I'm not sure that this review is all that accurate. The Golf TDI has a standard sports suspension taken from the GTI. The regular Golf doesn't have a sports suspension; it's not even available as an option. So when the reviewers say it handles great, which Golf are they referring to? They keep showing the TDI on the course, not the regular Golf which I've heard is a little soft.
"Fuel economy is not that impressive for a small car." On the highway it gets almost 50 mpg... the next best option is a Geo--oh, they don't make those anymore. Prius, but that's a hybrid. Hmmmm... BS.
The 2.5 5-cyl is a based on Lambo's V10 actually. And it sounds like one; plus it has lots of torque it feels much more beef then numbers suggest. And it's being used (with turbo) in Audi TT-RS and Audi RS3, pushing more than 400+ hp. TDI is pretty good engine too, gotta love the economy ;)
At the beginning and end he states the fuel consumption figures are good... in the mid-section of the clip he says its really not impressive for a small car... ! This guy is seriously confused...
@fluentblue No, it was just bad editing on their part. They tested two Golf trims ( the base 2.5L gasoline and the TDI a.k.a turbo diesel). The TDI gets excellent gas mileage, but that's not so for the base 2.5L.
You guys are so true about this guys.. I think the best Consumer Report to listen is Top Gear (the one over-seas, not in America)! At least they are truthful, test out cars properly, and they have fun doing it!
This dude is boring...I have no idea how he got picked to be in this video...I own a 2010 2.5 5 cylinder Golf and i love it. He says the engine isnt refined enough and that it sounds wierd..I think the engine is awesome and sounds like a mini V10 (lol well its half one) Consumer reports are people i never listen to i just laugh at their reviews and in this vid they certainly have no idea of how to make something fun and enjoyable...this will be the last vid of CR i view....
@VidSir I think so. I mean for the driving I do, 1,200km's per tank roughly it's great. with my grand prix gtp I have to fill up every 4 days. premium.
This car is now higher rated in terms of reliability than the Honda Accord (Spring 2010 Ratings & Pricing). Take the consumer reports red pill and you discover a vast, hidden world of treasures. You don't always have to listen to jsheep. Do the research then have some nice green eggs and ham.
When you say "this car", do you mean base, or TDI, or what? The last c-reports I checked didn't really say anything about the TDI. They did say that the gasser was very reliable and the GTI was very unreliable. I am thinking about buying a TDI but I don't want a car that will have to be repaired all the time. Finding out whether it will or not has proven to be quite a task.
Thanks to your reviews, and my input/influence of diesel power!) my mother recently bought a 2010 Jetta TDI. She LOVES it. It is an impressive, well built little car. I am not a car person, but I love my diesel power. I have 2 Dodge 3500s with the Cummins and a Jeep Liberty CRD. I love those too!
In EU all driving schools use diesels, fuel costs, and maintenance are much lower (and better resale value), due to the amount of low end torque its much easyer to a new driver because they are almost "impossible" to stall, how the hell u find it harder is beyond me. Like any car it should be driven acording to the hp/torque curve, in a diesel its lower, its pointless and stupid to rev them like a gasoline one, low revs are one of the main reasons behind long engine life, and economy on diesels.
@digitalrebelxti These are made in Germany. First 3 years maintenance is free and after that is not any more than other car brands. The 2.5L is faster, better sounding than the diesel and only 17k. Reliability scores are very high at least for consumer reports and have not heard really any issues but its new so time will tell. Civic si starts around 23k for a base one not fully loaded.

@mjgc8755 This was for the 2010 model I believe. The 2011s get the RCD-310 which is much more elegant looking and very easy to use.

You get higher mileage with a manual, and since it's a diesel, you'll get more mileage. Automatic isn't all bad though.

I was talking about the Golf TDi!
digitalrebelxti 1 year ago
This car makes sense only on paper!
1. It is expensive to buy! The TDi is around 24K $ on the dealerships!
2. It is expensive to maintain. The schedule maintenance bills are really high!
3. If yo up for navigation and some other options yo pay like 27K $!
4. This car is assembled in Mexico and the reliability scores aren't that good!
5. Mazda 3 S Sport, Civic Si or Corolla XRS are just better value for the price (around 22K $ fully loaded), and they are much cheaper to maintain!
