Yes push hands is just a drill. Rather than stress over which art is the 'best' we should focus on one suitable for us and be best in it. In the end its the person and less the art.

This is stuff Walter Sigman thinks is martially effective. But this is just one student against their teacher in a many-rules, agreed upon setting, which shows very little.
I think that one thing to take into account is that tui shou is a practice tool and fa jin the safe way to express energy with a partner, these are not the same as how it would look like in combat. instead of dropping them to the ground, think about slamming their head into it, and perhaps breaking the arm/neck/back/leg or what have you. As far as BJJ I wonder how bites and eye gouges would influence a submission;)
One cannot compare push-hand with BJJ so simply. There is also real fights against those with rules. In general, a good TJ practitioner who knows the correct punching power can knock out most anyone. Unfortunately, there are very few. Without the punch, a BJJ will win as the art focuses on take-down and choke-out. No TJ person can handle a take-down or a choke-out. This video shows low level push-hands, not high level one, so at this level, my bet will be on a BJJ person to win a contest.
If you say 'no TJ person can handle a take-down', you certainly don't understand the real TJ. Taichi is more abt taigong than tech. If you truly understand taigong, tingjin and yin yang, it is very very difficult to take you down.
you're 100% right taiji meant for grappling and striking, so yes one should be well balance, thats horrible a person doesnt obvioulsy dont know there stuff if they say a tai chi person cant handle a take down, theart main attack are take downs
a bjj person has to grab on to you do anything from taking you down or putting on a lock on. Counter chin-na, attacking their root, maintaing your root and not giving them energy is a good counter and i do believe that with their level they can do well.
@cfG21 I am definitely not at this level, but the Taji and Sil Lum I had learned made me a pretty decent wrestler. I have been told I have good hips. I also train BJJ and I have also told I am extremely difficult to take down. When standing grappling with Gi, I find that you can use the hand sensitivity to avoid grips (Like avoiding grips on your pants in the guard) and then when there is an attack, accept it and move to knee on chest or mount or ...
And how it would work against Gracies? You should realize that Tui Shou is just training tool, nothing more, nothing less ... it's not real fight. Real fight looks a bit different and honestly, I don't know who would be better fighter - whether someone form Chen Clan, or someone form Gracie family ... it just depends on each fighter.
Hi, I have seen Chen Ziqiang fought when someone went to Chenjiagou to challenge the Chen Clan. Chen Ziqiang is an awesome (& pretty scary) fighter. Put the challenger down within 2 seconds.
@s1unick0 tui shou is training, but it is not only thing in Chen Taiji... i think, that tui shou is something you need to know before you start learning taiji "sanda/ sanshou". As you said, tui shou is training tool.
No, it's not cool... That what I call - fake material art. Chen Zhiqiang got beat by Wang Xian's son in Chen Village and Chen Zhiqiang only demo this push hands with his own students. Please watch his Chen Zhiqiang's competition in chen Village in 1998... He was only running around like everybody else. He couldn't use any of these external moves at the real competition! Reality check - man!
It is a demonstration of what grappling arts developed out of; it is not meant to "be used" any more than pushups or chinups are meanted to be used. It's the development of a body skill that is used here in a controled form for instruction and development purposes. Alone, if that is your point, it is not a form of submission fighting, but so what?
Gracies is a great martial artist but his BBJ will not work against a high level taiji master. How can you apply strength on a round sufface. My taiji skill is not at high level yet but thus far none BBJ or grapples could take me down. I just neutralized their strength according to yin yang.
Man. this is unfair to the partner as they tried to demostrate their points. Find a better who can protect themselves while being throw and react better to their movemnet!
Yeah, great stuff. Where's this from, do you have more, is it available anywhere? sorry, lots of questions, but you don't stuff of this quality much. Thanks
Did you all see how he moves in 01:05? That's amazing!

It's really a show between him and his students. He paid for his team to get into the BIG san shou competition in China. Of course, he won... :-)

@s1unick0 Chen Ziqiang vs a Gracie? Well, let's put it this way. I'd get into a fight with a Gracie and have a belief that it's possible to win.
