What an inspiring story! Having managed through hot summers as a child , with just a tiny air conditioner, and yet becoming the successful actor/ performer/ comedian/commentator or whatever it is Ben Stein gets paid lots of money for. And all through hard work, as we know he didn't do all with just good-looks and a winning persoanlity! No wonder the man complains about the injustice of having to pay more taxes!

I agree Ben. Thank the devine for AC the masses may enjoy. I remember the summer of 1980 unfondly. over one hundred days over one hundred degrees. My god, standing in line for the midnight movie and the mall sign declaration of 12:22am 105 degree enjoy CocaCola.

The first central heat and air unit from the 60's started to die that summer. It was replaced two years later with an even bgger more efficient heat pump unit and a load of insulation on top. Fortunately global warming is crap.

One interesting thing: people used to be MUCH THINNER before AC. It's very hard on people to be really fat in the heat. All tropical cultures have almost all skinny people--the heat itself makes you want to eat less. In fact, hot spices are typically added to foods from tropical areas specifically in order to raise metabolisms, to increase appetite.
