  • i think as far as movie Johanna is concerned they were trying to portray the delicate, innocent side of her. because after all Johanna is only 15 at the time and there's not as much room to deviate from the age as an actress as there is in a stage musical where the actress can be much older, and has to be due to the law restrictions on minors in the theatre. i know age is not everything but a theatre Johanna would be more experienced than movie Johanna so i don't think it's fair to compare them.

  • I agree! Her voice was just too cutesy for this song! She's adorable and pretty but that doesn't make her a great singer.

  • Beautiful... I've just recorded this would love peoples opinions on my channel

  • You don't get it, man. Johanna in the movie didn't suck. She too is a Broadway singer. It's just that the movie is not operatic so she has to adopt in the movie type of singing. She really has a beautiful voice so suck it.

The girl in this movie was also good. And operatic voice is required in this show. therefore, she has to do it that way.

  • I try to bear in mind, she is the daughter of Sweeney. I think this, out of many versions, is the most accurate of what I believe Johanna should be. Many different interpretations, but that's the beauty of theatre!

  • This makes me sad that I didn't get to play Johanna instead of Lucy this Halloween...they were going to do this scene just like the revival and I can play the cello...my vocal teacher had even worked with me on this arrangement of the song and was surprised I didn't get the part, but Lucy is a great character to play as well!

  • this is..decent I guess

  • She really does have a beautiful voice and I only thought that Sarah Rice did a good job.

  • Just because she was told to sing a fragile version that doesn't have strong Vibratos like this nor she top this version so she sucks?

Oh well, i guess you're right since you're such a matured person.

Ps. I like this version better =P

  • You're being a little harsh on the girl from the movie. It's unfair to compare the two; Lauren Molina is older and has had more training. Jane Wisener was only 17 or 18, and for that age, she was very good. She had a very pure, undeveloped voice, which was what the director was looking for--he wanted his "Johanna" to sound like the 15-year-old that she was. I've heard some gawdawful "broadway" Johannas--click on "garotabluejean"s "Green Finch" video if you dont believe me!

  • I literally screamed out 'YES, THANK YOU' when I read your comment about how the movie Johanna sucks. Imo Sarah Rice (OBC) is the best, but anything is better than Jayne Wisener.

  • Loved this when I heard her do it live in the 2006 revival which I saw 3 times because it was that good and way better than any other rendering of Sweeney I have seen (including the film) due to both the excellent performances of the cast and the reduced scoring which gave it a raw, thin, intimate and eerie edge. The film is a good film, but a lot was lost in the editing re: the character development of the lesser characters (esp Johanna) vs the stage play, so for me, not as effective.

  • i think johanna is a very tender character and the actress in the movie sings like this... this Johanna sings too lively. after all johanna is caught in her room for years, unlucky and hopeless. so the johanna from the movie is more convincing.

    but both sing beautifully.

  • Personally i think the Johannah from the film is better :)

  • THIS is how Johanna should sound!

  • isnt she fabulous

  • this is freaking fantastic!!! i give this girl so much props and respect..... to sing so perfectly and play such a hard instrument like the cello all at once.... my god!

  • This is the best Johanna I have heard. Ever. Her voice combines the crazy vibrato from the play and the super thin voice from the movie, and it's perfect for the character.

  • I hated the movie version. To be honest I didnt really like the revival of Sweeney either but I did like her better than the original Johanna.

  • I didn't think Jayne Wisener was that good either. Her voice was quite weak, her high notes weren't secure and she's a mezzo. It seemed like they transposed the song down for her, and I really hate that they cut Johanna's role so much (even though I love the movie on the whole).

And the original cast Johanna was cringey. Lauren is easily the best!

  • I agree that this girl is very good - probably the best. her voice is beautiful. That said I think it is wrong of you to say the other girl 'sucks'. It is one thing to be critical it is another to be nasty about another actor's performance. The girl in the film was right for the tone it set - it wasn't supposed to be operatic and it showed a fragile side of a trapped girl. I think it is wrong for you to say she "sucked".

  • I also was quite happy with the Johanna in the movie...An unusual voice because it was so thin but it did reflect her innocence. In terms of quality of singing from the leads in the movie, best to worst I would go

    Tobias

    Anthony

    Pirelli

    Turpin

    Sweeney

    Lovett

Check out the singing in "Hydrofoil - The Musical" Not too shabby.

  • i like the one from the movie better no offence

  • @squidjigsinc we are not offended or taking your comment seriously since you cant even spell offense

  • She does a tremendous job. The role of Johanna is extremely difficult to sing. Too often directors are trying have actresses singing out of their range and the part can be very difficult to listen to. She's got the range just right.

  • i agree with speedingclock although i do enjoy this version exponentially better

  • I don't think we should attack another performer, simply praise this one. I personnally think both this Johanna and the one in the movie are fabulous.

  • performers put themselves out there. They should be prepared to be attacked and criticized. The girl from the movie couldn't sin the part well. Not many people can. Sondheim is too difficult if you aren't a very advanced performer.

  • You'd think that a major motion picture could select a decent actress who can also sing the part.

  • @iloveAmneris There's no way to compare the girl in the movie to the girl on bway. bway is always classically trained and better (99.99999% of the time). And I think classically trained ears can hear it easily. But MOST of the time, the average listener just likes what they hear first.

But honestly, this Lauren Molina blows it outta the water. She's literally perfect on stage too.

  • @iloveAmneris Agreed. The people in the movie did not do justice to this fantastic musical.

  • @iloveAmneris You are right. compared to this revival, the movie was god-awful. This cast was so so talented.

  • I agree the girl from the movie is fantastic !! but so is this one

  • defines this

  • That's got to be my fave musical ever.

  • I saw the revival while it was in West Palm Beach. The entire cast was amazing. Lauren was so great as Johanna it was scary. :)

  • Just heads up to anyone watching this Lauren is now starring in Rock of Ages and is phenomenal!

  • I love what I've heard of the revival (I can't listen to too much of Sweeney because it gives me nightmares XD) and this is no exception - this song is so difficult to sing, and to be singing it WHILE playing the cello? Brava! :D

  • i was lucky to see this revival 3 times-once from the front row. The epitome of professional musicianship, singing and acting. Scary great!!!

  • she is the best-making love to her cello while singing perfectly-what a professional

  • ummm yeah the movie in general sucks! i hate the movie but it is one of my favorite musicals. i have the dvd from the original broadway cast with angela lansbury and it is amazing. Lauren Molina is fabulous too though

  • I'm watching you.

  • yeah i like her better

  • I saw the revival when it opened in Lincoln, Nebraska, and i think all of the songs were well done. the way it was sung in the movie was too high pitched for me, that does not mean i didn't like it. I think she was a good singer but i like this version better.

  • and too, when u watch another version of the story, u should understand that the darkness of everything in the movie was burton's intention.

So, anyhow, she doesn't suck, the melody sounded great. And so what if she wouldn't last in the broadway show? It's not like she's even trying, she just did a movie, she's not a theatrical actress...

just 'cause lauren sings better then her doesn't mean she sucks... ¬¬ she sings well.

  • have you seen the play?

it is the exact same thing as the movie.

she is talking to a bird. So the vibratos killing the bird doesn't make sense.

but, it is still a musical. It is written by one of the most difficult composers out there. You need good vocals to pull that off, or don't sing his work. And most people in the movie pulled it off, enough. Joanna pulled it off...but she just isn't in my opinion the best choice.

  • And I understand the darkness, its just that the joanna really wasn't that dark, so that really doesn't make sense. if i complained about ms. lovett being dark(which i don't) then you could tell me I need to understand his point of view...

  • @iloveAmneris the vibrato isnt what kills the bird. The Beatle does. The directing in that show was what was so bad. I feel bad for the actors because they are subjected to criticism that should really be directed at Tim Burton

  • I'm sorry, I know Lauren is a terrific performer, but a movie is way different then a play. If the movie had the theatrical performance given by the broadway performers it would look stupid.

A play is a play, a movie is a movie.

In the movie is like she's talking to the bird, imagine those vibratos, almost killing the bird...

It just wouldn't look natural in that scene. So just cause she's new, and didn't show the range of her voice, doesn't mean she sucks. She sounded calm and relaxed.

  • I saw the play twice. I have no idea why they cast bad singers for the movie. The broadway version were all terrific singers and musicians.

  • I didn't think the one from the movie sucked...the music in the movie wasn't supposed to be as operatic.

She definitely didn't suck, she just showed the more fragile and innocent side of Johanna.

That's my opinion, and you don't have to agree; I'm just making a point.

But as for this Johanna...she's great :)

  • @broadwaylove52

I agree with everything you said =)

  • I loved Lauren!!! And I agree, maybe they should have had someone with a bit more vocal experience for the movie, because Sondheim is very, very tricky music to sing.

However, Sarah Rice (the original Johanna) remains my favourite Johanna.

  • I wouldn't say that the girl from the movie sucked, especially considering that she was an amatear(sp?) when it came to singing.

But when it comes to Broadway, they need someone who can sing without a mike up to their mouths and still be heard. And this girl is absoulutely amazing! And I'll be getting to see her tomorrow! ^o^

  • Yes, she is an amateur. But for Sondheim, you don't need an amateur, and if you get one, get one who knows what they are doing.

  • Well technically, Tim Burton was the one who picked her, and he did receive criticism for that decision. But in fact, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were both amateurs as well. It had nothing to do with Sondheim.

  • The music is Sondheim...I would never cast someone who didn't have a good proper voice for anything Sondheim. Which is why I dislike the movie. None of them have particularly good proper voices. (except Toby...I love that kid.)

  • She did not suck. The girl from the movie is best ever. Who are you kidding? Her and Jamie are the best Johanna and Anthony ever. She's beautiful, gorgeous singing voice, and so special. She's best. How dare you?

  • Because, she sucks. I will say it. I will not back down. Ask that girl if she can perform 8 times a week? live. She would probably last 3 weeks tops.(and by tops, she would be removed from the show for sucking so bad.) And the kid who played Anthony had a decent voice, but I would not say the best ever, because I personally don't like how dark he is in the movie...

  • I agree with you!

  • they couldve used Lauren for the movie, she looks young enough and sings way better than the other girl. i hate when people dont do movie adaptions right...
