  • So, is Mantarok the actual antagonist?

  • Eternal Darkness. The best game of Rock Paper Scissors ever!

  • @Pyroimp damnit. You just beat me to that comment.

  • Comment removed

  • Who's Mantorok? Sorry, but I'm not too familiar with this game.

  • @earthshaker1213 In this game each magic has an "Ancient" Chattur´gha (red) beats Xel´lotath (green) but Xel´lotath beats Ulyath (blue) wich beats Chattur´gha.

However there is a fourth magic coresponding to Mantorok (purple) wich beats them all. Also each Ancient represents something:

    Chattur´gha = Brawn

    Xel´lotath = Mind

    Ulyath = Magic

    Mantorok = Chaos

Even more interestign there is supose to be a yellow ancient but his apearence is only subtle and he/she/it is never given a name.

  • @SqueeeX3 It my opinion, I found Ulyoath to be normal and Xel'otath to be Hard, because, how much much sanity can be lost if your not careful. plus Headless Bone thieves (my mortal enemy)

  • My aunt bought me this game for christmas when i was ten...I had nightmares for 2 months after beating it...thanks tia!

  • I, personally, always thought that Mantorok was a more benign (To humanity) version of Nyarlathotep. He nudged the Roivas family- and others- in the right direction, and orchastrated the deaths of the other three Ancients.

Everything went according to his plan.

  • All hail Chattur'gha

  • How did you record this video?

  • @FacingWorlds I hooked my Gamecube up to a DVD recorder.

  • Bah, ancients. Once they have a lot of power: they get lazy! Typical, eh? x)

  • @Bidmartinlo *looks at the Stargate Ancients*

    Yup, I'd agree with that.

  • Will someone just put a bullet in its head and be done with it already?

  • This is like some "call of Cthullu" shit right here!!!!

  • So, Mantorok is the mastermind of all, and he destroyed the ancients in porpouse

  • ...anyone see the resembelence between mantorok and the forgotten one from Warcraft 3 the frozen throne?

  • @LonelyShade4 Not surprising, considering both were pretty much a nod to H P Lovecraft's stories.

  • I was hoping for something more final than Mantorok to be left to plot...maybe an eventual epic sequel?

  • Suddenly I'm annoyed by the incorrect usage of the world 'Decimated'. Still one of my most favourite games of all time though.

  • Mantotok reminds me of the nuclear apocalypse I've come to know and love as Azathoth.

  • one of the most underated games on the cube. I wish they would have made a sequel to it. but i know that aint gonna happen anytime soon.

  • Anyone else know that there was a fith God? It was yellow, it was never mentioned in the games and we'll never know (unless a sequel comes out) if it was an ally or foe to us. Remember the yellow zappy floor? that was part of that God's creation. Remember the yellow wraps that appear on creatures before they disintigrate? that's apart of that God's creation. Remember how at the end when you activate those ruins to portal to the end boss and how they're yellow until you change the colour? yep..

  • @Jill4ChrisRedfeild How do you know that the yellow color was a God's power? I'd love to explore that little tid-bit :)

  • @SamusVSMC I also read that Silcon Knights made that as a fith God but they didn't add it in - in full detail - because of the deadline on the game. It's really worth looking into

  • gamecube-the most underrated system of all time

  • @xdoods Thats a pretty bold statement, considering it wasn't actually underrated. Except I happened to be in 9th grade at the time, so I did notice a little of that whole "gamecube is for kids" crap that some 14 year olds held on to. But, really, that was looked down upon even at that age.

  • I would love for a sequel for this game with better graphics. The possibilities are endless as long as there is creativity.

  • Dude more people need to know about this wonderful game. Its really a cult classic now. I hear that a sequal is going to come one day. Why did it get looked over so much?

  • this game is a great homage on lovecraft

  • I have completet the game once, and I will not do it again because it was very difficult and sometimes frustrating...it has taken me almost a year to finish.

  • @Brumbazzen

You just suck at playing games. Green and blue are the easy paths. Once you learn the game mechancis such as enchanting weapons and where to aim at most enemies fall in two or even one attacks.

  • Roivas = Savior backwards.

  • @MangaPlCTURE MIND = BLOWN

  • @TyVulpine Heh well, we'll just have to disagree on that. I've had the game since 2002 and I've played it too many times to count. It's one of my most replayed games.

  • @AtlasShrugg3d I know a lot of people love the game, I can respect that, I'm just one of those that found it boring. (And nothing against Nintendo, I've had every one of their systems)

  • @AtlasShrugg3d I totally agree with you man, i have too since 2003 and have beaten it a thousand times, i simply love this game.

  • @AtlasShrugg3d IT WAS over rated, and was not worth play through 3 times for such a crappy ending...after the n64 nintendo went downhill...the game cube was the worst console ever....only zelda the windwaker and metalgear solid twin snakes, skies of arcadia and res 4 were goood... rest of the games were shiiiiiit

  • @ILLRICARDO glad you have your opinion xD If u think it was over rated, your opinion. I think it was not, my opinion. This is the kind of discussion where we go nowhere. Makes no sense to discuss if the game is good or bad, it's just an opinion

  • @ILLRICARDO

Hey, you. You're twelve and nobody is going to take your opinion seriously.

  • @Easytoremembermember what ever!!!!!

  • @AtlasShrugg3d I mean i like the game.

  • @TyVulpine "I traded the game in as soon as I finished and have not touched it since." Well obviously you haven't touched it since...

  • @TyVulpine You know, if you beat it multiple times you also can unlock using Matorok spells and defeat anything in your path, right? Pretty kickass shit

  • @TheSylvanPariah You can find the Mantorok rune as early as your 1st playthrough. Sadly, I forgot which chapter it was, but it featured the archeologist. With cunning mind, you can find it with him~

  • nice game i like it so much

  • Tier Pargon Pargon Chattur´gah Pargon Pargon Aretak Pargon Pargon = Death of the crazy green bitch of the universe :P

(logically all 3 ancients would have been killed by you all at once if Mantorok was used) but... Logic is for pussies, right?

  • i love this game

  • Could someone explain to me what the worms symbolize? I've played through the Ulyaoth and Xel'lotath versions and I'm not sure what they are, at first I thought they were Mantorock. It's probably obvious but I don't know, is it from Lovecraft?.

So far I've only read Dagon by Lovecraft so I'm ignorant of a lot of references within the game.

  • @GrinderCorpse

Mantorock used 2 worms to grab the guards during the dancer chapter, so most likely they belong to him.

  • This game was forking awesome! I just finished it, on Ulyaoth setting. Now i can't get half the spells out of my head.

    Tier Pargon Aretak Ulyaoth Pargon

    See?

...and now there's a zombie in my room.

Mantorok looks like looks like a Shoggoth(Mountains of Madness) to me.

  • Anyone else think that Mantorok is derived from Yog-Sothoth

  • @iamqqqqqqq Not me, no. I think Mantorok was likely based on the "blind idiot god", "Demon Sultan", Azathoth. He was the greatest of the Outer Gods and acted as the representation of Chaos in the Universe. Ulyaoth is the most like Yog-sothoth. He is the outer god that controls interdimensional gates, gates between time and space. He is pictured as a creature surrounded by iridescent globes that rotate around him, seeming to glow in and out of existence

  • @AtlasShrugg3d Yeah, that makes sense

  • @AtlasShrugg3d

I agree that the reference of Mantorok is more likely related to Azathoth who is in charge of the whole Universe (Lovecraft's),

but It's been stated that Yog-Sothoth is the only one that is "cleary" (not my words) stronger than Azathoth and more wiser than that god that knowns everything because it exsists everywhere and at all times.

That being said, Yog-Sothoth is probably not Ulyaoth, seeing as how on the food-chain of the mythos, he's on top and can't be beaten.

  • Anyone play warcraft III? Mantorok looks exactly like the Nameless One in the Frozen Throne expansion. They had to be taken from the same place.

  • @iamqqqqqqq so basically the entities in this game were pastiches of H.P. Lovercraft's slime-infested, pulsating "outer gods", huh

  • @iamqqqqqqq No. After this ending, all I can think of is Ubbo-Sathla. Because, you know, parachronic conspiracies seem more like Nyarlathotep's boat, but if Nyarlathotep pulls off his "plan," if you can call it that, shit is gonna happen.

Mantorok goes through all that trouble to end up with three obscure old ones now one cares about except this one roman dude killing themselves off and then... not doing anything.

It TOTALLY makes sense for an outer god, though.

  • go mantorok you sneaky f**k. hope theres a sequel...wev been waiting long enough

  • the next game should have Mantorok as the antagonist

and probably they should have what they said the YELLOW ancient (that was never introduced) appear this time

  • @dkidluke Mantorok is the bad guy and the yellow ancient will appear in the next game

  • @Bjosto12CIG If there will be a next game. I hope there will be.

  • Heehe funny thats just the normal ending...

  • No, it's the special ending. The normal ending doesn't have this sequence.

  • @theratking013 This is indeed not the normal ending - you must complete the game 3 times while making Augustus choose a different god each time.

  • @theratking013

Um... no it isn't, obviously you never even finished one variation of the game, let alone all three.

  • The thing that makes this game so great is that it fucks with you when your sanity is low.

Like when you save your game and it says 'deleting file' (but actually does'nt). Falling INTO the floor, Flys that look realistic on the screen, healing yourself & exploding when casting a spell....

    I love it. :)

  • Mantorok has powers that let him converge and apparantly exist in multiple universes, he planned everything in the binding of himself. I doubt he'll let himself die, he'll keep plotting well into the future.

  • GREAT game.

  • Eternal Darkness Hit The Spot On The Cube =)

  • I thought it was obvious that Mantorok was pulling the strings and manipulating the Roivas family; what other explanation could there be for them constanly getting the Tome of Eternal Darkness? When I first played the game I thought, "Mantorok must be pissed and because he knows he is dieing he doesnt want the others to win'.

  • ah, I managed to get the mantorok spell, that was cool :)

  • This game is so underrated, deserves a sequel...

  • @MrFadify

I agree, it's just so hard to find a developer to pick up where Silicon Knights left off! I would be happy with a nintendo remake at this point!

  • @MrFadify um... no information has been given on it, but Silicon Knights is making a sequel to an action horror thriller that they made, that's all that was given on it... and you know what genre this game is? An action-horror thriller lol

  • @MrFadify i think it will, ED-the return of mantarok!

  • @MrFadify I second the emmotion! will Mantarock become the main villian? Or will the idea for the sequel be more of a prequel?

  • @MrFadify No.

This game is too good for a sequel.

    theyd only mess it up.

  • no sry cha'turgha killed xel'otath sry i typed it wrong

  • a sequel cannot come because it was a in memory of game... and it already ended maybe not for mantorok. But i have a question how could they kill each other like that first cha'turgha or whatever killed ulyoth (sry i dnt know how to type it) and then *dead* xel'otath kiled ulyoth and then *dead' ulyoth killed *dead*cha'turgha lol and so theres only one explonation about that they killed each other at the same time or i dnt know

  • they fouhgt each other all in separt dimensions but beacuse these gods are somewhat multidemetional when they were destroyed in one universe they were destroyed in all but sence all three fights apponed at the same instant they were all destroyed (sorry for spelling)

  • Well, though their bodies are destroyed, and their power decimated, their spirits still linger... Even without a physical presence, a spiritual presence is still enough to influence reality to an extent...

And so long as their spirits exist, there is always a chance that they may be discovered, and mortals craving power may find a way to restore their matter and energy, in the hopes that they might gain dominion over them.

But if anything, their restoration would ensure the Darkness's Victory.

  • time travel shenanigans: they didn't kill each other at the same time

  • brilliant game! however this ending leaves the gates WIDE OPEN for a sequel especially the way it ends with 'plotting!' ED2 PLEASE SILICON KNIGHTS!!

  • I finished that game three times and i still think that game is not completed yet there hast to be something else it's still the same ending the three times :/

  • For me this sounds like SEQUEL

  • Very very very good game. I became so obsessed with it that I even completed The Autopsy Book. Beating it three times, using different Ancients only seemed natural to me. The special ending was quite the treat. Sent tingles up my spine. lol. I hope this game gets a sequel. GREAT GC game, probably one of the best titles available for the platform, right next to RE4. ED surely deserves a sequel, or at the very least a remake.

  • yeah i became quite obsessed with it aswell...i remember i was about to finish the second alignment, i was in the last chapter with alex but i didn't remember what spell to use so i entered another saved game with another alignment and accidently saved it overwriting my other game, i was so pissed then i couldn't even believe what i had just done...but it couldn't stop me to finish the game with the 3 alignments.

  • Does anyone think that he would be a good ruler of humanity?

  • mantorak reminds me of azatoth from the call of cthulhu....

  • This game was great when it came out. I'd buy it if they remade it. It definitely has a strong Lovecraft influence, which is all the better.

  • Chattur'gha is Rock.

    Ulyaoth is Paper.

    Xel'lotath is Scissors.

    Mantorok is that cheap-as-hell Bomb.

  • Mantorok is Mushroom.

  • then who is badger and snaaaaaaaake

  • Sad

  • What's sad?

  • yes porr mantrok

  • @EnkerZero You have no idea how right you are on that, Chattur'gha is Rock because of his power to dominate over Scissors. Xel'lotath is scissors because there are two parts to scissors, two blades that are used to CUT (maybe reality and sanity..) and work together - Xel has two personalities. She also beats Paper, which is Ulyoath, who's the one left over in the game. As you said, Mantorok is that cheap as hell bomb that was just unlucky enough to be tied down by rock, paper and scissors.

  • Wow, so the poor Mantorok almost killed by all the Ancients, decide to play the mastermind and annihillate all his enemies.

I LOVE guys like him, unseen winners.

  • Glad you posted this. I like the game and all, I just don't like it enough to beat it 3 times in a row.

  • Mantorok reminds me very much of the Elder God,from the Legacy of Kain series...

  • Silicon Knights made this game, so it was likely inspired by it.

  • Mantorok come from the Cthuluth Mythology so its inspirate from the same book.

  • Huh. That was pretty rad. I originally got the game back in 8th grade, never beat it, traded it in, and just recently re-bought it. I just beat it tonight (1st time) and I really dont want to beat it two more times. It's cool too, you kind of forget about Mantorock after a while. I never figured he used the Roivas'. The game was amazing though.

  • Thanks for uploading this one, it was ages since I played ED! Don't think I ever finished it though, but I know the story was great

And much deeper than appears at first..

  • Actually in one of the videos Pious tells his ancient that the binding of Mantorok fueled by the ancient who he serves power will hold for now. So I'm not actually sure whether the binding will last or not. He'll probably need someone to help unbind him.

  • I don't think that's necessary. If someone sees the title "Special Ending" and doesn't realize that this means he's getting a spoiler, then he's suffering from a form of mental deficiency that can't be overcome by a simple word, and thus putting "SPOILER" into the title won't help much.

    No offense.

  • Agreed.

  • You guys don't have to overwrite your file to unlock this. After you beat the game and start a new one it will ask you if you want to carry that information over. I have three separate files from each play through and still unlocked the special movie. You can keep your old save and fight pious again whenever you want.

  • Since Augustus derived his power from an Ancient, and now they are all dead, is not Mantorok free/uncursed and/or again a god?

  • Nope. Augustus used Mantorok's magic to bind him, not the magic of the ancient he served. Mantorok is bound by his own magic.

Apparently the magic of the ancients is under your control if you know how to use it, so Mantorok has no ability to undo that spell.

  • yes, yes you can... but... in the same file were you ended the game before....

  • no, it means that you have to end the game 3 in the same file... overwrite it after you are done with one ancient, then beging the game again in the same file but picking a diferent ancient

  • ETERNAL DARKNESS was one of the few games tha made having a cube worth it.

  • Wind Waker, Metal Gear Solid, Animal Crossing, Starfox, custom Robo, sonic adventure 2, paper mario, smash bros., metroid, mario kart, pikmin...i rest my case.

  • exactly , those few games against a whole library of crappy games that the cube had

  • you have the cub

e mixed up with the wii

  • I'd say it doesn't matter how many crappy games were on the platform, it's the quantity and quality of amazing games that counts. To me, the ps2 is the best of last gen, but it has a multitude of horrible games on it, but that doesn't count against it. It's the best that count.

  • the Cube was sooooo not crap. It has some good games.

  • @RyanLuckyNinko no ryan it wasnt, the system was crap, but the games were good, sms, this game, loz wind waker, loz twi princess, really dude, it wasnt crap

  • @xdoods I forgot all about this comment

  • @RyanLuckyNinko

It did, but it didn't have enough good games. Too much soccer mom caliber gaming, not enough epic win. The wii follows in its footsteps.

  • @RyanLuckyNinko Some??Almost the entire library of the cube games is awesome...ALMOST the entire library

  • Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes...

It seems that you are, in fact, the moron...

  • QQ nub.

  • I mean you have to beat the game three times in a row, picking a different ancient each time.

  • Yeah when that joystick thing happened to me. It freaked me out so much. I was like "Holy sh*t!!! Kill them!!! AAAAAHHHH!" then I realized it was just a sanity thing. Hands down the scariest/coolest programming in game, that I've ever played.

  • maybe because u kept healing up ur sanity all the time LOL...try to play without sanity the whole game, maybe u will get used until the end, but its impossible to not get scared the first times, when u get messages saying your gamecube will explode or something and your joystick simply stop working when 10 zombies surround u...

  • Bathtub FTW.

  • i heard talk of a second game

  • Silicon Knights just went under... :(

  • they did :( ?

  • O shi-...that sucks... :(

  • No, they didn't.

  • This is the only game that I have played that scared me.This blows games like Resident Evil,Fatal Frame and Silent hill out of the water.

  • I dunno... I mean, I played Fatal Frame 1 after ED... Eternal Darkness is definitely the better game, but to say that it blows FF away is a bit harsh.

Now, if you'd just said Resi... n_n

  • Mantorok: The ugly cousin of Cthulhu

  • Isn't Mantorok similar to Shub-niggurath? Just, without the 1000 descendants?

  • As far as I know, Shub-Niggurath is never given a defined form by Lovecraft (Don't know if Derleth said something about it). But then again, if I ever see any of the Ancients I couln't tell them apart... they're all slimey, gigantic and smelly.

  • That is true, not to mention you might loss your grip on humanity. ^w^

Eh, I'm just basing shub on what illustrations I've seen of her so far...she's not winning any beauty contests in the future I can tell you that. -_-

  • what console is this for

  • Gamecube

  • "Formatting memory card, please wait." No no no!!!

  • This can't be happening!!! :D

  • This game was amazing.

  • Mantorok looks like nightmare from devil may cry 1/3

  • Is this game for PS2

  • GameCube only.

  • cool, i could buy it for my wii

  • I wish for a sequel.

  • Ahhh, I love this game. <333

  • It's funny how the first time through you really don't get any idea at all that your being used by Mantorok. Without him Alex and the other wouldn't have been able to win. It leaves open the question of what the now victorius Mantorok is going to do in the future.

  • I didn't knew this final. Thanks for share :)

  • Love this game! My nephew played it years ago and it took me a few years but I was able to find a copy.

The problem was I had a horrible time trying to get past the Black Guardian. Tried forever to do it. I finally did and finished the game the three times.

I'm still hoping for a sequel. Its such a good game it would be terrible if they didn't continue the story. Especially since he makers want to. Anyway, I at least want to find an brand new copy of the original I've worn out 2.

  • Denis Dyack has confirmed at least one sequel to Eternal Darkness. However, it won't happen until they finish with the Too Human trilogy.

  • wow too human 1 still hasnt came out yet so thats going to be awhile then huh?

  • Too human sucked fucking razor sharp dicks. if they make an eternal darkness sequel it better not be made by the same guys who made Too human.

  • this game was so fukin good!
