how is it known that IQ scores are normally distributed? I'm fairly smart and it doesn't make complete sense to me... was there like a major study done or something?
We know that IQ scores are normally distributed because when we take a fairly large set of random IQ values and plot them on a coordinate system, we always get a distribution in the well-known "bell-shape".
@John Snider. That's actually a common misconception, recently disproved. Apparently IQ scores don't even follow the stastically analyzable non-normal curves that we're aware of. Interesting stuff, and also kind of bewildering. Check out the paper below:

I'm back from vacation.
