  • Before this video I could only listen to either Leonard Cohen or KD Lang; any other version was repulsive to me.

But this... this is something special.

  • La mejor banda de este tiempo, Zach Condon es lo máximooo!!

  • Je ne parle pas de francais...mais 'merci beaucoup' je veux dire!!!

    J'aime beirut ;-*

  • Switzerland is fucking beautiful.

  • Go to google translation...

É impressionante a força do Beirut. Incrível é seu som universal. Suave. Forte. Não existem nações, existe paixões.

  • @FJPanzer verdade, verdade :)

  • I was thinking about Steve Jobs's death and this song came to mind...

    rest in peace <3

  • I was going to go put this on somebody's wall on Facebook when I found it, but I made the mistake of keeping the song playing when I did. All I know now is that I've somehow got tears in my eyes, the person didn't get the video and, in my blackout, I felt my mind bend back on itself. Wat.

  • Oh when he laughs with the crowd - I wonder what was that about :)

  • @Ektasii He forgot the next words for a moment <3

  • @Ektasii It seems as if he forgot the lyrics? But I wasn't there so I don't really know for sure...

  • Ficou marromeno. o Leonard Cohen é imbativel.

  • Buckley' version was ordinary, this is the best version bar none. For this version I learned to play ukulele. It changed my life. Buckley's version I did not manage to listen whole in one go.

  • I watch this video all the time.

  • ok.. mto desafinado =(

  • Nobodys can make better than Jeff Buckley.

Sorry for my English Language..... I don't know if my sentence is right.

  • @Anaiswintz Nobody can make this song better than Jeff Buckley. Tu proches. (not sure if my french is right there, but I meant to say you are close).

  • Watched it 400 times in 1 year. :)

  • oh sweeet jesus... HIS VOICE>>> HIS VOICE!!!!

  • This song makes me cry tears of joy.

  • beautiful. and amazing. just stunning. perfect. stupendous. talent. crazy good. the best. Need I go on?

  • ZACH CONDON MARRY MEE! I don't even care if you forget my name!

  • Beirut are my favourite group. They're my favourite group, totally.

I don't mind Green Day or Foo Fighters. All I need is a ukulele, some trumpets, a violin and some bongos. Beirut are my idea of music. They're the silence of a while, when everything is loud and noisy.

    I like them, at all.

  • @luluigi96 I totally agree! BTW: Beirut IS....LOL, Don't mind :)

  • @TheShimidu I'm sorry. In italian a group is singular, but verb goes to plural form anyhow!

    Must improve my English...

  • Best voice I've ever heard.

  • Best voice I've ever heard.

  • Lets all calm down. We all like Beirut and this is a great cover but cmon... best cover of hallelujah???! I think Jeff Buckley's version (which got raped on the OC and overplayed in general) is still one of the best all time great covers. Dont forget your gobsmacked faces when you first heard that... just saying. but enjoy either way.

  • @ashkon52 Jeff Buckley is poop when compared to Leonard Cohen

  • @CaradocMorDellOboe um, no.

  • @jtincubus yes :D

  • Although Zach Condon had some pauses, he still made the most beautiful cover by far.

  • Bulgaria love Beirut

  • Brazil loves Beirut ! *o*

  • chords?

  • best version of Halelujah..

  • ahhgg. what is the strumming pattern!! :( helpp

  • what a great cover by Beirut. If I wanted anyone to do a cover of this beautiful song I would pick a beautiful sounding band like Beirut to do it.

  • Leonard cohen cover always awesome

  • @DonFormica leonard cohen isnt a cover. it's his song. jusst sayin :)

  • what does hallujah mean?

  • @bonitayara "Praise the Lord", or, "Thankyou, God." (:

  • @bonitayara Glory to the Lord on the Heights =)

  • I love Beirut, but I prefer Jeff Buckley 10 times better than this attempt.

  • it's hallelujah AND it's from Zach Condon! ok, i wanna marry him

  • Zach Condon has the best voice I have ever heard. He is born to sing. So enjoyable and sensitive. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

  • This sucked. I love beirut though

  • i love beirut and i love this song (as sung by jeff buckley)

...Sorry but... THIS IS AWFUL! :-S

  • Much more respectable version than the justin timberlake's one... which is terrible by the way. But not even close to be as good as leonard cohen, nobody will ever be...

by the way i love beirut

  • Not the best attempt at covering this song, but nice try. The uke is always great.^^

  • actually, sorry to say, in Europe they listen to real shit!

i can't even turn on the radio because i want to smash it.

  • @eevlwich

Excuse me? I'm from Europe, and for instance I love Beirut, do you consider that shit? I agree the commercial radio stations mainly are shit, but for your information, that's not where everyone listens to. As if American commercial radio stations are any better. The same shit. Be careful with your judgements.

  • @Daphuhnuh agreed. most of people listen to music on the net (or on good radios, yes they exist) and don't like the most famous radio stations. Plus it's very stupid cause in Europ we were the first to appreciate bands like the Strokes whereas in the USA they were so underrated. What about London music town ? And amazing bands like Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, the Libertines, etc. who are really loved here ? Mmh and the huge festivals ? But I'm not saying it sucks outta Europ!

  • @thebronzebat the Shrek movie, I remember liking it when it came out however many years ago. my point is that if people like the music, it doesn't matter how they come to it.

  • RIP jeff buckley. im going to learn this on mandolin , i learned it like 20 min on piano.

  • Really great video :)

    Congrats!

  • :))))))))))))))))))

    alleluja!

  • isn't the video made in switzerland???? :D

  • @unidentifiedbeats Most of the train footage is from Switzerland, yes.... Good eye.

  • @toodrunktodream Beautiful takes! Having lived in Switzerland my whole life and having been out of the country for one and half years now, this really made my day, and the music just tops it off! Thank you!

  • @unidentifiedbeats

    Dang,nicely done!

  • isn't the video made in switzerland???? :D

  • Canta moi ben. case coma o jeff buckley

  • HIjos de puta! No puedo dejar de escucharlos, vengan a BUENOS AIRES!!!

  • @RodrigoAlfaro1986

    siii adhiero

    por favor vengan YA

  • I love beirut but i found this a little unimpressive. Not to say Zach's voice isn't stellar (it always is), I just felt it lacked energy. But then again, to each their own :)

  • I like Beirut, but Jeff Buckley's version to me is the best

  • Oh my, this was great, thank you :)

  • Zach is amazing and unique! Better version I've ever heard for this song....

  • Comment removed

  • aw, so brilliant!!! defo one of the best covers of that song! (and there have been alot!) :)

  • His voice sounds a bit like Rufus Wainwright.

  • really like the cover..it's fun!!

  • Fantastic!!!!!

    Come on D.F.!

  • This doesn't make sence, it does not transmit at all the feelling of the original music. Just pointless...

  • haha i dig the little off chord @ 1:38

  • lovely...so beautiful...can´t belive it! love love love!

  • This is so lovely, both the music and imagery - thank you for posting

  • This music make me smile! (:

  • i love this :)

  • I have to say this isn't a very good version of Hallelujah. Compared to Jeff Buckley or Rufus' versions of this song, Beirut pales in comparison - though I love Beirut to death - this sort of catharsis just isn't his thing.

  • So true, Jeff Buckley's version is unbeatable, tied up with the original from L. Cohen

  • I agree...he makes it sound too joyful; the mood doesn't fit.

  • Already watched it 20 times in 2 days!

  • thanks!

  • haha me too :D

  • @nietsdoener only?

  • Nice video :)

  • Excelente! Triste mas bonita ao msm tempo! - Sad but happy at the same time!

  • To a man whom ilove so much......

  • Essa uma das musicas que me fazem sorrir :)

  • Hallelujah, ainda existem musicos como estes!!!

  • Hallelujah, there are still musicians like these!!!

  • This is amazing, love the pause in the middle where he messes up and they all laugh but he just continues. Very classy and well-done.

  • @TygerShumate I agree he seems like such a natural and charismatic guy :)

  • <3<3<3<3

  • zach condon has an amazing voice.

  • Love Beirut.

  • the video looks like austria ;)

  • if someone hadn't told me about Beirut i wouldn't have had the pleasure of knowing that there are still people out there that dare to be unique even though unknown. but what's with name...aren't them from New Mexico?

  • Yeah... I was totally blown away when I discovered Beirut. More specifically, Zach Condon is from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He did quite a few tours in France I think because they accepted his music more than the crappy "music" (if you can even call it that) industry in America.

  • Sky Shaw, he's not acting like a hipster, just despairing at the dumbing down of art. i had a similar feeling the other day when i heard a bossa nova version of radio head's 'high and dry'

  • High and Dry was written as a money grab anyways. Thom Yorke has admitted this. Why would a bossa nova version upset you?

  • is this a jeff buckley cover?

  • This is Leonard Cohen song.

  • It's sort of a cover of the Jeff Buckley version of the Leonard Cohen song. Stylistically speaking.

  • Comment removed

  • @toodrunktodream A cover of a cover, so epic.

  • Actually, both this and Jeff Buckley's performance are covers of the John Cale version of the song.

  • @SoYCDPictures Okay, are you just being silly on purpose? Leonard Cohen wrote this song. Then Jeff Buckley (I guess it was him) dropped a verse. Leonard Cohen's version was the best though. And Beirut's version is soooooooo different. It's weird. Beirut and Leonard Cohen are two of my favorite bands/artist ever.

  • @crazypineapples91 I'm neither being silly on purpose nor at all. Cohen wrote the song, and had his speak/singing version with a gospel choir version. Then John Cale did his arrangement. Every cover since then has owed more than a little to John Cale's arrangement.

  • why is anyone asking if this is a jeff buckley cover?

of course its a jeff buckley cover... who else ever did this song?

like seriously anytime you hear "knockin' on heaven's door" give props to axel rose.

    fucking retards.

    sincerely,

    l. cohen

  • looks like switzerland to me...and his voice is hypnotic without being annoying.

  • brilliant cover! adds their own style to it too!

  • i love how the french guy says beruit at the end!

  • Nice

  • Haha! This is the song from Shrek!! :D

  • ARE you fucking kidding me. shrek? thats how you know this song. how insulting.

  • Dude, not everyone is a leanord cohen fan. Considering how popular that movie was of course alot of people would only know it from that. What does it matter? Don't act like a hipster.

  • @SkyShaw which movie was that?

  • @misskoltsovo shrek, which had a cover as one of the principal songs.

  • @misskoltsovo shrek, which had a cover as one of the principal songs.

  • pretty sure YOU are acting like the hipster. listen to yourself! ahaha!

  • @alreadysomebodysbaby yeah hipsters are famous for defending mainstream mass media as a form of musical diffusion :P. Also, 8 month old comment, really? Was it really necessary to comment on that?

  • some songs of pop are so good that they surpass their creators and become classical music, compositions that are played everywhere as known markers of genuis, outlets for peoples creative measures

  • I love zach♥

  • Super! (spoken like the french way)

  • avec moi...

  • so beautiful.

  • i don't like the jeff buckley version...seems too fake..the original, well leonard cohen has some voice...unfortunately though yes i've almost grown to hate the song thanks to the atrocity that is alexandra burke...this version's niceeeee though :)

  • Leonard Cohan has come out and actually asked people to stop recording versions of this song...think more so because people might end up hating the song as it would be overplayed. esp since it was ruined by Alexandra Burke on that bloody Pop Idol show....

  • I agree, really over covered song. I love leonard cohens version the most, this is a cool version.

  • i love this version, its so tender and honest. it seems right but i believe there are so many good versions of this song everyone can find one that is beautiful to their ears

  • both have there good merits. i dont see why one cant appreciate both

  • For the creation of the song lets thank Leonard Cohen; for the beauty of the voice lets thank Jeff Buckley ; for making it fun and joyful lets thank Beirut

  • wow before reading this comment I pretty much said the exact same thing to my friend here...

  • Just go back pull out Leonard Cohen and really listen this time

  • Do you want to take this outside?! You're gonna pay for that comment.

  • No one does it to me like Rufus, but I do like this version.

  • Amazing Cover.

  • fucking A

  • Erm, I don't know if anyone agrees but this was the best cover of this song in my opinion.

  • well its clearly not, but it does show how effective a simple composition can be

  • In my opinion it is, I could listen to this again again, whereas I couldnt the others

  • I prefer Lucky Jim's version

  • me too his song your lovely to me is good also

  • The guitar sounds like Elephant gun xD

  • I mean, in both cases it's ukulele and it's the same musician so it's not that surprising.

  • 50,000 exactly....cool

  • the origional has been overplayed so much that it's become ridiculous. I can hardly say im surprised Beirut went for their own version of this classic but i think that they've nailed it with their own style, its a classic vocal song with a Beirut twist to it. poetry.

  • Oh man, this is a spontaneous live thing. This is such a negative way of expressing it. I know it is been expected, and I am not surprised either but I would've been surprised and disappointed if he didn't ever chose it. Luv this version and his way to play with it and the audience. Esp. around 3.50 where the audience kinda becomes the choir.

  • sort-of, he seems to have made it a habit to play this song at gigs as you'll see from a few other videos...

  • Uwielbiam ten głos.

  • i loved your video, fitted the song perfectly

  • thanks. That means a lot to me!

  • By no means am I trying to prove (by posting this) that it the best version ever recorded. I like Beirut, and this is a nice interpretation of Jeff Buckley's brilliant interpretation of Leonard Cohen's brilliant song. ;)

  • do you know where i can get the mp3 for this?

  • sorry! Not a fun of this version! Does not say anything to me! But all for his artistic right to give his own interpretation. It sounds like his audience really loved it!

  • I prefer the original version, but this one is great too

  • Zach Condon est Jésus

dieu n'est pas aussi frais que lui

    salutations from chicago

  • i love that men, but more i love this song in previous version sorry zack

  • He's managed to take a brilliant song and turn it into a george formby style, after hearing this i burst into a chorus of i've been cleaning windows. N.B (I expect only engish people will get this reference, tough luck yanks).

  • It nothing like George Formby mate.

  • i'm not talking about his singing, it's the high tempo yukelele thing he's got going on.

  • Beautiful!

  • i dont know why it makes me sort of cry... the way he sings it makes it so intense.

  • thats his style if

  • eh...I like Beirut, but I don't think he pulls off this cover very well. He doesn't sustain his voice very well in some parts, but maybe that's just because he's not taking in enough air and tensing his throat when he sings. The Ukelele is kool though.

  • Leonard Cohen + Beirut? This pleases me, thank you!
