It's such a pity that another musical genius and a compatriot of mine lost his infancy, his friends and his sanity cause to his "ambitious" family, to become an hysteric, unsocial & half-crazy homo who can't even tie his shoes without his mother's help... Not to mention that most of his mucical abilities have degraded in a ruined state... Another promising talented man destroyed...
Beautiful heartfelt performance with the (duh, we ain't got no technology in 1984) end cut off. I suppose if given the chance to listen to Mozart through time travel the most our wizards could come with is 2 tin cans and string.
Sgouros' interpretation of this piece greatly matured in the following years. I strongly recommend you download his later performance of the Chopin Ballade 4 (in better sound) here:-
I think his interpretation is very similar to Oleg Boshniakovich (you can also find Boshniakovich Ballade 4 at Youtube, that is the great pianist..). For a 14 year old boy, this is good enough, but Boshniakovich has more profundity, because of age...Chopin wrote Ballade 4 at his last period, there are lots of feeling inside this master pieces which 14 year old boy can not understand.
OorvakanSar, it's possible he's the best pianist you've ever heard. That says something about you and your perception, nothing else. Given the fact you're still in your oral phase (as shown in your enlightning comment), it doesn't surprise anyone that your ears still have to open.
allegrissimo, yesterday i heard him playing Chopin 1st concerto at Megaro Mousikis in Athens.. There's a video for this concerto here in youtube and Sgouros is only 12 years old. I prefer to judge him from what i heard last night (he is 39 now) and you should do the same. He's only 14 here.. So, i must agree with OorvakanSar based not only on some videos of his first concerts.
yes, in that point of view i agree with you.. most of the videos of sgouros here in youtube are from his early concerts.. If you have the chance to hear him now that he is older, don't miss it. Have a nice evening
I also went a few days ago at Athens Megaron Concert Hall (lol) where he played Tchaikovsky's Concert Fantasy.. It was incredible. Now, he ll play again for Athens audience in April (Beethoven piano concerto no.3 with the BBC orchestra)
My only thing I have with his performance is that he often takes his time in the middle of a phrase, interrupting the flow of the melody going through the phrase from the beginning to the end, keeping the phrase from achieving maximum effect. Besides that, it's excellent.
It's an incredible performance, let me tell you! Never have I heard it so fast. He plays it approximately 2 minutes faster than is usual (7 minutes and 40 seconds?)
I thought Thibaudet and Zimerman made weird faces...this guy takes the cake! But aside from his face, it was an amazing performance, and at age 14! Knowing Sgouros's style, I expected him to play the coda much faster..anybody heard him play Scherzo no. 2? Yeah, you know what I mean...simply amazing.

April? I'll be there! Where did you find that? The program for 2009 hasn't been listed.
ClaudioArrau 3 years ago
You can find the program (in paper form) at the Megaron. It is not yet uploaded in the internet site. Lang Lang will also visit Athens this spring

what do you think of my interpretation? Be indulgent ^^.

His rubato is really terrible; he turns Chopin into porn. There's nothing natural about this performance.
allegrissimo 4 years ago
he is just a kid. True emotion doesn't fully mature until later in life I think

into PORN? although i understand what you're saying, wrong word choice. very wrong.

why do much people think the first ballad is better? Everybody can here this one is just the best piece ever written.

Yes, you're right. I think 4th Ballade is more surprising, don't you?
