  • I notice that you have been using 3 fingers through out your lessons, my cunundrum is that i have been using 4 fingers, 2 at the bottom 2 at the top, is this incorrect? why?

  • If 4 fingers works for you that's fine... there are no unbreakable rules. I think you'll find at least 99% of bluegrass banjo pickers use 3 fingers though in the style developed by Earl Scruggs and others who developed the bluegrass style.

  • It's used to pick the melody and to play the syncopated re-entrant string. So it's not just playing bass or syncopated notes; it's responsible for melody.
