  • Hey dude! Your videos are pretty friggin cool! thanks to you i have successfully grown sphagnum moss, and you helped me to look after my nepenthes rafflesiana! I've ALWAYS had a passion for anything that moves (especially insects and plants). You videos have inspried me to FILL my room with plants and insects! it has also driven my mum CRAZY ;) im going through a load of you videos liking them as i go :) when i upload my first video i will do a shout out to Reptiliatu :)

    Thanks a lot :)

  • @ChrisLaCIR Thanks so much buddy, your too kind! :) Glad you are enjoying my videos!

  • Do you think this would be safe to keep with indian stick insects? It would help alot as well as looking good.

  • @drakomytaka599 Hmmmm it would be hard to maintain with the requirements of the stick insects, let alone unnecessary... What you could do instead is create an enclosure environment that has a soil bottom and plants that the stick insects can eat growing naturally within your enclosure! Now that would be cool :)

  • nice video! thanks for sharing!

  • @hong0505 Thanks, your welcome :)

  • so can you grow sphagnum moss with just using the peat and the dried fiber??? or do you need live moss??? 5/5 great video by the way :P

  • @hukmai Thanks very much! Yup, you can grow it with the dried fiber :). just wet it with warm water keep it wet (doesn't have to be warm after the initial soaking) and then keep in in these conditons under bright light. Eventually (like maybe even a few months later) it will begin growing new moss :)! Hope this helps

  • Thanks so much for going to all the trouble of showing us all how to grow and propagate Sphagnum. I will definitely be linking others to your series.

For those who do not have an indoor set up the moss can be easily grown outdoors. Same principles apply. Only difference is that I would sit the potted moss into a container of distilled or r/o water up to within an half inch of the top of the pot. This would help protect the moss if you cannot keep tabs on how dry it gets during the day.

  • @jcseiji You are very welcome :)! Thanks so much, that's very kind of you. Yes, this is also true and although I never got to filming that I do have a few pots of sphagnum growing outside on my deck :P. Take care, Dayyan

  • Thanks for taking the time to produce this 3 part guide, very interesting, as I need some Sphagnum Moss growing for putting around my Venus Fly Plants.

    Regards, Marcus.

  • from your videos it looks like sphagnum moss needs alot of water, so wouldnt the actual plant that the moss is growing around be over watered?

  • Hi dude, I have some sphagnum that i want to grow, it's mosre like dead sphagnum I think because of it's color (white, and some parts red and others are alive) I have a 1600 lumen bulb, 6400K and 26 W can i use it to grow the sphagnum or what bulb would u reccomend to me to use for growing my sphagnum.

thanks and very nice videos all 5/5 stars

  • @Gemthermakleingk Thanks so much for the kind words and sorry for the late reply... Ya absollutely! That sounds good. It all depends on the colour you want to achieve. The more light output you give your moss will go from green to red (hopefully). I use a T10 and a few spiral florescent bulbs for extra brightness/lumens. Remember whatever you used shouldn't give off to much heat. Take care, Dayyan

  • i wonder... can i do this without a green house??

  • @porq99 You would probably still need to have the bright special lighting over the moss but yes, I believe it is still quite possible. :)

  • @jcseiji Yes Sphagnum grows outside in full sun. I grow mine on the north side where it gets about 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight on sunny days. Of course the main problem is that the pot the moss is growing in needs to be dunked into a container of distilled or r/o water up to near the lip of the pot. Otherwise you can spray to keep the surface mosit as is necessary.

  • Hey dude awsome video!!! Im thinking about growing some nepenthes from seed and apparently they love to grow on sphagnum, so shall I just scatter the seeds over the live spagnum or is there any method in which you would encourage me to use?

  • That was really cool and very interesting!! :) I love your enthusiasm towards what you do it's awesome!!

  • Your video is great! Good! Thanks for showing us!

  • This is probably a stupid question but do you need to give your carnivorous plants bugs or can you just fertilize them? Nice vid.

  • Very rewarding!!
