In the scene where the F-14s are dogfighting the Zeros and Kirk Douglas has cleared them in to fire on the Zeros..."You're cleared to arm. SPLASH the Zeros. I say again, SPLASH the zeros." And the Tomcats go into afterburner while sweeping their wings. The audience stood up at their seats and roared with approval. It was one of the most amazing reactions I've ever seen in a movie audience.

Out of all the planes I have seen at an air show I hope to someday see the beautiful f-14 tomcat. It has to be the sweetest bird that could have ever flown in the sky it is truly amazing.
@hage28 The Tomcat is one of the most inspiring military jets ever to serve in the armed forces. Unfortunately, as the plane has been retired from service, it is very unlikely you will see one at an airshow. The good news is that you can find them in museums and on display at some Naval Airbases like Oceana in Norfolk, VA.
@JetMechMA there is several reason for this, #1 for the balance of the airplane, it was meant to fly with a 2 man crew, if a RIO is not there then approximately the same amount of weigh needs to be back there. #2 flying the tomcat was a 2 person operation, there are a lot of items in the rear cockpit that have to be operated from the back seat, and can not be operated from the front, in short, it is a team, not an individual, it takes teamwork to fly this plane, but it worked very very well.
It obvious that high tech is taking over which is bad because it will end it killing ourselves the f18 is a jet future pilots don't dream of.. The f14 is the most beautiful jet in my opinion ever and I was told you can really feel the speed when you accelerate unlike the f18..

Of all US jetfighters past and present I would say the Tomcat is definately the most sexiest. But jetfighters aren't meant to be 'sexy', but to fulfill their tactical jobs...
@Change6609 Yes but the Tomcat is a much better plane than the replacement Hornet. Only reason it was retired was because Cheney doesn't like Grumman.
The early models of the F-14 never lived up to expectations due to the TF-30 engines. Also, with the collapse of the Soviet Union the Fleet Defender mission went away and with it the logic being the AIM-54 (which was not as effective against fighters as it would have been against Soviet Backfires and Blackjacks).
That left the F-14 an expensive system in need of major updates (the A+ and the D), when money was running short.
I still love this plane and if I had an air force or a navy this would be in it.. But its turn rate and roll rate take an eternity so you can see it why it was withdrawn. ..And with the conflicts ongoing the F/A-18 Super Hornet can do all and more.
@mustanglead spoken just like someone that don't have a clue as to what he is talking about, the hornet very rarely could beat the tomcat in ACM, the hornet does not have the legs thet tomcat had, the hornet cant carry the weight the tomcat could, the hornet can't even carry enough fuel for itself, it is a joke to think they can fulfill the role of air refueling for other hornets that also cant carry enough fuel for themselves, the hornet is a good utility plane.

I wish the Navy never got rid of the F-14. I want to be a fighter pilot in the navy and I would dream of flying the Tomcat when I was little. Now though I have the choice of F/A-18E/F Super Hornet or the F-35C Lighting II
@MrZw69 It's not in production, R&D funding was cancelled and Congress told Boeing that no F-35s will be purchased due to increasing F-22 costs, much higher than Boeing promised in the 2-for-1 arrangement. The F-35 has joined the YF-23.
@ClarinetGuru I don't know where you're getting your info from. The F-35 is so far doing fine the USAF and the USN models are going along as planned. It's the USMC model that is way behind because Lockheed had to redesign it because it was overweight.
@ClarinetGuru You are 100% incorrect. The F-35 program is over-budget and behind schedule, but is still active. My brother worked on the program until last year. Congress has canceled production of the F-22 Raptor because of its purchase cost, limited role, higher maintanance cost and because of its dominance as an interceptor. Although the F-22 is a higher-performance aircraft and has been fitted with bombs, the F-35 will be less expensive and fill more roles. It's coming in 5-10 years.

I just spoke with someone last week that said a former U.S. Marine Harrier pilot friend of his is currently in a F-35 squadron----------------with NO PLANES. If you can provide any conclusive evidence of there being active F-35 squadrons WITH PLANES, I will stand corrected. Good luck with that.
@MrZw69 sorry that your choices are so limited, given those options, i would choose neither one of them, when the awesome tomcat was retired, i retired right after it was retired, for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons, was that i refuse to fly the hornet into combat.
@TheScrumpty got to work with the options I have. I agree if I was in the navy at the time the F-14 was retired I would've got out too. On the other hand the super hornet and F-35 are good fighters, got to live with changes.
@MrZw69 the superhornet is way inadequate for what it is being expected to do, i would never trust flying one in combat, which is why i ultimately made my decision to retire instead of staying in the navy, and i doubt that the f-35 will be any better than superhornet with the exception of greatly improved stealth, and better electronics, but doubtful it will be any better performance wise.
I love the bow at the end. That was cool. I'll never forget this plane. Hopefully soon they wil restore them for airshows, Tomcat's are too special to just sit and collect dust.

They are both awesome machines, but they are completely different machines. The F-111 is a light fighter/bomber (hence the F-1XX designation), whilst the F-14 is a air superiority fighter.
@rennieallen yeah, the F-111 was deemed too heavy for carrier op's, so it was abandoned, then Grummen ran with the swing wings and came up with the F14..both have awesome presence
I wish I could have seen her fly in real life. This will always be the airplane that changed my life. This plane gave me the wings to fly. When the government retired it, my heart broke in two. One day I would like to see one restored to flying status and grace the skis of USA once again.

Look at the underside of the F-14. And then look at the MiG-29's & Su-27's underside. It's obvious how the Russians copied this fighter. The space between the engines, that on the F-14 had the role 4 extra lift 2 take off from the carriers but also aides in climbing, was another feature borrowed from the F-14 & incorporated on the Su-27 & MiG-29. The LERX were borrowed from the F-16. Only a very biased person wouldn't recognize this.
A truly beautiful aircraft. Too bad they replaced it with the Super Hornet. That thing simply can't protect the carriers as it is supposed to. Now, the USN has no proper fighter for a proper fleet defense. Replacing the Tomcat with the Super Hornet, was one of the biggest mistakes the US politicians ever made. I don't know, it's like they're being payed by the Russians to get rid of the US military's most powerful weapons systems...

@1bearcatf8f The F-22 is not good enough, my friend. In my opinion, it was the second best choice. The YF-23 was better from more aspects. Much bigger range, faster, more stealthy, better basic agility (no TVC), better aerodynamics, much better thrust/weight ratio. The F-22 only has better low speed maneuverability than the YF-23, but that's only when it's using its TVC. Other than that, the YF-23 beats the F-22 in all the other areas.

As 4 F-35 & F-22, my opinion is that neither of them should've been selected. Northrop had their own JSF design proposal, it was based on the YF-23, but they didn't even get the chance 2 build a prototype. Northrop's designs were better.

@1bearcatf8f Yah the F14 was designed for long range fleet defense against swarms of Soviet bombers hence why it entered service with the AWG-9 radar and 120 mile range AGM-54. The F18 was designed to be a much more versatile fighter and is more akin to a fighter bomber.

When its wings are fully swept forward, the F-14 is very agile at low speeds. It was not designed more for interception, it was designed as both interceptor and fighter. Go learn its history.

How good is my understand of an article from wikipedia regarding this fearful aircraft? Correct me if I am wrong PLEASE.
Says there that this was the ONLY fighter plane of having carried the Phoenix missiles -- capable of being shot at MULTIPLE targets at the SAME TIME?
If this was the case and assuming stealth technology was never known, then, could the Tomcat ALONG with the Phoenix missile is still the deadliest combination ever known to air superiority history?

In the scene where the F-14s are dogfighting the Zeros and Kirk Douglas has cleared them in to fire on the Zeros..."You're cleared to arm. SPLASH the Zeros. I say again, SPLASH the zeros." And the Tomcats go into afterburner while sweeping their wings. The audience stood up at their seats and roared with approval. It was one of the most amazing reactions I've ever seen in a movie audience.

Out of all the planes I have seen at an air show I hope to someday see the beautiful f-14 tomcat. It has to be the sweetest bird that could have ever flown in the sky it is truly amazing.

@hage28 The Tomcat is one of the most inspiring military jets ever to serve in the armed forces. Unfortunately, as the plane has been retired from service, it is very unlikely you will see one at an airshow. The good news is that you can find them in museums and on display at some Naval Airbases like Oceana in Norfolk, VA.

@JetMechMA there is several reason for this, #1 for the balance of the airplane, it was meant to fly with a 2 man crew, if a RIO is not there then approximately the same amount of weigh needs to be back there. #2 flying the tomcat was a 2 person operation, there are a lot of items in the rear cockpit that have to be operated from the back seat, and can not be operated from the front, in short, it is a team, not an individual, it takes teamwork to fly this plane, but it worked very very well.

It obvious that high tech is taking over which is bad because it will end it killing ourselves the f18 is a jet future pilots don't dream of.. The f14 is the most beautiful jet in my opinion ever and I was told you can really feel the speed when you accelerate unlike the f18..

I'm just curious if someone can properly illustrate in an un-biased way, why the Superhornet is so inferior? And if that be the case why aren't you guys in charge of fleet operations. And better yet, what kind of pilot turns down a job because a plane got retired. Isn't danger part of the appeal? Just trying to understand.

Yes and no.
The early models of the F-14 never lived up to expectations due to the TF-30 engines. Also, with the collapse of the Soviet Union the Fleet Defender mission went away and with it the logic being the AIM-54 (which was not as effective against fighters as it would have been against Soviet Backfires and Blackjacks).
That left the F-14 an expensive system in need of major updates (the A+ and the D), when money was running short.

I still love this plane and if I had an air force or a navy this would be in it.. But its turn rate and roll rate take an eternity so you can see it why it was withdrawn. ..And with the conflicts ongoing the F/A-18 Super Hornet can do all and more.

@mustanglead spoken just like someone that don't have a clue as to what he is talking about, the hornet very rarely could beat the tomcat in ACM, the hornet does not have the legs thet tomcat had, the hornet cant carry the weight the tomcat could, the hornet can't even carry enough fuel for itself, it is a joke to think they can fulfill the role of air refueling for other hornets that also cant carry enough fuel for themselves, the hornet is a good utility plane.

I wish the Navy never got rid of the F-14. I want to be a fighter pilot in the navy and I would dream of flying the Tomcat when I was little. Now though I have the choice of F/A-18E/F Super Hornet or the F-35C Lighting II

@MrZw69 It's not in production, R&D funding was cancelled and Congress told Boeing that no F-35s will be purchased due to increasing F-22 costs, much higher than Boeing promised in the 2-for-1 arrangement. The F-35 has joined the YF-23.

@ClarinetGuru I don't know where you're getting your info from. The F-35 is so far doing fine the USAF and the USN models are going along as planned. It's the USMC model that is way behind because Lockheed had to redesign it because it was overweight.

@ClarinetGuru You are 100% incorrect. The F-35 program is over-budget and behind schedule, but is still active. My brother worked on the program until last year. Congress has canceled production of the F-22 Raptor because of its purchase cost, limited role, higher maintanance cost and because of its dominance as an interceptor. Although the F-22 is a higher-performance aircraft and has been fitted with bombs, the F-35 will be less expensive and fill more roles. It's coming in 5-10 years.

I just spoke with someone last week that said a former U.S. Marine Harrier pilot friend of his is currently in a F-35 squadron----------------with NO PLANES. If you can provide any conclusive evidence of there being active F-35 squadrons WITH PLANES, I will stand corrected. Good luck with that.

@MrZw69 sorry that your choices are so limited, given those options, i would choose neither one of them, when the awesome tomcat was retired, i retired right after it was retired, for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons, was that i refuse to fly the hornet into combat.

@MrZw69 the superhornet is way inadequate for what it is being expected to do, i would never trust flying one in combat, which is why i ultimately made my decision to retire instead of staying in the navy, and i doubt that the f-35 will be any better than superhornet with the exception of greatly improved stealth, and better electronics, but doubtful it will be any better performance wise.

Hellfire thrash! I remember watching these at the shows at RAF Alconbury back in 80's. As I was a kid the roar from those engines made my ears felt like they were going to explode! But great legends those Aircrafts were. I hope some were preserved in the UK as well as the USA.

As capable as they, it's hard to justify the continued existence of such costly beast when the big scary Bear is no longer the threat it used to be.

Look at the underside of the F-14. And then look at the MiG-29's & Su-27's underside. It's obvious how the Russians copied this fighter. The space between the engines, that on the F-14 had the role 4 extra lift 2 take off from the carriers but also aides in climbing, was another feature borrowed from the F-14 & incorporated on the Su-27 & MiG-29. The LERX were borrowed from the F-16. Only a very biased person wouldn't recognize this.

A truly beautiful aircraft. Too bad they replaced it with the Super Hornet. That thing simply can't protect the carriers as it is supposed to. Now, the USN has no proper fighter for a proper fleet defense. Replacing the Tomcat with the Super Hornet, was one of the biggest mistakes the US politicians ever made. I don't know, it's like they're being payed by the Russians to get rid of the US military's most powerful weapons systems...

@StiviGun1 Ok can you minimize the number of replys to like 2 or 1 please my email is getting crowded with stuff.But the F-15s wings bend down there not out straight,they swoop down a bit that gives it its lift and agility.Same with the F-22,The F-22 was more designed around the F-15 just with some major modifacations.And the F-22s TVC nozzels are the only specific type that works on the F-22,No other TVC nozzel could work on it,Unless you disrupt the stealth then yes.Im just gonna stop this.

@1bearcatf8f The F-22 is not good enough, my friend. In my opinion, it was the second best choice. The YF-23 was better from more aspects. Much bigger range, faster, more stealthy, better basic agility (no TVC), better aerodynamics, much better thrust/weight ratio. The F-22 only has better low speed maneuverability than the YF-23, but that's only when it's using its TVC. Other than that, the YF-23 beats the F-22 in all the other areas.

As 4 F-35 & F-22, my opinion is that neither of them should've been selected. Northrop had their own JSF design proposal, it was based on the YF-23, but they didn't even get the chance 2 build a prototype. Northrop's designs were better.

Its RAMs, since it cut the air more effectively, it had much better aerodynamics than the F-22, were far less subjected 2 heat than the F-22's RAMs. The F-22's high maintenance cost is in a very big part due to its RAMs pealing off 2 quickly. Aside from low speed maneuverability, the F-22 has nothing on the YF-23. & u're talking to a guy who, not so long ago, was a big fan of the F-22. Until I started doing a little research that opened my eyes.

@StiviGun1 In terms of best close range air to air the F-18 is better,The F-14 was more suited for long range carrier interception from soviet fighters,bombers etc.

@1bearcatf8f Yah the F14 was designed for long range fleet defense against swarms of Soviet bombers hence why it entered service with the AWG-9 radar and 120 mile range AGM-54. The F18 was designed to be a much more versatile fighter and is more akin to a fighter bomber.

@Jospehporta Yeah the A model was designed for long range air to air,the B model( bombcat) was designed for air to ground/Air to air threats.While the D model(Super tomcat) Was designed for long range interception/Air to ground and air to air..The F-18 was designed to tackle all these roles.

@Jospehporta As usual, u don't know shit. The F-14 was proposed 2 be modified in several Super Hornet variants, that would've all featured excellent ground attack capabilities. The F-18 has nothing on the F-14, only disadvantages.

@1bearcatf8f Ask any pilot that flew the F-14 against the F-18 and he'll tell you that the F-18 has nothing on the F-14 in close fighting combat. When its wings are fully swept forward, the F-14 is very agile at low speeds. It was not designed more for interception, it was designed as both interceptor and fighter. Go learn its history.
