I had a conversation similar to this with my younger cousin while teching him to play Texas Hold 'Em Now he's started quoting this song everewhere 5/10 times he'll use the quotes at the right time
What to throw away: Lady GaGa and her 'poker face' song...which can't match a song like this. What to keep: Kenny Rogers. I'd say the Gambler would do this.
This song will forever remind me of an episode of Golden Girls. Sophia said, "It's like the Good Book says 'You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em'...". Dorothy says, "Ma, that wasn't God, that was Kenny Rogers."
i swear everytime i listen to this i always expect its to say 'know when to run, YOU GOTTA COUNT YOUR CHICKENS!' xD i know the lyric isnt that, but count your chickens just pops into my head xD
today at school my freind and i dossed a half an hour class in the school bathroom , i had this song on repeat and i had my fags as well , let me tell you it was the best half an hour class i ever had :) ...remember kids stay in school and dont be a fool :L:L
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's realized this, but this song has a surprisingly dark undertone. The advice comes from a man who presumably passes away in his sleep shortly after taking the last swig of another man's whiskey bottle. i don't know about you, but I'd be rather nervous sitting in a room of a train car with a man who just died for no discernible reason.
Who would imagine a kid in Africa listening to Kenny Rogers...lol heard this song when I was about 10...still listen to it, Im an hip hop head, yet i still love this song, i guess thats how you define good music...it knows no boundaries.
@unclepunkle The song never said that he was Bankrupt, Alcoholic, or an Addict. He said he made his life gambling because he was good at it. He asked for the last drink of Whisky since im guessing he could feel himself fading and well, most people would like a last drink. Being on a train to nowhere does not mean he was bankrupt either, Nowhere can mean alot of things and in my opinion he was probably trying to get away for his final moments
@unclepunkle by conventional standards yes. however, I believe there was some wisdom behind the gambler. he lived his life to the "extreme" he might have died with nothing but his life was much more full than most peoples. it might not have been full of material, but it was full in a different way. a way not appreciated by most people today (including myself, I am very materialistic).
@unclepunkle you do alot of assuming. First of all, it never says he's banktrupt OR an alcholic. just because you like whiskey and are a gambler doesnt make you these. second he could easily just be out of cigs. many people ask others for one. dont assume on everything, just enjoy the song.
@unclepunkle : actually, they've been through alot obviously. so depending on the person, they could be the best person to take advice from. for example, if someone were to tell you not to do drugs, wouldnt you rather them be experienced on the topic. like if they had never gone through any of it then how could they give good advice. the best advice given is advice backed up by experience.
@unclepunkle On the contrary, he's probably made all the mistakes you can in life, but it's too late for him... the best advice is the mistakes of others. ;)
@unclepunkle I wouldnt be so sure about that because if you sit down with them, they know how to survive in any circumstance...... oh and it doesn't say he is bankrupt, just because you drink doesn't make you an alcholic, and just because he gambles does mean he loses everytime AND he could afford a cigerette because all he asked for was a light. Maybe you should listen to the song before making comments like that! Enjoy the song.
"so if don't mind my saying, I can see you are out of aces." How many times in my life have I been "out of aces" and remembered this Kenny Roger's song about life being a gamble: "'cause every hand is a winner and every hand is a looser, and the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep." So is question of knowing when to fight, when to accept defeat, when to just walk away, easier said than done.
This is the best version of all the Gambler vids, the others are either low quality sound, too soft OR a CROWD FULL OF IDIOTS CLAPPING... people wnat to hear the song, not incessant clapping.
Think of the Dislike bar as Justin Beiber's Penis, it's Small and should not be there ;)
