I agree. I liked Snowy White in Lizzy. I think his mellow style suited the band. It added an interesting contrast. John Sykes was too 'metal' for Lizzy.
Thin Lizzy was most successful with two guitarists who complimented each other's style. Snowy and Scott were too similar, but Snowy is a great guitarist in his own right, he just really didn't fit Lizzy as well as the others. All I can say is that Scott Gorham was more responsible for Lizzy's sound and progress than most people give him credit for.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I think John was just what Lizzy needed. Just a tidbit about their breakup, If I'm not mistaken, in '82 Scott wanted to split after Snowy left because he was just exhausted from the constant touring and lack of huge success, however after their farewell tour he may have changed his mind.
I love Lizzy in all their guises. Each period was like another chapter. What I can't get my head around is why anyone would ever want to leave Thin Lizzy. That's a concept too far for me. I'd have sold my ears, elbows & granny to have been in Lizzy for just a morning!
John Sykes brought a whole new edge to Lizzy. He inspired Phil. I remember Castlebar Festival B4 he joined Lizzy watchin from the side stage. Phil was so pissed & had to walk off stage after 2 tracks. He returned 30mins later. He was low. John inspired Phil to continue. Love U Phil
To clarify, you're entitled to your opinion. However the first bands to start playing what we consider "metal" today are widely cited to be Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Thin Lizzy only really touched metal ground in 1983 with Thunder and Lightning. John Sykes is largely responsible for this.
However Thin Lizzy with their dual-lead (with Les Pauls) guitar were what effectively influenced everyone else. It didn't matter that the Allman Brothers and Wishbone Ash were doing it before them, because Thin Lizzy was the group that brought the dual-lead into a hard rock context.

I agree with what you say about Scott Gorham. I can't imagine Lizzy without him. I still think John Sykes was the weakest link & a mistake.

No wonder Metallica cites Thin Lizzy as a major influence. Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath were the first metal bands.
