I always felt like John Wayne himself could benefit from speech therapy due to his flat, flat voice. Berating those who have a neurological condition such as stuttering is simply as bad as berating someone with Cerebral Palsy. One can't help what one inherits.
If you notice, this was a WESTERN, turn of the Century America in the Badlands. Can you imagine how MEANER it was in REAL LIFE? Put yourself in the "context of the Film", not TODAY :p
Also, the Director said of Wayne in the Documentary that he was real easy to work with gentleman (and he was SHOCKED that he was), he was a dedicated Family man as well, even with his (I believe) 3 divorces, he was always close to his children :).
The young boy playing Bob is Sean Michael Kelly. Sean and I met at St. Elisabeth's school in the San Fernando Valley when I was age 12. These days he's a baptist minister. What ashame nothing was done to reveal who these young boys were as young kid actors, their dreams and goals. Too much focus was made on John Wayne in the behind the scenes stories and not on the boys who starred in the movie and did a wonderful job carrying the story. - K. Montague
Waynes method might work short term but not cure. Cursing, singing etc can allow stutters to talk. Stutterer, country singer, Mel Tillis, said he was performing with a famous comedian somewhere. They shared a room. He woke up in the middle of the night and discovered an intruder was in their room robbing them. He said he was absolutely speechless at first but managed to sing loudly, "Oh Johnny wake up there is a robber in our room!" they both got up and the startled thief fled.
i realy hate the stupid people who coment and say a logical reason for a studer its a movie who says its saposed to be real?? and tgen there the extreamly retarted people who mess with the duke i would love to see your dumbass tell him your real feelings!! so how about you just fuck off
Well, he got the job done! I mean, curing that kid of stuttering. In that kind of a situation, you can't have that kind of a handicap impede you of telling someone when another man's life is in danger. As he said, he could have drowned.
@Thisorderlykonduct Brave words directed at a man years in his grave. Tell you what, you go find someone who is a complete stranger and film yourself yelling at them what you wrote here about Wayne, and if they don't cave your skull in...I'll give a whole quarter.
@Thisorderlykonduct bullshit. you should read up on the man instead of repeating crap told by people who were jealous of the Duke's popularity and didn't like his politics. He most likely would've kicked your ass on his worst day.
This is an honest movie showing what happens when a man corrects a kid who nearly let his friend die. Then the kid got angry, said things he shouldn't have, then he realized he was able to conquer his problem.
The movie is showing exactly what happens in real life sometimes.
@icartoon2. Brother, you need to grow up. Put away this childish crap and develop a skin if you are going to be online preaching Christ and him crucified.
1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things
I was one of those who defended you. Maybe a session of strong meds would help with your anger problems.
Loved the old fashion methods! Someone told my dad that I had ADHD and that I needed an evaluation and medication and treatments. My dad just listened. Then he brought me home and beat my a#@ until I couldn't walk. Never took one ADHD pill or evaluation or treatments. Those methods work!
I love the Duke, but it only works that way in the movies. Stuttering is a serious problem which requires years of therapy and even then most people are not completely cured, but only learn to deal with it and tricks to prevent it. Actually, screaming at a child would only make the stuttering worse in most cases. The child may have been able to not stutter while he was intensely angry, but that cure is only short lived. Just hope your child doesn't have that problem.
@crylo1800vtx are you implying a John Wayne western wasn't an entirely accurate representation of complex linguistic problems? I am shocked and appalled good sir.
Something I found out from one of the kid actors when I talked to him in person. They were afraid of Bruce Dern during the filming of this movie. The read actors were. Dern was that good of a villain and a actor.
At a similar age to the boy actor I, too, had a stutter! I resented Wayne in this scene-it's as if he something of a speech therapist!-an expert! The scene is well crafted, but, alas, not true to real life. No-one gets 'cured' with such a barbaric ticking off. Stuttering is not self-inflicted.
@notatnik150 Really? It's "not true to real life?" Are you kidding? I thought this was a documentary. ... Look simpleton, before there were "speech pathologists" and other so-called "experts," there was stuttering. They had to deal with it some way, this presents one way (getting the guy past his self-crafted layering of protection to his core). Maybe like scaring someone out of hiccups. I have no doubt that this could have worked even if it's not recommended now.
@proffromgview Methinks you are a complete idiot!! An uneducated one at that judging by your inane remarks. How long have you been an idiot? Since birth? Runs in the family?!
Does anybody remember a tv show, which was set in a school, that resolved a storyline in a similar way? It was about a teenager who stuttered, but finally stopped after he got so angry at his classmates taunting him.
Wow! Now I know I don't even need to take a course in dysfluency! I'll just incorporate the techniques of John Wayne! Let's just give him his C's right away!
Get over yourselves you 21st century suits and "clinicians". Those of us who grew up with 19th cnetury men quickly learned our jobs-we didn't whine, moan, or pity ourselves. We did learn self confidence ,independence, and learned to laugh at ourselves and circumstances. "toughening in " was a great preparation for life when you were told " why a little lady like you would waste our money".Then the suits were surprised when they were surpassed. Ranch life was great preparation.
John Wayne's character could use a better understanding of neurophysiology. Cursing involves a different area of the brain than ordinary speech. Stroke victims will often lose the ability to talk except for cuss words, for example. It's quite common for stutterers to curse without stuttering.
@EdWatts If I had an fast-growing, advanced Wernike's area brain tumor, I wouldn't want you diagnosing and treating it.But I'd have no trouble calling you an asshole, though I wouldn't be able to tell you why.

Just goes to show that Republicans are wasting time running as "centrist" candidates. That is just code for liberal.
john wayne...american. duke at his fuckin best. if every american kid had a dad like the duke we would be a bunch of bad ass son of a bitches...god bless ya duke.
Agreed. My old man was a spittin' image of the duke. Except for the fact that my dad could bench 550lbs. and let me know the hard way when I fouled up. His beliefs and morals were passed on to me just as I am doing to my own. The world is going to hell and fast, At least if I raise my kin right, I will know there is still some hope for the future of this country.

A great movie, it was not well-publicized & didn't do well when it was released in early '72, ABC (I think) bought it & showed it in the 72-73 TV season, that's when I saw it & wondered why I had never heard of it before, my brothers & I loved it! I even have a copy. The kids did a good job. Homer was on Judge Judy a few years ago for something (I'm pretty sure it was Mike Pyeatt).
Now a days he'd be thrown in jail for child abuse, and the kid would go off to therapy to rid himself of the suicidal tendencies that he would be suspect of having after that emotional beating that he received from the Duke.
One of my favorite scenes from the movie. It's funny, when I was in Iraq we started a conversation on what we would take with us if we were only allowed one movie. I picked this one! Thanks for posting!
Best movie ever made. Too many good scenes to count. There will never be another movie made so perfectly illuminating the passage of boyhood into manhood.
''We're gonna finish the job'' is my favorite scene and still raises the hair on my neck when I see it.

Stuttering has nothing to do with "willpower" or "overcoming" fear.
It is a neurological deficit managed by methods of breathing, managing muscular stress, and training oneself to respond to dysfluent moments.
Such ignorance.
So glad that the Duke can solve all problems so easily...what a cowardly way to live.
His generation receives Medicare and Social Security, yet continue to vote in politicians who are attempting to end these programs.
