It's very clear to me why she captured the heart of the 'king of cool' -- she represented a low-key private life that he had never been allowed to experience before. It's so disheartening to read all these cruel words from complete strangers who don't know the Barbie I grew up with. As far as the comments about her appearance -- in this world of youth-fighting treatments and surgeries so many women undergo we should commend her for opting to age naturally!

When she met Steve McQueen he was not the mega star 'hottie' we all used to know -- she fell in love with the man -- not the star. If you look at the way they lived their life it's obvious she was not with him for the publicity, hype, or glamour. After his death she lived a quiet life in the mountains and never talked about the years she spent with McQueen. Proceeds from her book are going to cancer research to fight the cancer that took his life -- Mesothelioma.

I remember seeing her after she started her modeling career and she said she didn't really like it because people treat you like you are stupid and talk about you as if you are not even in the room before and during photo shoots. She said she was going to do it for awhile to make enough money to buy a place in the country and get out of the limelight.

She grew up on a farm and her mom and my mom were very close for years. My mother was always getting her to model for local fashion shows and she reluctantly did. Everyone always told her she should be a model so after graduating high school she took off to New York and it wasn’t long after that when she appeared on the cover of Cosmopolitan.

I have never posted comments before but I feel compelled to do so now. I grew up with Barbie Minty -- a beautiful girl from Corvallis, OR. She was a year older than me and in my brother's class. She was absolutely stunning but totally not affected by her beauty. In fact, she really downplayed that -- wore little makeup -- and was not much of a 'girlie girl'. She was a very nice person and extremely down to earth.

Steve met Minty in Ketcham where he had a "cabin" (what some would call mansion) built. A cabin he didn't live to appreciate. Barbara was very young but helped him through those last 2 terrible years. Terry was the tough one in the end. She was really the one who took charge near the end. 30 years!. Like ancient history.
