  • Thank you for a riveting performance. You make this scene the dramatic high point of the operetta.

  • Iolanthe has always been one of my favorite G&S operattas along with Mikado, The Sorcerer, and Ruddigore.

  • Really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for posting it. Also I must say i am rather sick of mezzos always being told to push their voices up- surely it is up to the individual to decide what feels right as I am sure this singer has done. All the best :)

  • Excellent acting and convincing. Although your voice 'works' in this range it lacks the resonating ring of its natural place, i.e. as a soprano. Tessa and some parts will work but I would prefer you to avoid the mezzo parts and allow a beautiful instrument do what it was created to do.

  • Iolanthe is probably one of G&S more underrated operettas but it remains one of my favorites, and this appears to be a good performance. Well done and thanks for posting.

  • This is just wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing. You are superb and how thrilling to hear, even briefly, the Lord Chancellor actually *sung* as well as acted.

    Iolanthe... thou livest.

  • Ecstatic rapture! Your performances are marvelous.

  • You've done both Phyllis and Iolanthe? Which one did you enjoy more?

  • I think I enjoyed them both equally - both had their moments! Iolanthe suffers from too little stage time, but the time she does get is wonderful. It's not just a matter of the role, but the production. A good production can allow you to enjoy a role you're not that keen on!

  • I always thought that Iolanthe was veiled in this scene?

  • Not always - all it requires is the removal of the "My veil" line prior to the song. As long as the Chancellor doesn't get a full view of Iolanthe's face, it can work without.

  • @HarryHayfield The way in which Iolanthe's face is hidden is sometimes up to the director -- I just finished a production in which a mask was used instead of a veil.
