORDS OF BOB SEGER - GIVE ME THAT OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL CAUSE TODAYS MUSIC AINT GOT NO SOUL . I DEDICATE THIS TO ALL THE LEDGENDS AND TRUE ROCKERS LIKE ME AND YOU.I AGREE WITH KEITH RICHARDS YOURE NEVER TO OLD TO ROCK -N ROLL.KEEP ON KEEPIN ON AND PEACE OUT

  • KANSAS WAS WAY BEYOUND THEIR TIME AND RADICALLY THE COOLEST

  • can't thank u enuff.........dream still alive.....2day pales in comparison.....imho. This IS music..........listen to their albums,,,,,it keeps coming....and never will end!!!!!!!!! Thx!!

  • these guys make me smile, every time

  • I spent the best part of my teen years listening to these guys and my son grew up with it being played in our home. Unparalleled in their music and excellence!!!

  • For those of us who grew up in this country during the era in which these bands ruled, we know that there is absolutely none that compares..."Floating on a cloud of amber...Searching for the rainbow's end...Earth so far below me, I'm here alone..." yes, I feel alone these days in this country that is called the United States that I know no more and do not recognize as my own.

  • @NatureGirl62 I'm with you sister!!!Same sentiments.

  • Saw them twice 30 years ago.....no band has this level of talent period...

    today's music sucks....period.

  • @wjf1950 saw them 4 x. This is, by far, my fav song. I named my daughter Amber cause it stuck in my mind. Kansus was a different kind of R-R. Still love them..... "Floating on the Clouds of Amber"

  • @wjf1950 I just want to say, I'm from "today's" music and I like alot of the stuff that's out, but Kansas is STILL one of my favourite bands. Just saying.

Down with Bieber and Cyrus!!!! Bring back Kansas!!!!

  • @wjf1950 Dream Theater!?

  • @InMnS it sucks :)

  • @wjf1950 lol @ 'no band'... i can name several..but your point is well taken...NO SLACKERS HERE!

  • @wjf1950 You're a jaundiced old musician/man

  • Kansas's original (classic) bandmembers: Kerry Livgren(lead guitar/keyboards/background vocals); Steve Walsh(lead vocals/keyboards); Robbie Steinhardt(violin/viola/lead vocals); Rich Williams(guitar/background vocals); Dave Hope(bass guitar/background vocals); Phil Ehart(drums/background vocals)

  • what´s the name of this song?

  • what´s the name fo this song?

  • No possible comparison between DT and Kansas, of course. 25 years or so make the difference. My personal choice goes to Kansas, anyway

  • how on earth does gorilla man keep the violin on his shoulder with all that hair wadded up under it? not to mention he can't ever look at the violin itself

  • @Dwigglemoo "Gorilla" man's name is Robbie Steinhardt- and he also played the Viola(bass violin) in concert and studio recordings. Kansas would have been incomplete without him.

  • why arn't they in the rock hall of fame??

  • I just discovered this song this year. It's amazing that I'm always looking for new good music and realize that the best stuff I find was made before I was born.

  • Well, It's really hard when one starts comparing bands or saying things like, " there is none better than...". For real lovers of music the distinctions are not so easy to make especially when considering the variety of musical styles.----It's akin to putting a band in a box as you've done with Kansas. Granted, they are an exceptional talent! I had the pleasure of seeing them in 1977 at the Hollywood Sportatorium.

I think a group like YES might be mentioned in the same breath!

  • @StevenHenryHolt True. Music is not supposed to be like sports. It's not a contest. It's like fruit. Can you really say that an apple is better than a pear? No. They're different, they taste different, they have different nutritional components. You'd probably be wise to have a little of each. The important thing for me is that a band is authentic, and Kansas, like many other bands at the time, certainly were. What sucks is canned music, the kind that's marketed first and recorded later.

  • @piscesman54 - I don't think anyone could have said it better piscesman54-----You've struck the perfect analogy! Daar ben ik met je het eens ; )

  • FYI: The opening album art is actually from their other 1975 album "Song For America". I always thought "Masque" was the better of the two "same-year" releases, as well as one of Kansas's best artistic albums!

  • This is my favorite Kansas song, and I've heard pretty much all of them.

  • Totally freakin awesome! I never ever grow old of these guys. This has got to be my favorite song, still at 54 years old!

  • I dare anyone to listen to this and tell me how many times this song changes key signatures...:)

  • stop talking and LISTEN....

  • the bassists mustache for president!!!

  • What year was this? I love it and want more songs from this show...

  • Livgren was a musical genius. Compositions such as this made these guys incredible. The Masque album was for me as good as it gets. Even though their breakout didn`t come until the following album, this album was I believe their best.

  • Love Farmer Rich Williams play guitar. Lol!

    Great song.

  • Wonder if the violinist ever catches his hair in his bow?

  • In response to robertsutter: you are a complete idiot.
