Toby, I know you'll never read this comment, but I'll just type it anyway- you need to learn to LOCK-THE-FUCK-ON!

Just facing a guard and then turning around and throwing a knife WILL NOT hit the guard, however if you are LOCKED ON, then you WILL hit the guard. It's just like the gun. When you are in combat and you use a sword, you automatically lock on. That's why you actually use your gun well- considering you use your gun only after a frontal assault doesn't work.

Anyone can be good with the blades- all you need to do is just mash the attack button. It doesn't take any timing or skill. The sword and dagger take more skill, with the dagger being better at counters and the sword being better at regular combat.

The hidden blades are just there for people who have little skill or patience.
