Shalamar became popular band in the mid 70's. Funk goes back to the 60's. James Brown is considered the founder of funk; but even he credits Little Richard for creating funk back in the mid 50's. Sly Stone, Isley Brothers, Jimmy Hendrix, Parliment/Funkadelic, KC & The Sunshine Band, Dazz Band, Confunktion, People's Choice, Slave, & The Ohio Players come to mind. These just scratch the surface of funk bands. It's great that there are sites and people to help the memories remain.
Shalamar was the real music in the 80s. I was in Eastern Europe then and communist Bulgaria. We still danced to Shalama at parties. Thank you for posting these songs. They bring back old memories.
@interlake1234567 u r soooo rite!! only if only i wuz born bak then i would b jammin all night long!! but i would want to b born in the late 60s so i couldve been a teen in the 80s!! that wouldve been fun :)
Had this tape bought for me as a Christmas Gift back in 82. I was 11 at the time and brought up on this kinda music from my Mum. I literally PLAYED THIS TAPE TO DEATH!!!!! and listening to this song, I even remembered some of the lyrics and it took me back to that time when I sang to every song on it. I remember looking at the front cover of this back then and thinking how COOL they looked.
Jody's voice was SOOO SWWWEEEETTTT. Great nostalgic memories!!!!!!!!
Howard Hewett poses here with a bass, nad he could really play it for real(as well as drums and other instruments) , and Jeffrey Daniels, with his "Flying-V" guitar, could also play the guitar for real
@therealsoulproduct - Agree. '82 and maybe '83 were the last of the great years for R&B music. Somebody took away the strings and horns and too many slow songs would dominate in the late '80's. Leon Sylvers had a great trio in Shalamar.
@ziggy08080 Kind of the transition period where a different, definitely much younger, demographic from an unlikely location: South Bronx would herald the new sound....'nothing stays the same'....
Yes that's Jody with her hair wet. That was 1982. She was showing her pretty legs. That was one of their best albums. They were contributing more of their producing and writing talents.
You know when they made GTA Vice City they should have just put this album on a loop for the entire game! It is so 80's cool that its still unknown!

brings tears to my eyes. These days were too great to be duplicated! if you grew up during the 80s we were truly lucky. <3

You could not be more correct about that, the late 70's and early 80's were the best times ever and will never be duplicated.

"Friends" is definitely the best album by the Watley/Hewett/Daniel version of Shalamar.
