(BC)--D--(EF) = 3 whole steps (short distance),,,(EF)--G--A--(BC) = 4 whole steps(long distance).This divides the whole steps between the half-steps in a straight line,,The adjacent string 4th above is your long distant . Use your half-steps as reference points.Go to the next octave and do the same!
