The reason was very simple: only Russia had opportunity to protect the christian population of Georgia and Armenia from complete anihilation by Turkey. Very bloody story, isn't it?

And only in 1801 Georgia became the Russian territory. When in 1805 40 thousand persians invaded Gergia they were stopped by a small brigade of Russians (only 500 men). Yes, I'm proud of my history!
