  • I always felt like John Wayne himself could benefit from speech therapy due to his flat, flat voice. Berating those who have a neurological condition such as stuttering is simply as bad as berating someone with Cerebral Palsy. One can't help what one inherits.

  • @vcoonrod uhhh . . .

If you notice, this was a WESTERN, turn of the Century America in the Badlands. Can you imagine how MEANER it was in REAL LIFE? Put yourself in the "context of the Film", not TODAY :p

Also, the Director said of Wayne in the Documentary that he was real easy to work with gentleman (and he was SHOCKED that he was), he was a dedicated Family man as well, even with his (I believe) 3 divorces, he was always close to his children :).

  • The young boy playing Bob is Sean Michael Kelly. Sean and I met at St. Elisabeth's school in the San Fernando Valley when I was age 12. These days he's a baptist minister. What ashame nothing was done to reveal who these young boys were as young kid actors, their dreams and goals. Too much focus was made on John Wayne in the behind the scenes stories and not on the boys who starred in the movie and did a wonderful job carrying the story. - K. Montague

  • Waynes method might work short term but not cure. Cursing, singing etc can allow stutters to talk. Stutterer, country singer, Mel Tillis, said he was performing with a famous comedian somewhere. They shared a room. He woke up in the middle of the night and discovered an intruder was in their room robbing them. He said he was absolutely speechless at first but managed to sing loudly, "Oh Johnny wake up there is a robber in our room!" they both got up and the startled thief fled.

  • he teaches and walks away,, alone. just like me, badass scene. hell ya.

  • i realy hate the stupid people who coment and say a logical reason for a studer its a movie who says its saposed to be real?? and tgen there the extreamly retarted people who mess with the duke i would love to see your dumbass tell him your real feelings!! so how about you just fuck off

  • Well, he got the job done! I mean, curing that kid of stuttering. In that kind of a situation, you can't have that kind of a handicap impede you of telling someone when another man's life is in danger. As he said, he could have drowned.

  • That Pale Face Cracker was more of a Dick than a Duke.... He was a just a

Hollywood ~ hero (Not a Real Soldier, but a Toy One). Also, He was more of a

Brokeback Mountain type Cowboy. Any real Indian such as Myself, would have

kicked his Big C having ass ~ On Any Given Sunday.

  • @Thisorderlykonduct Brave words directed at a man years in his grave. Tell you what, you go find someone who is a complete stranger and film yourself yelling at them what you wrote here about Wayne, and if they don't cave your skull in...I'll give a whole quarter.

  • @Thisorderlykonduct bullshit. you should read up on the man instead of repeating crap told by people who were jealous of the Duke's popularity and didn't like his politics. He most likely would've kicked your ass on his worst day.

  • I cheered when John Wayne's character died. He deserved worse, and this is precisely why.

  • i said that to my dad one time when i was 16...he didnt walk away like that...he knocked the daylights outta me .....

  • Stuttering has nothing to do with "willpower" or "overcoming" fear.

It is a neurological deficit managed by methods of breathing, managing muscular stress, and training oneself to respond to dysfluent moments.

    Such ignorance.

So glad that the Duke can solve all problems so easily...what a cowardly way to live.

His generation receives Medicare and Social Security, yet continue to vote in politicians who are attempting to end these programs.

  • great move, to watch john with those boy,..warm , tough,funny,..john wayne at his best, just being himself,...

  • The Duke cures speech therapy through mockery and verbal humiliation! Happens to work you son of a bitch!

  • this is the funniest thing ive seen in a long time

  • King George VI should have gone to the Duke, not Lionel Logue ;]

  • nice!

  • In terms of sheer badassery, John Wayne is right up there with the Honey Badger!

  • Too much babying in today's world. Not that some folks don't have real problems - the difference is in the effort you make to overcome them.

  • This is an honest movie showing what happens when a man corrects a kid who nearly let his friend die. Then the kid got angry, said things he shouldn't have, then he realized he was able to conquer his problem.

The movie is showing exactly what happens in real life sometimes.

It's arrogant to pretend you're sinless.

  • @icartoon2. Brother, you need to grow up. Put away this childish crap and develop a skin if you are going to be online preaching Christ and him crucified.

1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things

I was one of those who defended you. Maybe a session of strong meds would help with your anger problems.

  • You can do alot of things when you think you can't.

    Can't never could do nothing.

You have to want to bad enough. My dad always told me that.

It takes a strong willpower to be an overcomer.

  • 2 people are sons of bitches

    what was that??

2 people are goddamn sons of bitches

    say that again

2 people are goddamn dirty sons of bitches

    say it faster

2 people are goddamn dirty mean sons of bitches

i wouldnt make that a habit

  • Loved the old fashion methods! Someone told my dad that I had ADHD and that I needed an evaluation and medication and treatments. My dad just listened. Then he brought me home and beat my a#@ until I couldn't walk. Never took one ADHD pill or evaluation or treatments. Those methods work!

  • cursing always stops the stutter

  • sure. that's how retards handle difficult situations....

  • I love the Duke, but it only works that way in the movies. Stuttering is a serious problem which requires years of therapy and even then most people are not completely cured, but only learn to deal with it and tricks to prevent it. Actually, screaming at a child would only make the stuttering worse in most cases. The child may have been able to not stutter while he was intensely angry, but that cure is only short lived. Just hope your child doesn't have that problem.

  • @crylo1800vtx are you implying a John Wayne western wasn't an entirely accurate representation of complex linguistic problems? I am shocked and appalled good sir.

  • good hell! the way these boys ride horses is amazing, like they was born on the back of a cuttin horse!

  • one of his best movies.

  • @Codeman1887

Only because John Wayne isn't around anymore to cure it.

  • The Duke: Parenting 101 (The Tail Dont Wag the Dog!)

  • Something I found out from one of the kid actors when I talked to him in person. They were afraid of Bruce Dern during the filming of this movie. The read actors were. Dern was that good of a villain and a actor.

  • Too bad stuttering can't be cured that easy in real life.

  • @Codeman1887

Only because John Wayne isn't around anymore to cure it.

  • Love the title! lol

  • lmfao

  • Fffffuuuccccc, ....kkkkkk offf Duuuuuu duuuu duuu...kkkkkkkkkkk

    Prick.

  • Too funny...also getting tough is a way to cure ADD

  • At a similar age to the boy actor I, too, had a stutter! I resented Wayne in this scene-it's as if he something of a speech therapist!-an expert! The scene is well crafted, but, alas, not true to real life. No-one gets 'cured' with such a barbaric ticking off. Stuttering is not self-inflicted.

Having said all this, I loved most of his movies.

  • your killing the fantasy of the movie

  • @notatnik150 Really? It's "not true to real life?" Are you kidding? I thought this was a documentary. ... Look simpleton, before there were "speech pathologists" and other so-called "experts," there was stuttering. They had to deal with it some way, this presents one way (getting the guy past his self-crafted layering of protection to his core). Maybe like scaring someone out of hiccups. I have no doubt that this could have worked even if it's not recommended now.

  • @proffromgview Methinks you are a complete idiot!! An uneducated one at that judging by your inane remarks. How long have you been an idiot? Since birth? Runs in the family?!

  • The kid and John Wayne wear so great in this scene. I started crying when the kid was crying but I was laughing at the same time.

  • foster dad at work :)

  • Does anybody remember a tv show, which was set in a school, that resolved a storyline in a similar way? It was about a teenager who stuttered, but finally stopped after he got so angry at his classmates taunting him.

  • John Wayne *owns*

  • Mooo !

  • I LOVE this movie!!

  • Wow! Now I know I don't even need to take a course in dysfluency! I'll just incorporate the techniques of John Wayne! Let's just give him his C's right away!

  • There are different reasons for people to studder. Some can be fixed by doing exactly what John Wayne did in that scene.

  • I guess takomaguy would have preferred he use some Brokeback Mountain therapy on him.

  • Great movie clip....hilarious description!!!

  • LOLZ

  • whats this movie called?

  • The Cowboys

  • The Cowboys

  • @jertel1234 The Cowboys. If this doesn't jerk a tear then you're not human.

  • The Duke could help at stuttering clinics.

  • Too many pussy cry babies in this world today. God bless the duke.

  • @timdelvecchio You do know this is a movie right?

  • @timdelvecchio ...we need more people like this, so damn much.

  • You god damm mean dirty sonofabitch...

  • @RichAtCamp "I wouldn't make it a habit of calling me that son"

  • Get over yourselves you 21st century suits and "clinicians". Those of us who grew up with 19th cnetury men quickly learned our jobs-we didn't whine, moan, or pity ourselves. We did learn self confidence ,independence, and learned to laugh at ourselves and circumstances. "toughening in " was a great preparation for life when you were told " why a little lady like you would waste our money".Then the suits were surprised when they were surpassed. Ranch life was great preparation.

  • Stuttering is a neurological condition.

  • It doesn't matter. Even neurological conditions fear the total badassery of the Duke.

  • oh oh that made my day

  • YES!!!!!!!! hahahahaha

  • @TheAtomicSkull Oh yeah! Great comment!!! The Duke IS the man!

  • Hell yes.

  • John Wayne's character could use a better understanding of neurophysiology. Cursing involves a different area of the brain than ordinary speech. Stroke victims will often lose the ability to talk except for cuss words, for example. It's quite common for stutterers to curse without stuttering.

  • Who gives a shit?

  • Grimm, I would not share a foxhole with you. I'll bet you're a veritable riot on a date, too.

  • @EdWatts If I had an fast-growing, advanced Wernike's area brain tumor, I wouldn't want you diagnosing and treating it.But I'd have no trouble calling you an asshole, though I wouldn't be able to tell you why.

  • What you write and the responses are emblematic of what we have come to in 21st Century America. You are absolutely correct from perspective of a clinician, but of course, very few want to listen to an educated discourse on the issue.

  • Different area of the brain? Oh, please! More PC BS. Your brin tells you what to say; you use language to say it. How are regular words different from curse words? If a person can curse, they can talk.

  • EXCELLENT TITLE!!!

  • Them were the 1st words my kids ever spoke to me and still do ! LOL

  • wow-- there's about 50 million kids in America that good use The Duke.....

  • agreed bryson 109----will someone please bring the duke----------and reagan, back to life-----god we need em now more than ever!!!!!!

  • So true, rocketman! You said it. And isn't it strange how Reagan-the last truly conservative president we had-won a second term, even capturing Massachsetts, but McCain couldn't even win Virginia. Just goes to show that Republicans are wasting time running as "centrist" candidates. That is just code for liberal.

  • Can someone please bring the Duke back to life.

  • I'm a bryson, have you any Irish relatives?

  • Bryson is my first name. None that I know of.

  • john wayne...american. duke at his fuckin best. if every american kid had a dad like the duke we would be a bunch of bad ass son of a bitches...god bless ya duke.

  • Agreed. My old man was a spittin' image of the duke. Except for the fact that my dad could bench 550lbs. and let me know the hard way when I fouled up. His beliefs and morals were passed on to me just as I am doing to my own. The world is going to hell and fast, At least if I raise my kin right, I will know there is still some hope for the future of this country.

  • i'm a speech therapist..thanks to this video I got the key I had been looking for since a long time in stuttering treatment..thank you john of a bitch :)

  • God Bless John Wayne

  • Thirty years ago this summer that he left us. I was in summer school at college. I miss the hell out of him.

  • was some of "The Cowboys" filmed in Monument Valley?

  • JOHN WAYNE WAS A GREAT MAN AND ACTOR

  • man...do i miss this man...hes awesome....and the man u get on the screen was the man in real-life...my hero. i believe in the afterlife---and after i hug my grandmother and grandfathers/relatives----and my shay {dog} killed by a car....the duke will be the first man i seek out....miss him so much...he is everything america stands for..

  • A great movie, it was not well-publicized & didn't do well when it was released in early '72, ABC (I think) bought it & showed it in the 72-73 TV season, that's when I saw it & wondered why I had never heard of it before, my brothers & I loved it! I even have a copy. The kids did a good job. Homer was on Judge Judy a few years ago for something (I'm pretty sure it was Mike Pyeatt).

  • John Wayne one of the Best.5 stars.

  • Now a days he'd be thrown in jail for child abuse, and the kid would go off to therapy to rid himself of the suicidal tendencies that he would be suspect of having after that emotional beating that he received from the Duke.

  • good point.

  • One of my favorite scenes from the movie. It's funny, when I was in Iraq we started a conversation on what we would take with us if we were only allowed one movie. I picked this one! Thanks for posting!

  • Best movie ever made. Too many good scenes to count. There will never be another movie made so perfectly illuminating the passage of boyhood into manhood.

''We're gonna finish the job'' is my favorite scene and still raises the hair on my neck when I see it.

  • Can someone please please post the scene when Slim says "We're gonna finish the job."

  • The Cowboys

  • what movie is this....

  • Straight-talk express, The Duke, Politically Incorrect and proud of it!

  • this movie was awesome-my favorite duke film--so many great scenes--the duke/dern fight sequence is one of the best ever filmed

  • that was an awesome movie and a pretty good method I would say

  • Cool...
