  • That's the question I asked myself aswell many times: A child growing up just listening to atonal music. It would probably get used to it so much that it would find tonal music as bewildering as we find atonal music. I wonder how such a person would react to Bach's music...

  • My dear youtube and gould fans, does anyone know what piece he is playing. It starts at 8:08. Thanks in advance!!!

  • @baroquegeek It's the first movement of Schubert's 5th symphony. Wiki says GG would play transcriptions of Schubert and Bruckner symphonies in private, and here he is doing it. You're welcome!

  • -BachBachBach- stops abruptly "What do you think would happen if you kidnapped a child?" haha

  • happy birthday glenn gould (september 25th)

  • I wonder how fast he could type lol.

  • He is rambling , but this happens at that age.

  • "Is THIS shy music?" LOL Dude was stuttering like "uh ..uh.. I'm a dick who doesn't know shit." Owned. That's what you get for messing with the G man.

  • Gould would've been an awesome blogger/tweeter

  • @eleninamyers seguramente le daria bastante pena ver a un monton de ignorantes opinando sobre musica xd

  • What a genius

  • He is extremely good-looking. Like WOWW

  • He's hilarious. I love his justifications for not attending concerts.

  • @meats0 He didn't trust people, and with good reason.

  • Thank you uploader. Where did you acquire this footage, if I may ask?

  • a-hole with a chainsaw ruining the interview

  • @bluesmaster79 otherwise known as a boat

  • He is really good. I'm serious. I really mean it.

  • The way he speaks sounds very pretentious to me. Great musician though, I guess.

  • @cupcakestereo Think it's got something to do with his (IMO quite brilliant) mind. Just listening to him, you hear him form complete sentences in his head before uttering them. Guess it reflects his maticulate and perfected musicality - that's the way he ticks.

  • Haha, Gould's imitation of the child singing at the end is priceless.

  • I think it's the lawnmower in the background that's vexing him

  • well it sure is annying as fuck. Damn.

  • he reminds me of one of my friend~

i feel that he's quite nervous during the conversation

  • Wow...........

  • In pt. 1 the intro credits and info have been replaced with just the title (maybe) of the documentary. What is the name of this documentary, and when was it recorded, and (maybe I'll find out at part 6..) by whom? It appears to be a CBC documentary as I recognize the voice of the narrator but I'm not sure.

    Thanks in advance.

    - JBM

P.S. No, I'm not from Afghanistan, Montréal in fact. Shut down channel over "beta" fiasco and all this partner baloney. Had CBC doc. up myself actually (L Cohen).

  • Oh, and thanks for this wonderful documentary! Gould is and always has been my favourite pianist. Probably because of my love of Bach and his interpretations.

  • Looks like around 1962.

  • It was 1959 I believe... I looked it up. Lemme check again...

  • Well I can't find the specific reference, but 1960 appears to be right according to someone called "Singer Saints"...

  • CONTINUED...I forgot to mention *Many Books* later, too! I think I have every book that was ever written about him, they are all good ones (& very interesting)! There were so many 'sides' to him, & he was such a "character" one could never be bored reading about him...& certainly never tire of listening and/or watching him play the piano!

  • This is the 1st video I ever saw of GG! It was many years ago, on a sleepless night when I was up surfing the channels, I turned to PBS & there he was! I was struck by his handsome face, then his distinctive voice & intelligent conversation, & when he played the piano, I was "hooked", I had to find out just who he was & all about him! I was 'bitten' by the *Gould-Bug* & now, many years, tapes, CD's, & DVD's later, I'm still a huge fan! Never tire of listening to "his" Bach & watching him play!

  • Love GG's Collie dog, "Banquo"! He's so 'playful' at 00:28 & again at 08:57, he's loving being petted, then at 09:55, when the visitor drops his hand away, & Banquo pokes gently at the hand, with his paw, as if to say; "No, don't stop, pet me some more!" My dog does that exact same thing when we are petting or scratching her behind the ears, she'll jab at your hand for "more"; she won't let you stop till she "says so"! I'd like to see more of Banquo! He was so playful and sweet (& loyal to GG)!

  • I didn't know they had combustion engines in Canada.

  • I didn't know they had Labor Dy in Canada

  • This is not the point but.... his vocalise actually sounds very pleasant in this recordinng

  • Gould always talks like he's reading from a prepared script. He uses such precise language and never sounds like he's just talking with the other guys.

  • thinking a lot does that to one

  • Inane comments, these; especially since we're talking about a greatly cultivated soul and a genius...

  • I'll bet he got mad fly hos.

  • Gone too soon.

  • Too much gifts and ... God, the man is also handsome and charming!

  • Sounds like he's being interviewed by Peter Lorre.

  • Is Peter Lorre an 80 year old woman?

  • Yes, he is.

  • She is Actually 87

  • And HOT!

  • well too bad for nolalolala he's dead already or she'll be in seventh heaven now.

  • kiding naping kids...... man glenn scares me sometimes lol

  • The "other" shy piece is opening mov't of Schubert's Fifth symphony.

What's incredible is that GG could play Webern by memory. Holy COW!

  • What is the 2nd piece he starts playing (when he says this is shy music)?

  • Is this shy?

    *plays*

    priceless!

  • thanks man

  • hey, this is absolutely lovely!
