In think a useful way to explain the reality of the natural inclination to give and receive is to notice the breath. We breathe in, and then exhale. We receive, then we give. Not because it's "good" but because we have to, in order to live. :-) It's what we're born to do...
I like his line of thought but he makes some statements about anthropological prehistory that seem to be gross generalizations. I don't think all primitive cultures were gift cultures. Some were - others kept slaves, others sacrificed virgins.
Do you think that slavery and virgin sacrifice as inherently incompatible with gift culture? I don't know, but the answer doesn't seem immediately obvious to me.
I agree.... there are breaks in the logic. And if we take a longer view... many of us have given for centuries... now its time to receive! The gift HAS been given! aho
Wonderful and very logical ideas. I suppose many foreigners , who have problems with understanding spoken English ,could profit from these lectures if they were in witten form as well .
O great! I'v read his book and now i get to hear him talking. I'm glad he sounds as good as he reads! He makes the most sense i've heard in a long time.
