The funny thing is is that back in the day kids loved this music while their parents thought it was screechy and devilish and the parents' music was old timey, nowadays parents who listen to this are scorned by their kids who listen to dubstep and electro and their parents think thats screechy noise as well.

Ineffable beauty, color, life, heartache, soul, and of course women. Defend Jimmy and Randy all you must. This is my selection as the best guitarist, ever!
Maybe a lot of indifference early on was because of the Hendrix influence on his play if he lacked popularity. It was kind of a "how dare you" if you covered any Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, or come out with a similar sound trying to fill the void in everyone's hearts. If the radio didn't play you, you couldn't sell LPs. And Inna-Godda-Davida was about the only really long song even on FM so extended guitar solo's were saved for concerts and "Live LPs".
this song brings down every emotion in my body and i see life through this song, particularily this performance, everything is perfect, the tone is absolute orgasmic, I LIKE THIS.
I don't care what any of the kids are saying.... Hampton was feeling it that night...99.9% of these brats didn't know who Eddie Hazel was on December 23 1992... That is if they were even alive lol
Why people could not feel the same way I do about this... I´m feeling sad for them cause I have felt things they could not imagine with this piece of artwork *tears to my soul*

i dont understand why people say hip hop and rap music is the evolution of funk when funk is just so much more intelligent and fun to listen to...especially on psychadelic drugs.
ive been playing this song since i was 14 and i can never make it through without crying my eyes out this song is guitar gospel if u dont feel this youre dead

Flawless, raw, beautiful... Electric guitar at its best. Everyone else plays their parts great as well. Just one of those timeless pieces. Wish I had been there.
That first note at 2:01is the most important part of the song, its like someone pleading for help or mercy and you are the only one who can help them, it draws you in and you can,t help but listen to them! So to all you cover guys you have to hit it right then the rest is a wrap!
@torqueing my mom is sick (cancer) and this is the song i will play at her funeral i already know that but one slight remark, i will play the original. there can be only one Maggot Brain master , the rest are all (awesome) covers
It's not just the playing either. He's expertly arranged this cover so it doesn't step on the shoes of a classic (take on a legend and there will only be one winner) .
He's slowed the first half and made it more melodic, spent longer building the crescendo, and gave a nice guitar-only virtuoso at the end as the cherry on the top.
Heard and learnt his name today. 60s and 70s Blues, Blues Rock and the transition into HardRock is my speciality and he is one of the most gifted guitarists I've seen
@torqueing@torqueing torqueing thanks for the post! I was lucky enough to attend alot of Parliment/Funkadelic concerts. Glad you have found the funk! LOL! I have the pleasure of talking to George Clinton and some of the members of the band. This song has gotten me through the good, the bad and the ugly! Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow!
I am totally gobsmacked that I have only today learned of the existence of Michael Hampton and Eddie Hazel. The fact they didn't amass a vast fortune each, aren't revered as gods and aren't mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix, Clapton and Page is an absolute travesty!
@torqueing I have been a fan since the early 70's and I totally agree with you. Also let us not forget Blackbyrd Mcknight who is posted on here also. He was overshadowed by Mike and Eddie but very accomplished also.
Check him out with the Brides of Funkenstein 1979. He is unreal.
@torqueing It's because they were playing Funk and not the more popular guitar medium, rock. Had they been in Led Zepp or Cream they'd be legends of their craft, but rock wasn't what moved them. It's okay though; Hampton, Hazel, Gary Shider, Bootsy, and the rest of Parliament/Funkadelic will be remembered forever as legends of Funk. They will get their due.
@torqueing this solo fucked me up. Jesus. Had someone not put me up on this on a fluke, I would have gone my whole life without knowing a man got on a stage and played that.
Voilà un des plus beaux solo de gratte qu'il m'ai été donné d'entendre...à ranger sur la même étagère que Le "Cortez the killer " de Neil Young... ça c'est de la berceuse blufunk, mec!

@Eradicus Agreed, Eddie Hazel was light years ahead of his time with Maggot Brain and Red Hot Mama. Hazel was definately not a carbon copy of jimi Hendrix!

I'm only 24 and I've heard this song my entire life and the story behind it is a very amazing story. It was recorded in two takes George Clinton told him to play the first part of the song like he found out his mother died. Then play the second half as if you found out shes still alive. You can hear the story and emotion through his guitar.
THIS IS the 45 size 33 rpm record version issued with the original release of,"One Nation Under A Groove album". That was in '78, do you remember. Hello, anyone
i wrote a poem to this peice in remembrance of my cousin and i i said the poem and played this song it was a perfect match MAGGOT BRAIN FOR LIFE LONG LIVE FUNKADELLIC
At first it sounds like a volume pedal effect, but since he's still using the wah effect as well, I'm thinking it may have just been the tape fading in and out.
it's so true what he said about the ass following a free mind
my ass has a mind of it's own when something is stiring my soul my ass stirs with it and I cannot even control that shit - not that I want to, just saying - he spoke gospel there! I understand Buckethead's Maggot Dream much better now too. no wonder I want to grind on that man, my ass is following my mind, my mind following his ass!!! hahahahaha damn life is beautiful when soul is poured into the mix
remeber a concert of clinton im 1991 in cologne where the play this about 15 minutes , nobody spoken in that time everybody was caught in this song, awesome
That is Michael Hampton.

maybe im misunderstanding your question, but he is using a wah pedal during that part
benjammin420420 1 year ago
At first it sounds like a volume pedal effect, but since he's still using the wah effect as well, I'm thinking it may have just been the tape fading in and out.

@magicbus517
The volume effect was from the keyboard player.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
frusciante hates funk, that's why he quit the chili peppers.

@firstseason14 bullshit `frusciante is a fan of this song , but learned playing repeating every Jimmy Riff he heard
Reezer83 9 months ago
@firstseason14 funny i heard the same thing when i listened to the original with eddie hazel.
thought it was john frusciante when he was baby.

insane. so beautiful!
does anyone know if that sound at 4.51
is intentional? if so, what kind of effect is it, sounds like a loud scream.

fuckng amazing!
it's so true what he said about the ass following a free mind
my ass has a mind of it's own when something is stiring my soul my ass stirs with it and I cannot even control that shit - not that I want to, just saying - he spoke gospel there! I understand Buckethead's Maggot Dream much better now too. no wonder I want to grind on that man, my ass is following my mind, my mind following his ass!!! hahahahaha damn life is beautiful when soul is poured into the mix

I saw Mike Hampton play this at MSG in NYC 1978 and 1979. No one has ever came close to this man - NO ONE
