dont some clams have sand inside thier systems that has to be purged by letting them stay in some kind of starch solution? or does this process eliminate that?
@iroc464 They all have sand as far as I know, but I've never heard of having to purge them... We just cleaned out the sand ourselves with the spoons, even before we started using this method. Occasionally we'll miss a tiny bit, but it's not a huge deal if that happens.
I take my entire clam net full of my limit of razor clams and dunk it in a boiling or near boiling pot all at once. This way I minimize the chance of burning my fingers and don't use as much fuel to heat the water for so long. Then I throw them all into a cool bowl of water and pull them all out of their shells.
Well, I think he would have too.. He did mention it sometime before we started, but as we weren't exactly planning to even go clamming, we didn't bring everything along, haha.
in philippines we get this things near the river and we dont clean it like this you just wash them with cold water and boil them or grill

That's a very cool idea. Thank you for sharing. Now we know how to clean our razor clams.
LaoSoftware 7 months ago
He's not cooking them, he's blanching them to kill them before cleaning.
A few seconds in the hot water, then dunk them into cold water lest they get tough.
thewizardofahhs 9 months ago
all you need to do is get some clean sea water and let it stay in there for three days.. so the sand can spit out .. then cook it..
superwhiz88 10 months ago

@heelrunner Not a great idea..... It'll be like eating sand, for one.. And I don't think it's a good idea to eat their organs either.

How can you tell the difference from a geoduck neck and a razor clam neck when they stick out of their hole?
h3llom4te 1 year ago
@h3llom4te The most noticeable difference is the color of their necks.. Geoduck necks tend to be redder.

Wish I had seen this before shucking 100+ clams at Ninilchik over Memorial Day. With my hands. In the cold. We will be buying a camp stove for sure!
