Russians walked away cause the referees played for Flyers whole game, it wasn't just about the last hit. NHL teams were loosing game after game to the Soviet team, it was bad for NHL, bad for business, bad for media (propaganda). Only "right" referees could stop it. BTW, that "walk away" maneuver was a good move, next games were run by honest referees.
