Yes, boosters will slow down the cart in the opposite direction, but only if you're not high enough above the maximum speed. Just boost more to stay way above the threshold, and you should be good. Also, the most reliable booster I've found is a linear one that runs up a long hill. It's self-resetting and never fails when chunks unload/reload. At the top of the hill, the cart would hit a wall and roll back into the perfect position on its own. Plus, you don't lose any momentum on the hill.

@w00dYd3luXe disappearing? As in you hit it and it goes away or you walk 50 miles away and it is gone?
If you hit it and it is gone, check somewhere farther down track. If you are going a billion miles away, it is a glitch in minecraft due to how that stuff is saved, placed mine carts will fall out of the memory if you go too far away.
im in 1.0.0 and i use this method and my cart spun for fuckin ages
