Developers would need to make their games compatible for other consoles. And once the 3 powerhouses (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) realized they were losing money, they'd end up making one console and then boom you only have 1 choice for a console and they just monopolized the game industry.

So honestly, it would spell the end of games.

Why is it no one can figure out how to hold a Coleco controller? It's not that hard to hold the main part of it with one hand and use the index and thumb for that side buttons and the other hand could hold the entire stick. I know many do it wrong as a joke, and sometimes I wonder if it's all, but I figured this out at 6 years old.

You know, If Sony or Microsoft where smart, they would let the other make an expansion to play the other system, after all, that would lead to more of there own games getting sold where they make money without the loss that is caused in making the hardware. Of course it's just that reason that they wouldn't. On a side note, Coleco also made a stand alone Atari 2600 called the Gemini (or something close to that).
