I was going to go put this on somebody's wall on Facebook when I found it, but I made the mistake of keeping the song playing when I did. All I know now is that I've somehow got tears in my eyes, the person didn't get the video and, in my blackout, I felt my mind bend back on itself. Wat.
Buckley' version was ordinary, this is the best version bar none. For this version I learned to play ukulele. It changed my life. Buckley's version I did not manage to listen whole in one go.
Beirut are my favourite group. They're my favourite group, totally.
I don't mind Green Day or Foo Fighters. All I need is a ukulele, some trumpets, a violin and some bongos. Beirut are my idea of music. They're the silence of a while, when everything is loud and noisy.
Lets all calm down. We all like Beirut and this is a great cover but cmon... best cover of hallelujah???! I think Jeff Buckley's version (which got raped on the OC and overplayed in general) is still one of the best all time great covers. Dont forget your gobsmacked faces when you first heard that... just saying. but enjoy either way.
Much more respectable version than the justin timberlake's one... which is terrible by the way. But not even close to be as good as leonard cohen, nobody will ever be...
Excuse me? I'm from Europe, and for instance I love Beirut, do you consider that shit? I agree the commercial radio stations mainly are shit, but for your information, that's not where everyone listens to. As if American commercial radio stations are any better. The same shit. Be careful with your judgements.
@Daphuhnuh agreed. most of people listen to music on the net (or on good radios, yes they exist) and don't like the most famous radio stations. Plus it's very stupid cause in Europ we were the first to appreciate bands like the Strokes whereas in the USA they were so underrated. What about London music town ? And amazing bands like Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, the Libertines, etc. who are really loved here ? Mmh and the huge festivals ? But I'm not saying it sucks outta Europ!
@thebronzebat the Shrek movie, I remember liking it when it came out however many years ago. my point is that if people like the music, it doesn't matter how they come to it.
@toodrunktodream Beautiful takes! Having lived in Switzerland my whole life and having been out of the country for one and half years now, this really made my day, and the music just tops it off! Thank you!
I love beirut but i found this a little unimpressive. Not to say Zach's voice isn't stellar (it always is), I just felt it lacked energy. But then again, to each their own :)
I have to say this isn't a very good version of Hallelujah. Compared to Jeff Buckley or Rufus' versions of this song, Beirut pales in comparison - though I love Beirut to death - this sort of catharsis just isn't his thing.
if someone hadn't told me about Beirut i wouldn't have had the pleasure of knowing that there are still people out there that dare to be unique even though unknown. but what's with name...aren't them from New Mexico?
Yeah... I was totally blown away when I discovered Beirut. More specifically, Zach Condon is from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He did quite a few tours in France I think because they accepted his music more than the crappy "music" (if you can even call it that) industry in America.
Sky Shaw, he's not acting like a hipster, just despairing at the dumbing down of art. i had a similar feeling the other day when i heard a bossa nova version of radio head's 'high and dry'
@SoYCDPictures Okay, are you just being silly on purpose? Leonard Cohen wrote this song. Then Jeff Buckley (I guess it was him) dropped a verse. Leonard Cohen's version was the best though. And Beirut's version is soooooooo different. It's weird. Beirut and Leonard Cohen are two of my favorite bands/artist ever.
@crazypineapples91 I'm neither being silly on purpose nor at all. Cohen wrote the song, and had his speak/singing version with a gospel choir version. Then John Cale did his arrangement. Every cover since then has owed more than a little to John Cale's arrangement.
Dude, not everyone is a leanord cohen fan. Considering how popular that movie was of course alot of people would only know it from that. What does it matter? Don't act like a hipster.
@alreadysomebodysbaby yeah hipsters are famous for defending mainstream mass media as a form of musical diffusion :P. Also, 8 month old comment, really? Was it really necessary to comment on that?
