  • Man is the manipulator

  • Will Britney be doing any Richard Thompson? I doubt it somehow

  • @youngian That would imply that Britney cared about music other than pop pablum.

I would like to see her cover John Cage's 4'33". I think that would highlight her talents.

  • @youngian if she does, she'll lip sync it,like she always does..

  • Is he fan of Britney?

  • @K1ngggg I doubt it.He was doing the 1000 Years of Popular Music and incorporated an old English music in the middle to show that all music are related in some way.I think that's what he said when he did this.

  • One of the best songs of our time ..........

  • se la jalo0 bn bonito0 con este cover¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • I think that it's cool how he plays this song and brings out the craft that went into writing it. It's actually a pretty good song, when you hear it played by a real musician.

  • richard plays alot with fairport convention and i saw him live at the dome in brighton on 3/2/11

  • Does anyone knows the name of the percussionist?

  • @jozanders Debra Dobkin

  • does anyone knows the name of the percussionist?

  • Just fucking brilliant

  • I don't have the slightest clue who this guy is, but this completely entertained me. Absolutly Hilarious. :D

  • @BELIEVEinYOURSELFo0 If this is the first you've heard of Richard Thompson, you have some wonderful homework to do...about 40 years of amazing songs.

  • @0MirrorGirl

I guess I kinda missed something along the way. Stinks....but I seriously have no idea who this guy is. He just randomly popped up on ym home page. So here I am. :P

  • This was originally a Louis Armstrong song...

  • @soulshiner That would explain a lot, except there's a faked version of that released by a comedy site. Is that what you've seen?

  • @mwmeyer

Probably - i can't imagine Satchmo doing this...

  • it IS a good song, i'm glad someone cool took it on! this time i looked him up because he's scheduled to be nearby.

  • It's a good song, I just can't listen to Britney's nauseating voice

  • hes some singer!!

deadly is the word id use

  • 32 Britney fans got really confused.

  • wait, I liked a BS song? damn Richard, you're good.

  • Brilliant

  • oops....I think I pressed the play button again....

  • It`s a REAL song

  • watch?v=Nd_gvR06j6s

  • Yes, he may not be able to dance but have you heard him singing his song about Fred Astaire?

  • This dude made my day!

  • here is what happens when everything that is good in life take on that which isnt so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats just a well written song, it was good with britney to

  • Did Richard Thompson was a soldier? His looks like real soldier...

  • You know they say a Good Comedian can make the Phone Book sound funny... This is the musical quivalent of that.

How he can give so much dignity and substance to a Britney song is Fantastic!

  • I really like his voice!

  • Richard Thompson proving just how talented, and of course, legendary he is.

  • when i watched 1000 years of popular music he did instead of this song he did Maneater by the pussycat dolls, just as well as he did this one...

PS notice how i dont bitch and whine like the others have about how much better this is than the original...Its not big and its not clever...Abit like a dwarf with learning difficulties.

  • Best... Description... Ever...

  • @Alta2340 lol I went to hear the BS's version so I'm getting you comment now and boy are you right! :) Besides, I don't think he's look good in the red jumpsuit! lol

  • Great version...at least he's singing LIVE..

  • I love this one...xxx

  • Damn good.

  • oh yeah...go richard...you have done the impossible made a britney spears song sound good:):)

  • amazing how a serious musician can turn a shit song into something worth a listen lol

  • @me19276 More like Britney turns every perfectly good song into shit.

  • Не грусти, дорогой, пусть далёка дорога...

Синий месяц сияет... вдали за окном...

Свет бросая на всё... тихо-тихо уходят...

Ну, а мы посидим, просто чая попьём...

  • @slepandzy

    What you said! Double!

  • @slepandzy ты ето к чему?

  • uhhh...for all you peopel who dont know REAL music...Brittney just ripped this song from Louis Armstrong. Go look it up...thumb me up or down... doesn't change the fact that Brittney steals music.

  • I heard this on XM radio a few days ago.

  • I am suspicious. Is there a proof he didn't write the song himself ?

  • Richard Thompson OBE - congratulations RT :)

  • wow, that's great! :D

  • I'm astounded, surprised - at first I laughed but it's really good!

  • Wow!!! It's really hard to make a girl song sound good with a guy voice. This is actually extremely good!

  • @slepandzy Google translate not working too well for you?

  • i wonder why Bill (L4D) is playing this song X_X

  • If a male is not not able to be with a love with emale though his menatality ilness and his unlukiness and unabilities, he may find the love with males. or dogs.

What is mean "Ups!" is ths mean he had a bromplem with his bad stomack?

    I disslike, boring.

  • Comment removed

  • @slepandzy

yeah, and if a female is not able to be in love with a male because of her mental illness and her unluckiness and unabilities, she may find the love with a banana.

    just playing with your words.

  • @slepandzy

ok, I know you're trying to tell me something, but google-translator isn't our friend.

I think I understand at least why you hate that "oops" thing

  • Richard Thompson is one of the worlds best kept secrets. A guy who can sing and play geetar. Both to a high standard. In fact better than any of the $hite that passes for music in this day and age

  • Genius, pure and simple...

  • simply lovely, thx for posting

  • I really dislike the original version (I dislike all from Britney Spears). But this cover : fuck it's so good !!

  • This is one of the most amusing things that I have heard in a while. I am a more recent fan of Richard Thompson, and think that his song Beeswing is one of the best I have heard. The band Mad Dog Mcrea does a great cover of it.

  • i could listen to this verson and not feel very ashamed of myself...he does an amazing job!

  • I've been a Richard Thompson fan since the late 60's he's rarley let me down either live or with his recordings as his latest "Dream Attic" shows, and this is him at his best doing what does best. Thanks for the post.

  • Bizarrely if you listen to the lyrics it does sound a bit like the sort of thing RT would write. Maybe he recognized something of the darkness in the song.

  • He's freaking great!

  • Perfect music

  • Although, you have to admit that breaking into a little Michael Flatley at 2:36 would have been pretty cool, too!

  • Very Cool

  • I LOVE HIS VERSION !!

  • 'Pop Trash' Is and was music already. The whole point of this is to show how good all music is and how it is all so similar.

  • Freakin' genius! What balls to choose this pop fluff. Good on ya, Thompson!

  • I guess only he could make this sound great!

  • i was there, every night of the meltdown

it's good to seit was videoed

  • i was there, every night of the meltdown

  • Oh my God I hate Britney Spears, I hate her so much even though Richard Thompson obviously enjoyed the song enough to cover it! >:^(

Britney Spears is not a terrible singer, and the majority of people who hate on her are only doing so because she's in the mainstream.

  • mwmeyer;Friday on My Mind Is hard to top.Brilliant cover, even for RT.

  • i like his little dance at 2:14..

  • Fabulous!

  • Brilliant! I saw him do this show in 2006- fab!!

  • this is only proves that britney is for all ages... hahaha lol

  • Richard Thompson out does Britney Speers on "Oops I Did It Again"

It just shows that a good song performed by a real musician can rise above it's original limitations.

  • @steveblomerth1 bravo,well said!

  • @steveblomerth1 makes you realize it's actually a pretty good song.

  • @Yehudittx I was thinking the same thing - I heard a similar treatment of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and whatever you think of Ms Spears' talent, it's apparent that she had some decent material to work with.

  • IIwill dance cause I cant sing.Pete likes his guitar playing.iIcan sing as well as he can. Who the hell is this?

  • I think you really did---and most effectively and interestingly--not much like what's her name, ah., did it. probably..THANKS FOR DOIN IT...

    better!!

  • Think that's Richard Thompson, but I could be wrong.. Great cover, went surprisingly well. :)

  • I remember Mr. Thompson with Simon Nichol jamming their way through the Wombles and the "Crossroads" theme. That was a bit ago (Linda was singing)

  • @FullersRd

Those Wombles tunes were great. Mike Batt's greatest! (or is Katie Melua just the latest Womble?)

  • jeah!!! great.

  • The crowd shots make me wonder if most of the audience haven't heard the B.S. version.

    Doubles the irony.

  • Judith Owen = Mrs Harry Shearer.

  • Great tempo chage at 2:40

  • Real artists like RT create lasting music out of hard times."Across a Crowded Room" is proof of that.Corporate creations like Brittany Spears just implode when times get the least bit difficult.

  • wow, talk about your career peeking ages ago, wha'ts next eh? umbrella ella ella? or whatever the fuck the title is?

  • i almost wanted to give the context but its better this way.

  • This song is actually not an atypical theme for Richard Thompson. Fits reasonably well alongside "You Dream Too Much" and "Sibella".

  • I saw1000 years of popular music, though he didnt play this on my one, he played Man Eater by the Pussycat Dolls.

He was properly good, though odviously as the concert was about 2hrs, he didnt have enough time to play every single great record of the 20th century. Because if he did we would have been there all day, which wouldnt necaserily be a bad thing.

no Bowie, or Beatles, on the concert i saw.

But what was really good was he played Solid Air, as this was a week after John Martyns death.

  • Hilarious. It ain't no "Dimming of the Day" but it's pretty funny. That the audience was singing ALONG, OTOH, is downright scary.

  • what RT knows that many posters don't is that is this a wonderfully written pop song... with a surprisingly dark edge, and nobody knows dark like RT!

  • I love this its so funny. Adore Richard T

  • Richard Thompson is a master who can make even a bimbo's song look beyond belief amazing.

  • Most early Spears songs were actually written and produced by Linda Perry,a discreet cover for high profile, low talent "artists."She stopped working with Spears because she was just too dense.

  • I kinda liked it. It gives a new feel to the song. Although I prefer Britney's version.

  • You know, the funny thing is his version actually works!

  • look like Gretsch Drums

  • LOL

  • i just hate the way he says "oops"

  • He's beyond good.So many people with his kind of talent take themselves way too seriously.Bono, anyone?Rt could make Three Blind Mice sound soulful.

  • @b3n2p1 RT singing 3 Blind Mice?? That could be very scary and definitely not for the children!! Just imagine RT singing the word 'cut'.

  • WAY TO RUIN A MASTERPIECE!!!!!!

  • @Meeps

Masterpiece? Britney Spears songs are the musical equivalent of a Hostess Twinkie, which is to say they have no real value beyond being mass produced sugary junk. This guy took that Twinkie, sliced it up, added some ice cream a bit of syrup and some strawberries for garnish. It's still a Twinkie, but its got more substance and flavor thanks to RT's performance.

When Britney starts performing arias, we can talk about masterpieces.

  • @MikeTaylorLives

That's nice. I didn't ask for your opinion. I don't give a shit about what you think. Britney Spears is amazing, get over it.

  • @Meeps P{osting here asks for opinions - deal with it.

  • @Meeps

You got it anyways. Britney is a puppet. A marketing tool used to make money. Nothing more. The same holds true for singers like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. Notice how Tiffany and Debbie Gibson dropped off the face of the earth?

Here's some REAL musical talent for you.

Miles Davis, U2, the Beatles, Joe Satriani, Andres Segovia, John Williams, The Police, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Brian Setzer, Ray Charles, Nightwish, Pink Floyd, Prince, Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Herbie Hancock

  • @MikeTaylorLives Mmmkay, guy. No one likes a music snob. That's your opinion, and I'll keep mine. I love Britney.

  • Britney's song are so good and well-known that everyone make different covers :) And people singing along! :)

  • aww, britney can sing :)

  • he does have a great voice!

  • Wow, a vapid and empty song being sung by a real legend. He must have a great sense of humor.

  • this is awesome! his voice sounds better on it than the original, and the time change actually makes it interesting. i'm glad he let that happen.

  • I love the lyrics to this song. Its made for any nice person who unintentionally made people love them and think they're perfect and innocent. lol

The original song use to be my anthem :D!

  • Britney who ?

  • womderful version much better than britneys !

    this is music!!!

  • RT should have been a salesman--if he can sell this, he can sell anything!

  • I diden't know he converted to Islam!

  • @ibrahimakhtar

It happened in the mid 1970's.

He follows Sufism, which means he does not think that killing innocent people in the name of Allah is a very good idea.

That said, he is also a devout follower of the English Cricket team, which surely is a constant inspiration for many of his darker songs!.

  • @neohip HHHhhhhmmmmm.Thank you for your info.

  • @rhulm

I believe that Islam is a religion of peace.

But all religions are subject to Human extremism.

For the most part,I was quoting an Interview with Mr Thompson, that I read some ten years ago.Not long after 911.

Your problem seems to be with him,a fellow muslim, and not me,a lover of his music.

  • @neohip Goddamn hippies!

  • now this is wierd but coool !! :P

  • Think you can upload the "It wont be long" cover. Pretty sure it was played on the same video.

  • better than the original

  • I was reading an article on Richard Thompson and thought I'd see what he sounds like...how great is he !! Wow. I am totally blown away.

  • It *is* from 1000 Years of Popular Music, as evidenced by Debra Dobkin's presence on percussion. However, he has been known to do this in his solo shows.

  • Yes, it's from 1000 Years of Popular Music, the DVD which is unfortunately out of print. Amazon still has the CD sets that were bundled with it, and MP3 downloads from same. This is *not* the best tune on the album (King Henry? Blackleg Miner? hard choices!), or even the best that's a cover of modern rock on it (easy pick: 1985).

  • Anyone out there know if he ever talked about (and played) this on some NPR show?

I heard it a long time ago, didn't remember the artist's name, and have been looking for it ever since.

This is brilliant work. Who knew it was really such a great song? (better: so many great songs)

True genius. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • Haha, this is brilliant. So so good.

  • Who's Britney Spears?

  • @Yavvie Shame on you... She's princess of pop

  • A musician. Look it up.

  • love the hand moves at the end!

  • if this is from the 1000 years of popular music thing he did, then i saw him on that at berklee school of music

  • My God!! britney's looking a bit rough these days

  • are you deaf?

  • i think richard digs the song

  • Great songby RT. Britney watchit and weep but don't lend him the costume. LOL

  • Britney never sounded so good!

  • I think It's amazing how RT can play a bit of fluff and take it beyond irony into something artistically relevant

  • I pretty much hate pop but I think Britney's a pretty darn good songwriter. RT wouldn't be able to do this if it weren't a good solid song.

  • @bluetortilla What makes you think Britney wrote this?

  • @jayrayinnv yes, max martin and rami yacoub wrote oops, but i've road that she has written or produced a substantial portion of her own stuff, and for that i give her credit. i also heard she would have done more but she signed contracts that bound her not to. i'm not a big pop fan believe me, but my daughter likes her :)

  • @adjectivesarecool No one could make this song artistically relevant.

RT just made it suck less.

  • @adjectivesarecool

It's just a great tune. Give it to any decent singer / player they'd do the same. Credit to the writer as much as (or more than) RT. Britney may well be 'fluff' but don't blame the songwriting!!

  • @adjectivesarecool I think he was just taking the piss, you've read too much into it

  • @TheYTChronicles Yeah, I know. I Just can’t stop myself. Must run…deconstructing the Twilight series.

  • I would go as far to say it's better than Britney's version!

  • As long as he doesn't dress up for the video!!!!!!!!!!!

  • your absolutely right it rules

  • Richard Thompson is one of the world's finest musicians. This is from his 1000 Years of Popular Music...
