The point of this show is the ridiculous renditions of random musicals. If you didn't already come to that conclusion, you didn't really study the show, therefore your argument is negated.
I think this show is one of the funniest things I have ever seen/heard. It is a brilliant composition based on those references. And come on, Monkeys and Playbills is one of the most clever things ever created.
@ScarfsAndGuitars i honeslty couldnt tell whether the 500 25 600 ppl thing was meant to be an obvious copy of rent's 500 25 600 minutes, or if they just thought people wouldnt notice, but i didnt really like it
@augustina0 The word copy has a pretty negative connotation, kinda leading towards plagiarism or a lack of creativity. The 525,600 is more like a reference/quotation/homage, which are very common in jazz and literature but not as much in musical theater... at least, musicals don't often quote other musicals (They quote other genres all the time). When you take such a small part, how can it be copying?
And if I may ask, any idea why it doesn't strike you as funny?
@augustina0 It was definitely meant to be a reference to Rent. If you listen to all the other songs in the show, they reference a lot of things. There's "I'm just a bill" from Schoolhouse rock, "I need your shoes" referencing Into the Woods, and they mention stuff like Les Mis, Phantom and the Tonys.
It really was a magical night.....thank you for this. Have told many about it: now they can see/hear your gorgeous harmonies and lyrics. Nine People's Favorite Thing indeed!
