I suppose it is fitting. It was because of Worf that Gowron became the leader of the empire, and thus it is because of Worf that Gowron lost that power.
@DanFrederiksen Then you missed the message of Star Trek all together. It showed a future with hundreds of races, all different. The Klingon's believe in honor and glory on the battlefield, but they are not perfect, just as we humans are not perfect. They developed on a world with predators we can not imagine, and thus there environment shaped what they became. The Klingon's represented that witch lingers inside us all, the will to fight and survive. The beast within us all.
2:10 can also describe our government today. No this is not an anti-Obama speech, it's the truth. Whether a Democrat or Repblican holds office, our system of democracy, freedom, and liberty, has become so corrupt that few can see how almost evil it has become. Our leaders have become so drunk off power and authority, they do whatever it takes to keep that intoxicating and addicting drug. I only wish it was possible and legal to change out the leadership of those we hold corrupt as Worf did.
First point: Gowron is installed as leader with Worf's help; Gowron is swiftly replaced by Worf.
Second point: When Worf stabs Gowron with what was left of the Bat'leth he wielded, those who are more gore-loving know that to ensure the death of Gowron, Worf would've slashed outwards after impaling him, disemboweling the bastard.
Wow, so Worf took out both Duras and Gowron- he likes to aim high doesn't he!
Gowron might have been a failure as a military leader and as Chancellor, but he was a warrior to the end and made Worf fight hard to win. His last words were classic.
What a bitch. Klingons are Klingons. The Government is just a structure. She just bashed a species of people. Traditions and rituals need to be somewhat fluidic but since reality is cyclical the basic concepts and tenets of culture, of life, cannot be changed. They will naturally reemerge.
I miss Star Trek SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH. It kept me going when I had no faith and strength to go on, and it continues to do so even if it exists only as a memory. Pericles said: "What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.". What star trek leaves behind is a legacy of hope, and that makes me feel...not alone.
@BonScottAC Geordi LaForge, B'lanna Torres, and in a humorous way Scotty are some of my main inspirations for going to school to be an engineer. The sheer bravery and moral up holdings of the icons in these shows are unmatched by what we are now. it potrays the future is such an amazing light that we can only dream and hope would ever come to fruition.
You never know what you're missin' 'till it's gone. After the a couple of seasons i stopped watching ds9,couldn't stand it.Then i just happened to catch most of the last season & was like YAHOO!!THIS IS WHAT THEY SHOULDA' BEEN DOIN' IN THE FIRST PLACE!I'm not buying series dvd, soon as i do,full episodes will be available free online somewhere, lol. But man!,i was MAD when gowron got killed! He was an AWSOME character, especially how quick he died after ALL the trash talking he did 'bout fighting, lol!
I thought that one of the coolest characters was Worf's brother "Kurn". It's too bad that Worf had to have Kurn's memory erased so that Kurn would no longer be suicidal because Gowron stripped him of his rights. Turns out it was for nothing! The writers should have had Kurn's memory restored somehow and had him join Martok. Kurn had a lot of potential and was written off too prematurely. There is a DS9 novel that supposedly cover's Kurn's life after DS9.
@ACLTony I disagree, Kurn seemed rather one note, annoying and hypocritical. He always said the same thing.
"I want to fight. The Federation is soft. Worf, you're soft. My loss of my finances and luxuries is because you are soft. I want to fight. The Federation is soft. etc."
@FaxModem1- I see your point but look how many bland characters developed into great ones! When starting out: Doc Bashir - arrogant/annoying. Rom-ignorant goofball/comic relief. Nog-inconsiderate immature brat, Martok-cold, humorless. Odo-interesting but single minded. Yet, ALL of these grew & became fan favorites! I just think that so much more could have been done with Kurn. Would have liked to have seen Worf's son join the Klingon military and wind up serving under Kurn. Good potential.
@ACLTony I doubt that, considering Worf and Kurn aren't like Martok, he joined as an enlisted and steadily rose the ranks over the decades. Worf and Kurn were born to privilege and had land, money, ships, and men in their name. Its why Kurn annoys me, he's a noblemen with all this power and luxury, and yet Worf worked his way up through Starfleet and he calls Worf soft.
@FaxModem1 - By Klingon cultural views, Worf would be seen as passive because he was raised in a human family. Of course any notion of soft disappears when he's challenged. Kurn was the typcial yuppy Klingon warrior: Loyal, proud, ready to exploit an enemy's weakness. My point was his harsh character had potential to grow, mature and change as the other characters mentioned did. Even Capt. Picard came across as a hardboiled stiff-neck in STNG year one. Over time he morphed into a cool hero.
@ACLTony With that argument, we should have had more episodes with the owner of the Klingon restaurant, he had potential too.Or how about a three episode arc about the Bajoran woman who sells Jaffi sticks on the Promenade, she has room to grow as well.
@FaxModem1 - Neither the Klingon restaurant owner nor the Bajoran Jaffi peddler had any relationship ties to any primary characters nor did their characters affect the story plots. Worf's life changed significantly due to Kurn. When Gowron's ship was attack by the Duras clan, it was Kurn and his group who came to the rescue and allied themselves with. Gowron. Result: Gowron restored the House of Mog. Kurn later became a high council member. Kurn was significant. The restauranteer was not.
@ACLTony Yeah, but I found the restaurant owner more entertaining. Also, we didn't resolve Mirror Kira's plot, and she was a much more major character than Kurn ever was.
@FaxModem1 OK, we can agree to disagree. No matter what, it seems that you won't find any redeeming qualities in the character, even though many ST-DS9 fans have uttered similar sentiments. I found out recently that Kurn's story does continue in a book/ novel where Worf is reunited with his brother on a Klingon mission. Kurn, of course has a new memory and identity. Apparently the writers did listen to the fans. I doubt the restaraunteer or Mirror Kira are in that novel. - Peace.
@ACLTony Sounds fine. I didn't like the way they ended his character either. One of the worst ways to end a character is having them brainwashed and not remembering their life or adventures. I just never found him entertaining and am glad that, if your sake if nothing else, they continues his story. I just never wanted to see it.
question why didn't starfleet consider it murder when worf killed gowron? and would sisko have been arrested too since he orderd worf to do it? this is so confusing
@kellyberry Internal Klingon matter. It's not the first time either, Worf also killed Duras in a similar fashion in TNG. He got a reprimand, nothing special.
Worf is so badass he only needs pieces of a broken bat'leth to kill! It is too bad the writers didn't do something bold and have Worf become leader of the Klingon Empire. But certainly, Martok was honorable enough to lead the Empire!
Another Worf victory with that trident thing. I'm sure all those people who wondered why he spent some much time in holodeck simulations arent questioning it now...
Hilarious how Worf assassinates two top Klingon leaders while in a Starfleet uniform (the second while under Federation/ Bajoran jurisdiction), yet his career continues apace. Martok must have put in a pretty good word for him after this shit.
An observation here, Worf remains calm, cool, and collected throughout this. Not to mention that Gowron underestimated Worf's expertise with the Bat'leth.
This is an awesome scene, but I sometimes think that it would have been better if Worf had become Chancellor. He'd arguably be more use to the Federation as Chancellor of the Klingons than as a Starfleet Officer. It's hard to imagine a better scenario for the Federation than the Leader of the Klingon Empire being a man with many connections to Earth and who had served in Starfleet. For the duration of Worf's reign, the Federation and the Klingon Empire would have great relations.
@CanadianHeMan To my understanding, he does become an ambassador at the end of DS9 to the Klingon Empire, a position I feel he's more than worthy for.
@roush26 Actually it's Vader. Worf's not saying "NO!", he's screaming the Klingon death chant, which is done when a Klingon warrior dies in honorable combat to warn those in Sto-Vo-Kor that a warrior is coming. Although Gowron had acted dishonorably, he died in honorable combat as a Klingon warrior and is thus given that the honor of the death chant, and is presumably destined for Sto-Vo-Kor.
And yes, I am aware of the fact that knowing this stuff makes me an irredeemable nerd.
@redsoxrok34 When you think about it, Worf gave Gowron the chance to salvage what was left of his honor. Also Worf and Gowron were friends at one time. Duras on the other hand was Worf's sworn enemy, and didn't get the same courtesy of the death howl.
Gowron showed himself to be a corrupt POS from the get-go when he tried to bribe Ambassador K'Ehleyr onboard the Enterprise D. Gowron got what he deserved.
god every time I see this man the thing that gets me is his eyes,,,whenever he gets excited about something they practically pop out of his head .. .. .. creeps me out lol
Fearing Martoks growing popularity at home, Gowron took personal control of the Klingon forces in the Dominion war, putting Martok in no win situations, and sacrificing the Klingon fleet in the process, to keep him from being a political threat. Foolish move, especially since Martok had no political ambitions whatsoever (he was the son of a common soldier and not born into the Noble Houses). That's why Worf killed him, to keep him from squandering their resources on his petty agenda.
The klingons were always my favorite race in Star Trek. As for the rest of the effete jack asses who pass them off as dumb barbarians, buy a cucumber and go fuck yourselves!
DS9 DESTROYED how Klingons were portrayed. Worst limp-wristed politically correct Star Trek ever. I stopped watching when Major Kira was beating up Klingon warriors with her stupid little open palm punch. Besides that...Worf is a chump. For all his talk, practice and skill there isn't one alien on TNG that shows up on the bridge that couldn't kick his ass.Even Ferengi dropped him...some mighty warrior. Martok was superior in every way.
@abanks1959 See this the perfect internet troll statement. You take it out of context and make a general statement about my lack of knowledge in a certain area. Then you sniff self righteously and proceed to PWN me with your vaunted knowledge of un-armed combat tactics from your office chair. I'm NOT doing this with you dude. I know NOTHING about 'combat fighting'. I could care less. But I do know you don't learn it from watching badly written sci-fi. Do you use this name to start arguments?
Now this is what it's all about. This is Worf, the Empire, at it's finest hour. No amount of epicness was lost on that arc. Drama and story telling at it's finest, and people wonder how trekkie's are born, and what a trekkie lives for. This is one of those things. Man my blood is PUMPING!
I never watched much of DS9, but I have watched most, if not all, of TNG, and when I heard that Worf was the one who killed Gowron, I was actually surprised, and a little bit sad about it. Because in TNG, that two-part episode "Redemption", Worf and Gowron were great. They both did a lot for one another. So to see in DS9 Worf kill Gowron was a bit of a letdown considering their past.
I thought Worf only was on Gowron's side during the Civil War because nobody wanted the House of Duras to rule the Empire because they were not honorable. Receiving help from Romulans and such.
Gowron was a good warrior, but during The Dominion War he seemed to be too careless and of course very aggressive. He just wanted to give them all they got, without planning.
@thundersnake1 I think in the original TNG episode where Gowron and Duras were competing Worf mentions he doesn't really trust Gowron but supports him because he is the lesser of two evils.
@olivemike81 Worf supported Gowron because he hated Duras and his entire family for the way they betrayed the Klingon Empire to the Romulan Empire and how Duras branded his father a traitor for the Kitimer Massacre even though it was Duras' father that betrayed the Klingon Empire. Not to mention that Duras killed Kahlar (I believe that's the right spelling) who was practically Worf's wife.
for all the talk klingons are about merit. there is a woman general on the counsel at 5:20. you know she is badass. if you can fight you can lead..the way of the klingons
"Great men do not seek power, they have power thrust upon them".
Isn't that taken from Shakespeare's Twelfth night ('Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them')?
Truly Shakespeare sounds better in the original Klingon... ;)
The Founders infiltrated the Empire, aye. They impersonated General Martok and tried to trick Worf into killing Gowron, enabling the Changeling Martok to take over the empire.
Gowron owed Worf respect and honor, to listen to his council and to take heed to his words. He refused and chose to fight Worf, which is itself (in this context) an act of cowardice and dishonor. In this way, he owed Worf his life, and that he paid.
Martok would have no honor if fighting Gowron's battle. That is why he sighed. Honor is not in battle, but in the root.
How can Gowron lead an empire of warriors if he himself cannot fight?
Many people are saying Gowron shouldn't have been killed by such a blow because Klingon's have more (backup) vital organs. This argument was countered by a on TNG; because Klingon's have more vital organs it only means that more things can go wrong. When Worf broke his spine and had it replaced he only survived because of his backup neural pathways, not any other organs.
Simpler organisms are usually much more resilient in combat or life threatening situations. Take the Changelings for example
Worf is so bad-asss, he only needs two small pieces of a bat'leth to kill! It's too bad Worf didn't become Chancellor, but he knew a home-grown Klingon like Martok would be more accepted by the Klingons. "Hail Martok! Leader of destiny!"
It's ufnny that Gowron's last words mirrored the reason Worf challenged him. He didn't know when he was meeting defeat and was going to send their forces into a losing battle.
In the duel with Worf, he's lost and still thinks he's going to win. :)
Also, I'm surprised it took two series to kill Gowron off and replace him with Martok. I always liked Martok, but am not sure how many actually liked Gowron.
Great scene where Worf makes the kill. I was watching the Boondocks tough last night and I saw the ep about the "nigga moments". That's all I could think of when Worf and Gowron were eying each other, which made this a funny scene.
The actress playing Ezri Dax's acting is very good in this episode. She really looks like she's trying to find the words to say to Worf, as opposed to just reciting a line.
"If you lack the courage to fight an uphill battle, then perhaps you should retire to your bed."
For a race of honorable warriors, the Klingons are pretty snippy with the insults.

the nominees are, Darth Vader, Worf, and Homer Simpson, and the winner.....for the most epic NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! scream is.....WORF!!!!!!!
roush26 1 year ago
@roush26 Actually it's Vader. Worf's not saying "NO!", he's screaming the Klingon death chant, which is done when a Klingon warrior dies in honorable combat to warn those in Sto-Vo-Kor that a warrior is coming. Although Gowron had acted dishonorably, he died in honorable combat as a Klingon warrior and is thus given that the honor of the death chant, and is presumably destined for Sto-Vo-Kor.
And yes, I am aware of the fact that knowing this stuff makes me an irredeemable nerd.

roush26 1 year ago
@redsoxrok34 When you think about it, Worf gave Gowron the chance to salvage what was left of his honor. Also Worf and Gowron were friends at one time. Duras on the other hand was Worf's sworn enemy, and didn't get the same courtesy of the death howl.
Originalman320 1 year ago 3
@Originalman320 You're right, I hadn't thought of that. By killing him in honorable combat he secured Gowron's place among the honored dead

Greatermaxim 1 year ago 11
I never watched much of DS9, but I have watched most, if not all, of TNG, and when I heard that Worf was the one who killed Gowron, I was actually surprised, and a little bit sad about it. Because in TNG, that two-part episode "Redemption", Worf and Gowron were great. They both did a lot for one another. So to see in DS9 Worf kill Gowron was a bit of a letdown considering their past.
RetroRain2 1 year ago
@RetroRain2
He just wanted to give them all they got, without planning.
thundersnake1 1 year ago 4
@thundersnake1 I think in the original TNG episode where Gowron and Duras were competing Worf mentions he doesn't really trust Gowron but supports him because he is the lesser of two evils.
olivemike81 1 year ago
@olivemike81 Worf supported Gowron because he hated Duras and his entire family for the way they betrayed the Klingon Empire to the Romulan Empire and how Duras branded his father a traitor for the Kitimer Massacre even though it was Duras' father that betrayed the Klingon Empire. Not to mention that Duras killed Kahlar (I believe that's the right spelling) who was practically Worf's wife.

Ezri's pretty sharp here. She's a MASTER psycologist--"manipulating" Worf to man up and stand up to Gowron. Kinda reminds me of Ronald Reagan.
She should consider running for office--the UFP could use a president like her....

Worf should have been Chancellor... he's always the smartest Klingon in the room.
ale89414 2 years ago 4
Worf would have made a bad ass Chancellor
ZeroShift5000 2 years ago 2
Gowron owed Worf respect and honor, to listen to his council and to take heed to his words. He refused and chose to fight Worf, which is itself (in this context) an act of cowardice and dishonor. In this way, he owed Worf his life, and that he paid.
Martok would have no honor if fighting Gowron's battle. That is why he sighed. Honor is not in battle, but in the root.
How can Gowron lead an empire of warriors if he himself cannot fight?
Ka'less is right. Power is in Martok's meekness.
ConfirmedShot 2 years ago 6
Alas, I remember Gowron as how he used to be-how the mighty have fallen. :(
NodDisciple1 2 years ago 2
I miss Gowron LOL. Worf was the reason why he was the leader of the Empire in the first place so who else but Worf to dispose of him.
Martok and Worf go a long way, even with the episode where a changeling Gowron actually fooled the Council. Gowron OWES Worf a lot..
louiev2000 2 years ago 2
Many people are saying Gowron shouldn't have been killed by such a blow because Klingon's have more (backup) vital organs. This argument was countered by a on TNG; because Klingon's have more vital organs it only means that more things can go wrong. When Worf broke his spine and had it replaced he only survived because of his backup neural pathways, not any other organs.
Simpler organisms are usually much more resilient in combat or life threatening situations. Take the Changelings for example
playthefield21 2 years ago
Worf is so bad-asss, he only needs two small pieces of a bat'leth to kill! It's too bad Worf didn't become Chancellor, but he knew a home-grown Klingon like Martok would be more accepted by the Klingons. "Hail Martok! Leader of destiny!"
AriesTRam 2 years ago 3
Gowron was popular amongst the TNG crowd. However, the statement Dax makes, should be noted...for all members of society.
lordisaiah 2 years ago 7
worf gave him a proper death....awesome
lozephyrus 2 years ago 2
"You will not have this.....daaaaaaayyyyy"
It's ufnny that Gowron's last words mirrored the reason Worf challenged him. He didn't know when he was meeting defeat and was going to send their forces into a losing battle.
In the duel with Worf, he's lost and still thinks he's going to win. :)
Also, I'm surprised it took two series to kill Gowron off and replace him with Martok. I always liked Martok, but am not sure how many actually liked Gowron.
arsenefan 2 years ago 2
Great scene where Worf makes the kill. I was watching the Boondocks tough last night and I saw the ep about the "nigga moments". That's all I could think of when Worf and Gowron were eying each other, which made this a funny scene.

The actress playing Ezri Dax's acting is very good in this episode. She really looks like she's trying to find the words to say to Worf, as opposed to just reciting a line.
