  • one of the best bands in the world, ever, Fighting Cocks, Moseley, 1980, anyone?

  • Lesley and Paul drip sexiness

  • Great underrated band. Saw them so many times in 1980-81 when they seemed to play pretty much any gig going, and loads of political benefits/rallies etc .Terrific memories, thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for the upload. Brought back so many good memories that I might jjust have to dig out the tape I made from a Marquee gig 1981? Think I saw them support the B52's a the Palais as well but I may be wrong. Still so very gorgeous....lesleywoodsdotcom

  • I have commented on this so many times, but hafta keep saying it...so brilliant! I loved this band so much!! It was one of the standouts of URGH! And they also chopped out the dirty words heh heh.

  • @audruchina- it's called "urgh-music war" hard to find but essential and amazing

  • Yeah. What a great band. And I admire the bands that add their contribution to the music world and then get the fuck out. As much as I love this band I would not want to go to an Au Pairs reunion show. I already had that disappointment with Gang of Four a couple years back.

  • A must, a classic... original & different.....

  • Good post, one of my fave Au Pairs tunes. Never saw them live but it must have been great. They sound excellent.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • come again, whewwwwwwwww

  • Nice! Got a Gang of Four vibe to it!

  • @mekkab definitely

  • LOL at Lux Interior interrupted at the end

  • This film was BRILLIANT! A true document of the importance of post-punk music. The Au pairs were one of the highlights!

  • @moss1310 What film is it?

  • της πουτάνας γινόταν τότε...

  • This from what has to be one of the most under rated films of all time.

  • @UnderStoryProd what film?

  • @suspect485 Urgh! A Music War is a film from the early 80's that has some of the best punk and new wave bands in their prime plus a bunch of flat out bizarre acts that are beyond description. It's a must see movie in my book !

  • per andare a dormire

  • god, i miss the edginess and rawness of energy of the music of the late 70's.

  • Je suis prise par une bande de SSs démons comment m'en sortir ?

  • love em'

  • This is amazing! I've never heard this band before but this is reeeeeeeeeally good!

  • Fucking GREAT

  • back then female orgasm was a big thing since then women have become bigger have they not

  • fuckin hell Les is fuckin scary

  • Love it.

  • Paul foad is my guitar teacher. A true ledgend!

  • you must give more than you take away

  • Don't like the choreography. Ministry of Silly Walks with Sjonnie Klees as very special advisor extra ordinaire was their advisor in this ?

  • paul foad's my guitar teacher XD what a don!

  • so fucking awesome, and so underrated.

  • so why you watching zionist cock sucker

  • kike kyke kykey crikey!

  • Paul foad, my guitar teacher =D

  • Vaguely remember this band from long ago - this song is awesome, very punchy. Anyone know of any cd re-issues out there?

  • There's a double-CD out called "Stepping out of line - the Anthology" that contains both original LPs, some singles and a few BBC session numbers. Just buy it! You won't regret it. Loads of great songs!

  • Thanks for posting. Still got the orignal albums - loved em' oh so long ago

  • brilliant

  • this song kicks ass...it's been at least twenty years since I've heard this!

  • and their roadi was hughgo burnham's brother. Why do I know that?

  • I'm playing this after London Lady by the Stranglers. Not to make up for it, just to pove there's good music and crap lyrics on both sides of the battle of the bleedin sexes.

  • the Au Pairs stood out due to their frontwoman, Lesley Woods, being an outspoken feminist and lesbian.

  • My favourite band from Uni (Leeds)

  • How i wish most bands are like this one!

    No ambitions and big convictions!

A good femmale voice without pretending to be a star

    i'm glad to find this....

so many years i don't listened to it....

Sorry for the english. i'm no good in UK speech....

    Thank's for d video.

    And kisses from Nuno.

  • They are showing "Urgh! A Music War" on the big screen in March in L.A. It's worth going just for this performance. Thanx for the upload mate.

  • I love Urgh! What cutting edge bands!

  • he worked at my college teaching guitar

    hes a right laugh

talks about all these people hes met all the time

  • what is this song about?

  • Well, methinks its about aving sex. a one night stand...and they "may do it again, do it again sometime." It ain't rocket science.

  • "This song's about faking orgasms. This is called Come Again."

  • Paul foad is my Music Teacher haah

  • is he still as hot and sexy looking?

  • hes 51, n looks the same, but is older. n im not gonna say that. im a guy haha

  • Please tell him to put this band together again, because they were amazing! :0)

  • im scared he will throw Jazz at me, he a right Jazz man now haha

  • Ms Woods is a lawyer these days, and not especially interested in reforming the band. It broke up under somewhat ambiguous financial circumstances.

  • Pete Hammond is my drum teacher xD

  • Please say hello to Pete for me, my name is Adrian Doyle, I was making a film of them in the 80's, even went to his place by Kings Heath ;) Cheers

  • Playing with a different sex...Brill album...Certainly made me take girl led bands seriously...

  • Love her facial expression...."I don't know if you want to."

  • I remember when I first heard this band on an Atlanta radio station around 1979 or `980. so great a band!!!!!

  • amazing band! 5 stars!

  • oldie but goodie

  • This Album is absolutely brilliant, I was never big on the punk, new wave, ect, movement.

But Urgh a music war is a definiate classic.

  • i like them, the woman loóks like my aunt ^^

im 18 years, and they rock :P 5/5 or grove^^

  • I've been listening to them since the came out around late 70's or early 80's. Check out Gang of Four if you like this band. Take care...good to hear the youth have good taste!

  • Someone knows the lyrics to "you" by this great band?

  • I remember seeing them at the Golden Eagle in 1977 when the 'world' was aflame - they were called the Leslie Woods Blues Band? I think they did a Janis Joplin cover.... oh yes, that continued. The Au Pairs were SWP-esque hippies, however...

  • her vocals occasionaly remind me of dorothy moskowitz.

  • Paul Foad, the chap on guitar is one hell of a guitar teacher now. He plays with Andy Hamilton with the bluenotes.

  • Born and Bred in Brum. The Aupairs are still one of the best and most original bands to come out of Moseley, Brum and UK. Politcal with great music. I'm still in love with Jane !!!

  • great to see some video arriving... i saw them at Pinkpop (1980 or 81) in Geleen, Limburg (of the Netherlands) and have the show on audio tape--thought for sure it was on video from the Dutch. They kicked ass and had a message before it was trendy.

    Paranoia in America!!

  • fucking brilliant--"playing with a different sex" is one of the great underappreciated albums of the early 80s.

  • Fantastic band and I have their 'Playing with a different sex' on vinyl somewhere in the house. Saw them in Edinburgh circa 1980.

  • Saw them at Portmouth Poly in either late 1980 or early 1981 - not sure when. This was in the old student union building and the venue wasn't that big - but packed!

Great set. (Incidentally - surprised there doesn't appear to be an official web-site devoted to them.)

  • Their best was "it's obvious", which I've still got on vinyl some where, but it could be buried under a load of used car parts.

  • great vid !! Thanx!!..Loved these people very much !!

  • I saw them live at Aberdeen, sheer class. But if someone has taken the time and trouble to get this down on video/film whatever (as opposed to just those phone nonsense stuff), it's highly unlikely this will be the only recording. Please post the rest.

I want to have my cake and eat it.

  • Loads of comments which is great, but can/he/ she/whoever load some of their other stuff, assuming it's available?

But many thanks for this "snippet" in any event.

I saw them at Aberdeen in 1981ish, and they were great, despite the fact that only about 50 people could be bothered to turn up to see them

  • Just a stupid anecdote: she'd only just turned up on stage, and Aberdonians were/are behind the times, so some idiot gobbed at her. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the rest, but she (Lesley) was half way off the stage to attack this guy while he was being hauled off by a couple of Roadies.

Although I was already into sort of "post punk" (especially The Cure), I remember thinking this is definately interesting...

  • I had the LP "Playing with a different sex". I loved it.

    Thanks!

  • the most terrifying song about sex i've ever heard

  • then you've never heard the swans (no offense)

  • Thanks for youtubing this.

The Au pairs were a great band with fantastic lyrics and such a peculiar sound.

  • Great song. I like a lot of songs off of "Urgh".

  • love this band - wish there were more vids of them

  • they're awesome (:

Paul Foad, lead guitar, is my teacher (Y)

  • Feck it was horrible in the early 80s and this was doing no favours for rep of the English in the bedroom...nah not tonight, partner of mine, I just can't objectify you enough...I'm retrenching.

  • brilliant!!

  • gang of four without the shit tunes

  • more like gang of four with a more explicit focus on feminism.

it would be great if punk were so critical of sexuality again.

  • come again you gotta laugh

  • Gang of Four without the good guitar playing. Lesley's great though.

  • their best song--"playing with a different sex" is still a great album. wish someone would get the legal crap out of the way and release "urgh!" on cd and dvd.

  • great live band saw them at bristol uni `81

  • BEST POST-PUNK BAND...FOR SURE!

  • watching them perform makes me like them a whole lot more. and i already liked 'em bunches before!

  • Yeah lol, Paul Foad is my guitar teacher... got him tomorrow. What a ledgend lol

  • Love Urgh!!! I wish there were more than 9,770 viewings...Tell your friends! :)

  • god i love the au pairs. also the rezillos

  • Thanks for sharing.. One of the best bands of the 80's

  • Wonderfull! i bought the record Playing with a different sex, somewhere in begin 80,s anyway.. A great record! and turn it now and then, today for example!

Great to meet the Au Pairs here!

  • God, I'm so gladsomebody else remembers them. They were the most enlightened band ever back then. Still always good to listen to - brings back the Reagan/Thatcher era in a horrible, blinding, delirious flash!

  • ...than you take away...man, Urgh! A Music War was an eye opener...

  • Paul is SO SEXY here!

  • i LOVED the au pairs back then. is this the only vid of them on youtube? i want more. this brings me back. where are all the angry young women today? jeez

  • paul foad teaches in St.georges school, edgebaston Birmingham

  • i know i play with him is in some of my vids ,great mate and teacher ,

  • shit and pete hammond,i must of fell asleep for 10 years ,think lesley sounds like susy and banshees

  • And let's not forget Jane Munro on bass. She never got quite the recognition Lesley did, in my opinion.

    This is great!!!

  • totally agree with that comment!

  • hahaa young paul foad lol hes a good mate ,wiked band ,how did i miss this growing up

  • great band

  • The younger so called "post post punk" or "new" or "neo" post punk bands, or whatever they're termed, all name-check the great bands from the late 70s/ early 80s, like Gang of Four, Josef K and Fire Engines and even the Raincoats, but there is one AMAZING band that seems forever neglected - The Au Pairs were AMAZING.

  • i just loved her whole demener

  • paul foad's website with his new book is cagedguitarist dot com

  • lmao paul foad is the guitar teacher at my collage, if anyone wants an autograph drop me a pm =)

  • I think it also needs to be said what a great bass player Jane Munro was - such a massive part of the Au Pairs sound, and totally tight always.....

  • Fantastic! I saw the Au Pairs in London in about 1982. The best gig I ever saw. Great, great live band. I met Paul once through Alex Knight and told him so but i don't know if he believed me. More footage please if anyone's got any!

  • I have now posted this on my facebook to educate my Au Pairless friends! lol :-D

  • I was there!!! And I had a massive crush on Paul!! I even sent him a red rose back stage! I bet he thought I was a silly little girl! I still have the pics from that gig!!!

  • thanks for posting, they are one of my all time favorites(since the early eighties - time is fleeting, isn´t it?!), i never got the chance to see them, so at least now - thanks again and what about a reunion concert in vienna, dear pete hammond?? or do i have to buy the dvd to see more, greetings from vienna, ursula

  • my dear ursula.sometimes it is best to leave things as they are.what we achieved burnt us out as we put our all into this band and it took it's toll(for rock'n'roll). Please continue to get a vibe off the few recordings we did and i hope you have a fulfilling life.many thanks and don't sell out.cheers Pete Hammond

  • I'm so glad you put as much as you did into it. Great vibe, and thanks for the great music.

  • Thank you for putting this here! I unfortunately only managed to lay hands on the Urgh! soundtrack album, and they're never going to air it here...

Strange, though, that this is the only Au Pairs song on youtube. I love them.

  • The Live from Harrah's New York City DVD also has them doing an awesome version of this song from way back when.

  • Totally agree with last comment, hasn't dated one bit. Always loved the lead singer's attitude.

  • Wonderful stuff from a wonderful band. Brings back great memories. Going down really well with my younger son too - great music speaks to all age groups. No generation gaps with bands like the Au Pairs. More videos please.

  • the lead singer,is she still?

  • Hafta post again after watching it for the third time. I remembered when I saw this movie in the theater, I noticed they cut out the "dirty" lyrics (is your finger aching, etc) and turned to my date, all indignant about it - he was clueless, but at that time so was I har har. Love it.

  • Hands down, in the early 80's this was my fave band. As a scrappy youngster I saw alot of bands in NYC, but their gig at The Peppermint Lounge is still my favorite. We waited forever for them to go on (bands went on so late back then!)and when they finally did, I was glued to the edge of the stage, entranced as only a 16 year old rocker can be. I loved them, I still can listen to the songs. AHHH, I feel old, what a great era of music.

  • cool....loved this band

  • Nice to see it! Since 1981, when I saw them on stage in London, I was looking for some images of the Au Pairs. Thanks a lot!

  • I love au pairs and someone could tell me if have any video version from any song from the album playing with a different sex?????? hugs from Brazil to y'all

  • Thanks for putting this on.that's me bashing the skins at the back and if anyone has any other footage please let me know so i can sort out our a web site..PETE H.

  • You're very welcome. I luckily ran across this movie. Someone was nice enough to digitize it. When you get a website sorted, let me know, as I would love to see it. This was always one of my favorites from Urgh.

  • what is the web site address

  • Hi there. Thanks for question.sorry for delay i was bieng held captive in a cornish fishing village(re.THE WICKER MAN).I am still trying to sort it out so at the moment i can't give you the info. The web address i wanted has already been taken. Will let you know as soon as it gets up and running.cheers Pete Hammond.

  • One of the best tunes from Urgh...Thanks for this post!

  • is there more from this band, please tell me

  • always just loved this track and so good to see the live performance

  • Fantastic!

    'Playing with a different Sex'

  • I know! The one on the cassette I had when I was a kid was introduced with, "This is a song about faking orgasms, it's called 'Come Again'."

  • Cool 'Introduction' ;-)
