i have a question if a plainswalker is killed i have a card called reclaim and that lets me put a card from the graveyard on top of my deck would that still work or no
@ThePokeletsplay yes. Reclaim is good for that. You can also Regrowth it (a dollar bin card from Fourth Edition) , for 1 and G to return any card from your gyard to your hand.
@CeeEmmz You aren't restricted to playing just one, or two colours. You can play all five, if you'd like. There are actually cards that benefit from that, with sunburst abilities.
Some of the rules seems like bull, non-combat damage can't target plainswalker but through some creative reimagineering bi-laws it actually turns out that it can actually do so. Why even state that it can't target plainswalkers in the first place.
@ScriosV Confiscate. It's no longer legal in standard or extended but Volition Reins does the same thing for the converted mana cost PLUS you get to untap the permanent.
@CookieNinjaen I think its about order and response. If a card just says it targets a player, then he is targeting the player first so the affected player can activate a card that would lessen damage dealt (to a player), even if the effect redirects to the planeswalker. If a card says player or planeswalker the affected player can't activate a card that would lessen damage (to a player), since the player was never targeted to begin with (if you choose planeswalker).
@LordToon No, Quicksilver Amulet only works for Creature types. A spell that says you can put a permanent on the battlefield can be used with a planeswalker, though.
I'm a new player and am uncertain about creature effects. I know you can't use tapping abilities when a creature has summoning sickness, but what about abilities that just cost mana? Also can you play a creature's ablility , tapping or non-tapping, like an instant, or does it have to be on your turn? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@TheRobot452 A creature with summoning sickness cannot use abilities. It can only block on the opponent's next turn. And the abilities are played like a sorcery, not an instant, so you can only play them on your turn.
@Reptiledictionary225 You can get a Deck Builder's kit if you like the idea of creating your own deck. I got one for 25 dollars at Walmart, and it comes with 100 land, 4 booster packs (15 cards each), and 125 cards of all colors and type. That's almost 300 cards, and is a good base to start almost any kind of deck you want. Or you can get a "Fat Pack" like the 2012 Core Set. It is around 40-50 dollars, which comes with 80 land and 9 booster packs.
@Reptiledictionary225 Get either the Core Set or the Deck builder's kit, and supplement with buying singles or booster packs if you want. Generally, the Intro packs aren't that great, but they are the fastest and least expensive way to start playing MTG.
lava axe says 5 damage to target player, you can re direct the damage from the player to the planeswalker. this works with any spell that deals damage to target player such as lightning bolt or shock... but if it says damage to target creature that can not be redirected to a planeswalker... hope I helped
@mythicsoupX I'm new to the game and was about to ask what the difference between redirecting and just targeting would be, but I saw your post and it makes sense.
Can you play a planeswalkers + ability even if it cant resolve it? For example if a planeswalker says: (+2) Untap 2 lands,, and I use that (+2) ability even though you don't have 2 lands to untap? I mean do I get any loyalty counters?
@12eyseandahalf Yes, for example if you use Lilliana's (+1 'Target player discards a card') Even if the target player has no cards in hand then she still gains one loyalty counter.
Im new to the game, but it seems to me that you need to get your mana and monsters on the feild, It just seems odd to teach me while you only have a Planeswalker out, its a bad move to me it seems to me but im a neeeeeeeewb x)
@94micke It's easier if you think of a planeswalker as another player. That's what I do. Any effect that target another player can target a planeswalker, but an effect that targets creatures can't target planeswalkers.
@Raskian Planeswalkers can't be targeted by anything that targets a player or creature since they are neither, but I'm pretty sure you can redirect damage to you as the player, to your planeswalker. I think.
I'd like to state, just because I see people say this a lot, that Planeswalkers do not die. When you remove all of a planeswalkers loyalty counters, they are put into the graveyard, but not because they die. It's because they planeswalk out of the fight because they are no longer loyal to you. This could be because they received serious injuries and must attend to them or because they used up a great deal of energy, using their ultimate most likely, and must rest or gather more(mana).
question: what happens when u have a Nicol Bolas, then cast Tezzert: Agent of Bolas. Do they both get removed from the game (because they're both a "Bolas")?
@SlowDaddie No. Nicol Bolas is the planeswalker, Nicol Bolas; Whereas Tezzeret, while being his agent, is Tezzeret. That effect only applies if the two planeswalkers are the same person. So, a Jace the mind sculptor is the same as a jace beleren.
@topituulensuu I'm sorry but you completely misread the situation. I was answering a question for someone else who asked "How did he deal damage with Lava Axe to Bolas if it deals damage to player" and I was explaining it. I'm well aware you have the choice but to deal damage to Bolas, it must be redirected
I'm glad I learned about planeswalkers before actually getting into the game as it saved me from confusion that I might of have if I already knew the game rules
I understand damage being dealt to a Planeswalker results in losing that many loyalty counters. But how did Lava Axe even affect the planes walker? "...5 damage to target Player". This video has confused me.
@tubewindle Plainswalkers count as another Player on the field. They can only be removed via exile or killing them by attacking directly/points damaged via spell card. If you get through and attack a player they can use that chance to transfer damage they were going to take to their planeswalker.
@tubewindle Think of each planeswalker as another person setting next to you. The opponent either attacks you or the planeswalker, but not both. Since the person in this video didn't have anything to block for Nicol Bolas, he got hit with the lava ax.
@tubewindle Lava axe dealt its 5 damage to the Planeswalker only if its resolving damage targets a player. For instance lets say you have a Jace the mind sculptor in play and I target you with Lave axe, if you cannot counter and would take the 5 damage from Lava Axe you may instead have those 5 damage dealt to your Planeswalker in the form of loyalty counters. If this drops the Planeswalkers loyalty counters to 0 or lower it is then put into your graveyard! I hope this helps you!
@tubewindle A planswalker is a player. When you are playing Magic, you personally are called a "planeswalker." So if a card says that a player is delt such and such damage, you can make that damage hit the planeswalker because players are planeswalkers. I hope that cleared it up. =)
@tubewindle Okay, the lava axe is targeting YOU (the player) when it is on the stack. If you can play anything (like Bandage) to prevent damage to YOU (the player), then you can. Once the stack resolves and the spell is successful, then your OPPONENT (who threw the lava axe) decides if it hit YOU (the player) or Nicol (the planeswalker). The same is true basically with attacking and blocking. You can attack TOWARD the planes walker (through any blocking creatures) but you cant attack it directly
@tubewindle because a Planeswalker counts as a Player not a Creature. Lava Axe does damage to target player, so he can choose to target his opponent or his Planeswalker. =)
@nikolakistdglover I dont think they explained that very well. And for me, I might have taken the 5 damage depending on how many counters the planeswalker had.
@tubewindle i know they didn't and it's not your choice whether the planeswalker takes the damage or you it's the one casting the spell that chooses :(
@tubewindle Any spell or ability that refers to the player can also be used against a planeswalker, even if the card's print existed before planeswalkers did. It's in the comprehensive rules, read up on 'em. :)
what about if you have a card like leyline of anticipation. It says, "You may cast nonland cards as though they had flash. (You may cast them any time you could cast an instant" does that mean you could use a planeswalkers ability during your opponents turn since the abilities count as sorceries and those are nonland.
@piplup10203854 No, because they're not a card. They don't count as sorceries, it's just you can only play them when you could cast one, i.e., during your main phase when the stack is empty. If it said "you may cast nonland cards and activate abilities of permanents you control as though they had flash", then yeah. But as it is, it's only actual cards.
@EvilJaime 'Exiling' a card is essentially putting it into a second, different graveyard.
Put short, when your card is sent to your graveyard, you can't get it back unless you cast a spell that tells you to bring things back from your graveyard. When a card is sent into exile, you can't get it back unless you cast a spell that tells you to bring a card out of exile.

i thought planeswalkers are only in the lorwyn edition ? i was going to buy some conflux-boosterpacks. good to know there are also planeswalkers in conflux :)
Just an observation, from the few shows I've seen, the presenter has a tendency to, for a lack of better words, "wiggle" his shoulders every time he finishes a segment.
well i don(t really like em .. there to good , hard to play though but basicly , they are to good , and to my opinion they don't really fitt in wiht the magic cards, they look more like those stupid lord of the rings cards (anyone?) no me ? i love some of the changes they made to make it easyer to understand (such as battlefield) but planeswalkers ??? wtf whe im playing I am the plainswalker , i can do the job alone :D ^^ anyway that's just my opinion
The damage redirection from spells is silly. You can't damage the planeswalker directly with damage spells, but you can attack the player and then "redirect" them to the planeswalker.
3:15
did they just Lava Axe a planeswalker ? I'm pretty sure Lava Axe can only target players.

metalforlife95 1 year ago
@metalforlife95 All Planeswalkers are Mythics, even the ones from Llowyn
PsionicMonk 1 year ago
@PsionicMonk Not true, the Lorwyn planeswalkers are rare. Get your facts right, nubz.
gonexhaywire 1 year ago
@gonexhaywire They're printed as Rare, but Mythic didn't exist back then, they've been re-printed and are all considered mythics

ichundichundduunder 1 year ago
You can't get a planeswalker in booster packs. But you can in decks.
jetjet5 1 year ago
@jetjet5 wrong i got jace the mindsculptor in my second pack
kris198921 1 year ago
@jetjet5 false. you mainly get them in boosters. And the only pre-constructed decks you can find them in are in the duelers decks..

I hate when its obvious people are reading what they say off the screen.

Great show folks~!
Just an observation, from the few shows I've seen, the presenter has a tendency to, for a lack of better words, "wiggle" his shoulders every time he finishes a segment.
Anyone else notice? Look at older shows too.

I REALLY need to find elspeth...

Ok, I'm new too magic the gathering....but, which type of card can you play at anytime? Was it enchantment or instant?
pokemaniac121 2 years ago
Those would be instants.
elrunate 2 years ago
Instants :P.
kickedrs 2 years ago
Does enchantment sound like you can play it anytime rather than instant?

Can you use life gain spell on Planeswalkers?
Clankiller079 2 years ago
No.
People would just pour sackful of loyalty counters on them with wardens and whatnot.
Tokeijikaku 2 years ago
Thank you.
Clankiller079 2 years ago
Lol why'd he flick the loyalty counter at the end? =P

I was thinking of getting a Jace Beleren togo into my Presence of Mind deck, more unsummons could be veerryy useful.
No damage at all...
BrownieTheOne 2 years ago
so...you can ativiate its abilities only after you play a sorcery? or does that mean only in the main phases of your turn?
Dizdeez13 2 years ago
Only during your main phase, when there's nothing on the stack.

good weapon for planeswalkers is blighning.
3 damage to him and controller discards =).
fousek1000 2 years ago
well i don(t really like em .. there to good , hard to play though but basicly , they are to good , and to my opinion they don't really fitt in wiht the magic cards, they look more like those stupid lord of the rings cards (anyone?) no me ? i love some of the changes they made to make it easyer to understand (such as battlefield) but planeswalkers ??? wtf whe im playing I am the plainswalker , i can do the job alone :D ^^ anyway that's just my opinion

The damage redirection from spells is silly. You can't damage the planeswalker directly with damage spells, but you can attack the player and then "redirect" them to the planeswalker.
Silly.
Mulldarran 2 years ago
it's kind of confusing, and redundant IMO.
MeatFilledPastry 2 years ago
you CAN do damage with a damage spell :)
