This vid was shot at the Hammersmith Odeon and I managed to blag my way in. The thing I remember most was the cases of Carlsberg special brew which was stacked up on the side and the band were great mingling with the fans partying hard.
Beleive it or not the band put on a great show that night.
Without doubt UFO are one of my favorite bands and awesome live. Chapman was a great guitar player and the band were a very tight unit.
I have the IDENTICAL Washburn B-20 that Pete plays in this video, I love it and it is still my most used bass and I think one of the most beautiful I have.
Nigga, I done been out for a strong minute - in the county jail and shit, y'all know - and so I comes out of jail to find my house smashed up and shit and I be like "Let it rain, don't start these tears again."
I was at the Hammersmith Oden for the Making Contact tour , Paul was great ,but Neil Carter on keys and rhythm and lead was the glue that held it together. As good as Paul was nothing compares to vintage Schenker . No one will be as melodic as Micheal ever (Lipstick Traces, High Flyer).
@HLFFL I love this album, and I love Chapman's playing...but he's not as melodic as Schenk. In fact, Chapman era may be some of my FAVORITE era of UFO...but he's most def. NOT as melodic as Schenker.
@nowherepink i would say until 94 guns was the last kick ass rock band then everything got fucked up and everytime u mention rock or they think of metal, or jonas brothers.... damn i wish i lived on those decades
I'm a dyed in the wool Schenker fan, but I love Paul's playing, I love this lineup. The thing that really hits me though is that no matter who they have playing for them, no matter the era, UFO has great, great songs. I could also listen to Phil sing the telephone book, all day...
I've always loved UFO, they'll forever be my favorite. Their music got me through some real low points in my life! This video is an awesome find here on youtube-
Saw them on this tour in '82, with Aldo Nova and Stranger as opening acts. They were great. Pete Way and Neil Carter were especially into it. Great song, btw.
Never seen Tonka playing that Washburn guitar. I've had one since 1981 - it's a very cool and versatile guitar. Great to see a clip of this song, thanks.
Now for once in my life I can truly appreciate my Brothers love of music, I am a mother of a teenager and her music taste is different, and when she said she liked metal I thought it was like my brothers, but hell no, I love this, what a blessing to actually appreciate really good music.
According to Rolling Stone Mag., UFO are playing a festival in Pryor, Okla. this summer. It's called Rocklahoma. A weekend thing with a bunch of 80s bands. FYI
UFO is one of my all-time favorite bands. Why these guys never made it big in the USA, I will never know. They had some great music - both with and without Micheal Schenker in the lineup. I really enjoyed the Mechanix and Making Contact recordings. Paul Chapman isn't Schekner but is still an outstanding musician in his own. I wish the heck they'd tour the USA - I'd LOVE to see them. Phil Mogg and Pete Way are the heart and soul of UFO, no matter who the guitarists are. Keep rocking, guys!!

Melidian1: They ARE touring the USA right now! I sent you an e-mail with the remaining tour dates. They've already played in the East, Midwest, and Dallas - and are headed for the West. GO! It's the 30-year anniversary of the recording of "Strangers in the Night" - so emotional!
@Melidian1 i think they never made it big in the us cos of that fucking monroe doctrin america's for yankees, doesnt matter if there are some british with good sounds!
@Melidian1 Maybe they didn't make it big because of Schenker, as Scorpions made it big without him. Schenker is an outstanding musician, but let's be honest, he was quite a problem for bands back in the 70's and 80's
I was at the filming for this video and the audience consisted of about 30 people. It was filmed at the Hammersmith Odeon, London. The thing I remember most was the cases of Carlsberg special brew that the band bought out for us punters to drink. Great guys and Phil and Paul casually chatted with us and downed the special brew like water and then in the evening they played a great gig.
One of the top 5 British Rock bands in my opinion.
I think Id appreciate Chapman more if he wouldve put more effort in his soloing. He is quite a guitarist. He just lacks consistancy. It's like he'd put 100% in just a tune or 2 per lp then kickback on the4 rest. A prme example is the intro to "Mystery Train". That's some really kicking lead work on the acoustic. The rest of that LP is just so so. Really disappointing.
This clip was used in Vh1's HardRock 100 greatest artists, UFO sadly way up in the list, and they kept gushing over Schenker while playing the Chapman era clip in between short ones with Schenker! Still it was cool, regardless
i was watching this band play and i was talking to the guitarist and he actually bought this washburn that paul had pawned off and how much of a coincidence that this random guy had bought pauls guitar?? didnt believe him so i called up my dad(PAUL) and he told me the whole story now i know what guitar he was talking about!
LoneStar guitar's Paul? I bought the Headstone UFO LP, marking the bands 1983 breakup with this lineup and tracing the members roots. Chapman and Lonestar's song off that LP is their best in my opin
Those guitars are Washburns. The guitar is an A20 and the bass is a B20. I played a Washburn B20 when I was in Metallica. I also have a Washburn A20 that my friend Jimmy K gave me. See Ya! Ron McGovney

Yeah Davy. I feel the same way. I saw the Mechanix tour at the Long Beach Arena(LA) that was the second song of the set after"We Belong To The Night". Man those were the days..Great Post. Thanks..

Do yourself a favor - listen to the Mechanix album from start to finish - it may actually be the stongest they ever did.
even the cochran cover is well done. Chapman is much more melodic than MS was. And Phil's voice is at it's peak.
