1. Unwritten lyrics off the top of your head either to a beat or acapella

2. Written lyrics to an industry beat without a hook

3. Written lyrics to an industry beat with just one verse

Etc. "Freestyling" has grown into a more broader term in the music industry rather then just being bound to "rapping off the top of your head". Ig it's that way cuz they couldn't originate another name for it.

The original definition of a freestyle is a rap that was random or about random stuff. All the older generation of rappers from late 70's to 80's knew that a freestyle was just you and friends spittin random stuff for fun. But those who were spittin off the top were rappers who couldn't read or write...so they would go off the top. Then ppl were more impressed by those who could just go off the top so that became the new meaning of a freestyle.

Obviously, there will always be some words that you will always put together when rhyming; sometimes, there are some bars that you used in one of your written raps, but they should never be something you wrote entirely. from what I see a freestyle is a lesser organized rap, still written out, but it's just straight rapping with no hook just bars. That's just what i'm seeing, however I think that freestyle should actually be what it once was and come off the top because it is a lot more challenging and it shows where the true talent is because really if you take enough time basically anyone can write a decent rap it's just hard to make it flow.
