  • That is Michael Hampton.

  • This man...no excuse me warlock in all of his superlative power, has captivated you...please do not try to resist...for resistance is futile.

  • Everybody I put on to this fell in love......

  • Oh Yes and I play the same model guitar. Alembic Series One.

  • Discovered this tune when I was 12 (1972). Been groovin' to Parliament/Funkadelic ever since! FREE your mind, your ass WILL follow!

  • Daily dosage.............it gets better every time I hear it

  • The last dozen comments don't ruin the fact that this is the greatest solo captured of film. Grow up youtube Assholes. Get some pussy then you can admire this level of musical genius.

  • Is this the highest quality version around? Thanks for the upload.

  • Best guitar solo. EVER.

  • wow. Just f**king wow!!!

  • I was really pumped for the drop, but it never came. What a letdown.

  • @HitfulVids the entire song IS the drop

  • Dubstep isn't music, it's a product of fucktards and the little kid audience they prey on.

  • The funny thing is is that back in the day kids loved this music while their parents thought it was screechy and devilish and the parents' music was old timey, nowadays parents who listen to this are scorned by their kids who listen to dubstep and electro and their parents think thats screechy noise as well.

I'm here to say to each their own, fuck off.

  • lmfao. boring, pumped up?

jesus fucking christ. you people are listening to music wrong. get the fuck off this page and go back to your fucking justin bieber/lady gaga/skirllex shit. you're not wanted here

  • It's not to my taste.

  • its okay but it just doesnt get me pumped up like dubstep id listen to this before going to bed or something lol

  • People of youtube. Nobody really gives a shit about what you say in the comments because too much of it is filled up with idealogical bullshit and trolls. Just saying.

  • @mitchelldkirby: This, as you place your comment

  • @mitchelldkirby "Ideological"

    And spelling Nazis.

  • boring.

  • not that great wipe the tears emo faggots

  • God damn

  • This is the sound of aliens making out with robots.

  • Meh

  • 7 Bieber fans have been spotted.

  • Pretty shit this.

  • Hendrix, Page and Clapton ARE better guitarists than this guy. But it's quite nice.

  • holy shit

  • Wait, was this Eddie or Michael?

  • I think this is Eddie Hazel...

  • I Believe in this song this way this understanding of music I will not hesistate I will not forget It It is a part of me I cant let it go even with my last breath I can hear this and I am at Peace

  • I wept like a baby the first time I heard this song.

  • Im not so sure that was Michael Hampton.

  • I just wish youtube had a love button cause like is a total understatement, this is soul tingling

  • @Jeff8051 most call it the "add to favorites" option

  • there's not a lot of money in guitar playing nowadays those days are long gone

  • THIS IS MY ATHEM WHEN I NEED A PICK ME UP IT REMINDS ME OF MY MOM FAYE BALDWIN (7-14-41-04-20-2000) i will always love my momma

  • Speechless..............that was the greatest guitar playing I've EVER heard. Angelic and hypnotic. Sent a 10 minute chill up my spine

  • Ineffable beauty, color, life, heartache, soul, and of course women. Defend Jimmy and Randy all you must. This is my selection as the best guitarist, ever!

  • Maybe a lot of indifference early on was because of the Hendrix influence on his play if he lacked popularity. It was kind of a "how dare you" if you covered any Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, or come out with a similar sound trying to fill the void in everyone's hearts. If the radio didn't play you, you couldn't sell LPs. And Inna-Godda-Davida was about the only really long song even on FM so extended guitar solo's were saved for concerts and "Live LPs".

I love the sound so thanks for these!

  • this song brings down every emotion in my body and i see life through this song, particularily this performance, everything is perfect, the tone is absolute orgasmic, I LIKE THIS.

  • This is not a song, this is an experience. An exhilarating, superfluous, epic, experience.

  • @antkram Eddie was still locked up for biting a stewardess on the butt during this tour.... it is definitely Hampton

  • I don't care what any of the kids are saying.... Hampton was feeling it that night...99.9% of these brats didn't know who Eddie Hazel was on December 23 1992... That is if they were even alive lol

  • no one plays it like Eddie in my humble opinion

  • This has got to be one of if not the best guitar solo of all time. I seen them

live in 1977 in there prime, seeing Mike & Eddie that night really blew me away.

I've telling people about them every since. I can now show them what I was talking about.

  • The part of my brain that deals with music just came...

  • Why people could not feel the same way I do about this... I´m feeling sad for them cause I have felt things they could not imagine with this piece of artwork *tears to my soul*

  • come on men so BEAUTIFUL

  • the sustain at 9:00ish is just... sick. Volume, not some distortion pedal, is how you sound this good.

  • it's just perfect!

  • tremendo tema... dios como me llego el punteo

  • This is my s@#t. First heard in '78. Blew my mind. Just gets better. When i found live versions on YouTube? Wow!

  • OK THIS IS NOT ONLY 'FUNK' THIS SHIT IS AS ROCK AS YOU COULD EVER FIND IT..-NEVER FORGET THAT-ITS SOULFUL ITS FUNKY ITS BLUESY,ITS R & B,ITS PSYCHADELIC...BUT ITS ROCK BABY ITS ROCK. AND ITS STRONG AND HARD CORE,TOO. :o) MANY TOP ROCK MUSICIANS ANS GOT ALOT OF THERE INSPIRATION FROM THESE BROTHERS...PERIOD...

  • @TheTayedrums And you got a lot of inspiration from caps-lock.

  • @Fidoburger I GET ALOT OF INSPIRATIONS-WHEN I SHOUT I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN..NOT BECAUSE OF WHAT OR WHO YOU ARE!..thank you for inspiring ME TO SAY THIS TO YOU!.... BE INSPIRED WHILE READING THIS...

  • @TheTayedrums OK THIS IS NOT ONLY 'CAPS LOCK' THIS SHIT IS AS ANNOYING AS YOU COULD EVER FIND IT.

  • @PacM4nNL YES I SHOUTED- SO WHAT !! I DID IT!! GET OVER IT! BE ANNOYED ...thats YOUR PROBLEM

  • @PacM4nNL I feel sad for you. You lack your soul. Your emotional compass is way off. I don't care what your style of music or preferred sound is. Maggot Brain is an Emotional Journey of it's own Design.

  • i disliked this song by pure fucking accident so sorry

  • @stonedtemplepilot5 Who gives a fucking shit. People act like the like/unlike buttons makes a goddamn difference. This song is going to fall of the earth because a button on youtube was pushed.

  • free your mind and your ass will follow!

  • Master Jedi playing guitar...Lol...Amazing performance!!!

  • the arpeggio in the beginning remind me a lot of mike oldfield's tubular bells

  • Comment removed

  • Funk is Funk and these are the Gods of Funk. Been a Funkateer since 1969

  • It goes Hendrix-hazel and all others after that....nuff said

  • @ayosloan Please don't attempt to type or speak ever again.

  • thats Eddie Hazel...not M. Hampton....

  • how can anybody dislike this ?

  • If this guitar solo doesn’t bring tears to your eyes or touch your soul, you are merely listening and not feeling this work of art orgasm throughout every fiber of your being. Music like this is not heard, but felt.

  • @MusicManKnows true that

  • @MusicManKnows i'm eue;ess and ah ano sull.

  • @MusicManKnows comments like that are made to make me vomit last trace of humanity ive have

  • @makondoo Yeah :/ most people don't understand that people might not like what you like.

  • @MusicManKnows Truer words about this piece and the emotions it brings out by it's very nature have not been yet conveyed, not even by yous truly. PEACE!

  • I'm smack by god when i listen to this because its real raw funk!!

  • Whoa. Fuck Lady Ga Ga and P-Diddy.

This is MUSIC. Thanks to whoever posted this video ;-)

  • My favorite song of all time...

  • Its song makes you want to take a drink out of a empty cup of patron free you mind and your ass will follow

  • Does the solo ever END?!

  • Beautiful...

  • i can see hendrix clearly on that solo

  • i dont understand why people say hip hop and rap music is the evolution of funk when funk is just so much more intelligent and fun to listen to...especially on psychadelic drugs.

  • u jebote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm proud to be from Houston.

  • ive been playing this song since i was 14 and i can never make it through without crying my eyes out this song is guitar gospel if u dont feel this youre dead

  • Free your mind and your ass will follow. Maggot Brain is an state of mind and then, the condition and position of your ass. Free your mind and your ass will follow.

  • This video is absolutely NOT for people that play Guitar Hero...

  • Flawless, raw, beautiful... Electric guitar at its best. Everyone else plays their parts great as well. Just one of those timeless pieces. Wish I had been there.

  • That first note at 2:01is the most important part of the song, its like someone pleading for help or mercy and you are the only one who can help them, it draws you in and you can,t help but listen to them! So to all you cover guys you have to hit it right then the rest is a wrap!

  • @smashface31 Wow man that's depressing. But my mom died of cancer so I know how you feel. This is such a great song.

  • Also, I think this is the song I want played at my funeral

  • @torqueing my mom is sick (cancer) and this is the song i will play at her funeral i already know that but one slight remark, i will play the original. there can be only one Maggot Brain master , the rest are all (awesome) covers

  • @torqueing lol it would be my second choice, i already know what i want played, it's "lone sal bug" b y buckethead, go give it a listen :P

  • It's not just the playing either. He's expertly arranged this cover so it doesn't step on the shoes of a classic (take on a legend and there will only be one winner) .

He's slowed the first half and made it more melodic, spent longer building the crescendo, and gave a nice guitar-only virtuoso at the end as the cherry on the top.

Heard and learnt his name today. 60s and 70s Blues, Blues Rock and the transition into HardRock is my speciality and he is one of the most gifted guitarists I've seen

  • @torqueing @torqueing torqueing thanks for the post! I was lucky enough to attend alot of Parliment/Funkadelic concerts. Glad you have found the funk! LOL! I have the pleasure of talking to George Clinton and some of the members of the band. This song has gotten me through the good, the bad and the ugly! Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow!

  • I am totally gobsmacked that I have only today learned of the existence of Michael Hampton and Eddie Hazel. The fact they didn't amass a vast fortune each, aren't revered as gods and aren't mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix, Clapton and Page is an absolute travesty!

  • @torqueing I have been a fan since the early 70's and I totally agree with you. Also let us not forget Blackbyrd Mcknight who is posted on here also. He was overshadowed by Mike and Eddie but very accomplished also.

Check him out with the Brides of Funkenstein 1979. He is unreal.

  • @torqueing It's because they were playing Funk and not the more popular guitar medium, rock. Had they been in Led Zepp or Cream they'd be legends of their craft, but rock wasn't what moved them. It's okay though; Hampton, Hazel, Gary Shider, Bootsy, and the rest of Parliament/Funkadelic will be remembered forever as legends of Funk. They will get their due.

  • @torqueing Well stated! I agree w/ you 100%!

  • @torqueing You are very right!

  • shame on you. Eddie hazel was.... words cannot describe.

  • @torqueing this solo fucked me up. Jesus. Had someone not put me up on this on a fluke, I would have gone my whole life without knowing a man got on a stage and played that.

  • @torqueing Amen !

  • Heard at least 10 versions of this classic and IMO Michael Hampton rips a cover off this one like no one before or since.

  • Great performance!!

  • Nice late phase Hedrix quote at the end. Michael Hampton, aka Kidd Funkadellic is the Mozart of the Funkateers. Which would qualify Hendrix as Bach and Hazel as Hayden...

  • @alexdroogie100 GODS I am the typo king...HENDRIX...not Hedrix...

  • Köszönöm

  • Best guitar solo hands down, ever.

Because it's from a funk band it dosn't get the praise it deserves

  • @Eradicus Agreed, Eddie Hazel was light years ahead of his time with Maggot Brain and Red Hot Mama. Hazel was definately not a carbon copy of jimi Hendrix!

  • similtaneously fire sine i wave with youverberative tone sonar sound of off lawslide n slick lickity split rhythmic slide, foretold it creep into a future funk, i hide in the dance hall awaiting its pulsating rhythm to pound down the door, as i flee my funk oh what do i spy, a macsurfer mayhem arouse a rhythm captain named super FLY, ready to warrant me, my sorrowflows of cottonelle and tattered gunshelledwrap a funktightened spine...i'll definitely know when they took my furniture, my cat, oh m

  • what kind of guitar is he playing?

  • that's a stubborn guitar! it won't wilt to the player's orgasmic strokes, until the end...

  • Uhhhmazing!!!!!

  • Black Jedi made my brain melt.

  • I'm only 24 and I've heard this song my entire life and the story behind it is a very amazing story. It was recorded in two takes George Clinton told him to play the first part of the song like he found out his mother died. Then play the second half as if you found out shes still alive. You can hear the story and emotion through his guitar.

  • @atlast2000 That's crazy!! I love it!!

  • THIS IS the 45 size 33 rpm record version issued with the original release of,"One Nation Under A Groove album". That was in '78, do you remember. Hello, anyone

    out there?

  • I stole the record from my stepsister in 1974& still have it!

  • @featnavel Thief !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Who is the fucking lady gaga that don't like this piece of art??????????

  • File this under 'Music to take with you on your out of body experience' - lol! Yeah, baby!

  • es mejor qe obi wan y yoda juntos

  • this the best version i have heard yet played live...

  • If I didn't know any better I'd think all black jedis could play like that.

  • 7:02 - 7:43 no comment

  • How could I missed this for such long?

  • morther earth is pregnant for the third time!! yeap!

  • It's hard to believe this song never got it's due on radio !!!

  • looking forward to this at glastonbury!

  • Free your mind and your ass will follow.

  • i wrote a poem to this peice in remembrance of my cousin and i i said the poem and played this song it was a perfect match MAGGOT BRAIN FOR LIFE LONG LIVE FUNKADELLIC

  • madness

  • does anybody knows how he did that "volume effect" at 6:18 ??

sory for my english, i hope you people can understand..

    such a beautifull songgggggggggg

    its adictive.

  • maybe im misunderstanding your question, but he is using a wah pedal during that part

  • At first it sounds like a volume pedal effect, but since he's still using the wah effect as well, I'm thinking it may have just been the tape fading in and out.

  • @magicbus517

The volume effect was from the keyboard player.

  • @indigopuntaalta

Volume pedal from the keyboard player.

  • Free your mine your ass will follow

  • Shit Goddam Get of yo Ass and JAM

  • LOL is that a light saber at 5.30 ?

  • i see where frusciante gets so much of his style from, man this is the sorta stuff ive started playing, its amazing

  • @firstseason14 bullshit `frusciante is a fan of this song , but learned playing repeating every Jimmy Riff he heard

  • @firstseason14 funny i heard the same thing when i listened to the original with eddie hazel.

thought it was john frusciante when he was baby.

  • insane. so beautiful!

does anyone know if that sound at 4.51

is intentional? if so, what kind of effect is it, sounds like a loud scream.

  • @EvilWitDaKronic

    i think it is just a whistle:D

  • ...that was a whistle

  • miticooooo!!!! scopate all'infinito con questa musica e da sballo vero e proprio!!!!!

  • fuckng amazing!

it's so true what he said about the ass following a free mind

my ass has a mind of it's own when something is stiring my soul my ass stirs with it and I cannot even control that shit - not that I want to, just saying - he spoke gospel there! I understand Buckethead's Maggot Dream much better now too. no wonder I want to grind on that man, my ass is following my mind, my mind following his ass!!! hahahahaha damn life is beautiful when soul is poured into the mix

  • I saw Mike Hampton play this at MSG in NYC 1978 and 1979. No one has ever came close to this man - NO ONE

  • Comment removed

  • what about the guy who wrote the song?

  • Comment removed

  • George told him to play like his momma just died ..

  • Smmoooooooth.....

  • this must be the best version by an other person than eddie and i'm even including the santana version

    Kid funkadelick rocksss

  • hmmm possibly Eddie never played so cleanly either

  • This is Eddie Hazel not Michael Hampton

  • That is a 22 year old Mike Hampton-Eddie would NEVER play a song note for note, to much feeel!!

  • Daaaammmmm!!!!!! Kid Funkadelic., Hendrix is smileling from the cosmic heaven !

  • My Lord , this sounds sooo deep and genial.....

remeber a concert of clinton im 1991 in cologne where the play this about 15 minutes , nobody spoken in that time everybody was caught in this song, awesome

  • What the F_ _ _ !
