@TheEldoradoKid (#2) ~ Your point about "frying the hides all the way thru the quarter" is what drag racing TODAY misses out on. All these guys need to do is reduce fuel pump capacity & blower overdrive and we could bring back much of the excitement that drag racing in the 60's was all about. Now days it's all about how many dollars you can toss down the the corporate sponsored hole. The best parts of drag racing from the 60's are gone and no 1,000 foot run will ever replace them.
@MrRonnieG " Now days it's all about how many dollars you can toss down the the corporate sponsored hole. The best parts of drag racing from the 60's are gone and no 1,000 foot run will ever replace them."
How sad it's come to this, as all the creativity has gone out of it. It's become more about cubic dollars instead of cubic brains, as it's all become formulaic these days.
@TheEldoradoKid ~ You laid down a quarter-mile smoking comment yourself! My first trip to the drags was in March 1963; it was at Lions Drag Strip at 223rd & Alameda, just off the Long Beach Freeway. The "Greek" was making an appearance that day, it was a cold & windy early Spring day (probably felt like home to Karamesines) and his best was 8.20 @ 193 mph. The Zoomie headers hadn't even arrived yet and when they did ('64) it was for 2 reasons; downforce & to clear smoke from the slicks.
Check out the weed-killer headers! This predates zoomie headers which first appeared in 1964. The strip looks like Famosa (Bakersfield) where they held the annual Smokers Meet (which I attended in 1965 and 1967). This is a great blast from the past. It's bitchin', far out, groovy and just plain fun. Thanks for the post from a guy who lived at SoCal drag strips from 1964 until I was drafted (Army) in 1969.
@MrRonnieG I couldn't have said it better myself! Yeah, the old weed burners may have fallen out of use just for that purpose! Not sure if NHRA ever banned them. But I really dig these old classic rails, especially with the high gear only push starts, and then frying the hides all the way through the quarter! Now THAT was Drag Racing! I first saw the East Coast version of this outrageous scene at Englishtown Raceway Park back in '67 Yeah those were the days and I was hooked!
lol@ informercial.. "surf-fo-mercial".. tttthhhaats right!!.. you get "big daddy" don garlits, "tv" tommy ivo.. don "the snake" prudhomme.. the freight train and 98% nitro shoved rrright up yer #%%^*.. the surf gods have spoken.. you must light up... the tires that is..cowabungaaaaaa!!
Congratulations groovy Swedes! This stuff is way cool and next to amazing bands of today such as Los Kahunas, The Kilaueas, The Bambi Molesters, Bradipos IV among others. Greetings from the sunny Greece!
Need that album asap... Fantastic tune (if mono- recorded) + charming vehicles - The Surfites must be among the greatest trad-sounding bands of today, much like... like... How about: The Kilaueas?!
A 2007 release !! MAN !! This powerpacked sound is right up there with the very BEST of the old original pioneer surf / hot rod instrumentals of the early 60s Sothern California era !! I gotta get this album !!

If you're ever in Ocala, Florida, don't miss Big Daddy Don Garlit's Museum of Drag Racing.

Definitely pre-1964 as zoomie headers had taken over by that time. All these guys are running those loud-ass weed catcher headers.
