  • Most of the tracks on Gillan and Mr. Universe are similar.... so which is the better buy?

  • @susannahschaff

Gillan (the japanese album) is great, its very experimental and different sounding, kind of an avant garde edge, but i prefer Mr. Universe. It's more straight up hard rock like Deep Purple. But hey to each his/her own....

  • I am not sure phiffy66 is correct all I know is that this is one of the best songs ever made and I wish I could go back to the late 70s early 80s to watch gillan live again in his prime DeMonfort Hall Leicester

  • 6:00 might be one of the highest notes ever taken by male singer

kind of sad Ian lost his voice too soon, I'd really like to listen to this live

  • @Kirshach

Gillan, Plant, Cornell...they all lose the higher notes later in life. Damn aging! lol.

  • @philfly66 well, actually it's not about aging, it's about vocal technique

  • voce semplicemente favolosa. potente, calda, precisa, acuta...in poche parole ian gillan

  • voce semplicemente favolosa. potente, calda, precisa, calda....

  • the vocal changes and dynamics are amazing. only mr. gillan can pull it off with such conviction and emotion.

  • rockon threw life gillan.\m/.

  • gillan i love u :* :* :*

  • The Man that shaped rock n roll...

  • Such deep emotion!!!

    Gillan, my hero!!! XD

  • Besides Gillan himself i don't think the rest of the band got recognition they deserved, awesome band, saw them live 3 times & then would you believe it 4 years ago the newly formed Guy/McCoy/Torme did a charity gig at my local hall as GMT, to say i was on cloud 9 is an understatement, spoke to the guys, had a laugh with John cos we were the only two bald people there, at end of gig Bernie shook my hand & handed me his plectrum, what a night!

  • whistle register

  • @jaganjacfan and ur point is?

  • @laithlaith91 and my point is that that is super high for a man to do,and he is baritone, and that mr. Ian is GOD!

  • I still own the original Japanese vinyl pressing of this LP. I don't think it was ever released outside of Japan, other than CD reissue perhaps.

I'm pretty sure the correct release date of this LP was 1978, and not 1979, at least what the vinyl indicates. At some point I'll get around to doing a vinyl rip upload here at YouTube as well :)

  • Beautiful song, beautiful voice . . . .

  • this is a real rock singer

  • absolute bloody fantastic

  • Ian Gillan, Robert Plant and David Byron are the greatest singers of all time.

  • otan ftasis sta sinora tis logikis anazitas to parelthon

  • @Dimitris9000 πες τα φιλε

  • @Dimitris9000 το ιδιο νιωθω και εγω.. .

  • Goood, I love Gillan's screaming, it gives mi shivers. Oh, and i love Gillan, he could be my husband ;f

  • Thanks Ian for this sweet and deep song. You are the voice of hard rock!

  • Comment removed

  • 70's Rock is the best for me, there was Glam, Metal, Hard-Rock, Punk-Rock, all the best rock bands are from the 70's

  • One of his best ever songs IMHO.

  • bellissimoo grande ian

  • This is one bad ass song!!! I'm a HUGE, HUGE, DEEP PURPLE fan, yet I should be more familiar with Ian's solo career. Thanks for sharing! :~)

  • This song has been written by Ian and Colin Towns, one of the best british keyboard players. Still remember the beautiful and emotional live rendition at Cucciago (Italy) on Dec. 8, 1979 - Mr. Universe-Tour.

Btw "Mr. Universe" is one of my all time faves (side A is u-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e !!!)

  • OMG !!! This is SO good..to my shame I had forgotten just how powerful..Thank you

  • This is definitely one of his best songs. Also check out "She Tears Me Down" from the same album. Magic.

  • I haven't heard that for quite some time. I just played it twice, and may even indulge in another round. Thanks for posting this.

I'll be seeing Mr Gillan in a few weeks. The last time I saw Purple, I actually got to meet him and chat for about an hour. He's the man!!

  • Saw him live in Blackburn England 1978, and he sang this.

It was a god like moment. One of the highlights of my life.

  • Congratulations for your experience. I would wanna seeing it live. Ian Gillan ever was a icon.

  • Nastybutzky this is from an album before Mr Universe! it's on that album thought. It's from the GILLAN album. I can't remember who was the guitarist on this record!" but it's NOT Bernie Torme who is on the album Mr Universe. And Wenglish1968 You should listen to what Ian Gillan did after Deep Purple?

  • Man, it's him, but I've never heard his voice sound the way it does at the beginning and some of the other parts. A little like Paul Rogers.... not that that's a bad thing. I lover Ian's voice though.

  • @wenglish1968

I don't hear any similarity to Paul Rodgers at all.

  • compared with gillan ozzy can´t sing at all

  • Does any1 know is this song really about Ozzy Osbourne?? Where did you guys get that info? I couldnt find any information regarding the meaning of this song:(

  • Where did you ever get the idea this is Ozzy Osbourne? It is Ian Gillan, what a voice...Ozzy only wishes he could sing like Gillan!

  • gillan is rock and roll, rock and roll is gillan. love this song

  • pure music

  • Very moving song...Fantastic piano and incredible voice

  • AMAZING!

  • Great song!!!!!!!

Mr Universe is a great record.

Gillan's work with Purple is well known but he's solo stuff isn't and that's a shame I think. Maybe because his solo work time to time isn't so guitar fleshy as Purple and the music is a bit more difficult for a casual but he's got great songs on those records.

  • Amazing voice, i really need to buy this album.

  • Gillans finest moment! Great song, great playing, best voice, amazing screams and top guitar solo! My god i love Mr.Universe!!

  • Awesome voice, Awesom man. Gillan is Father of rock.

  • First heard this back in 84 when i was just 14, it just goes to show ya the real deal really does stand the test of time, it`s nice to know Gillan wrote this song about OZZY .

  • What a voice...!

  • I wanna be free!

  • Oh shit! I haven't heard it before.. it's powerful and rousing. wow!

  • Gillan inspired Boals,Dickinson,Halford, Johnson,Dio, Johnson, Tate etc. to name but a few...He was the first and most rock n rollof all of the "Metal" singers

  • Wow! What a solid song!

Ian gillan is best heavy metal singer.

  • Great pice of the art!!!!!

    Golden Voice!!!!!!

Ian Gillan is The Best of Best!!!!!!

  • Dont listen him, he is lunatic and serb too!!!!

  • Ok, "GOLDEN VOICE"!! I don´t know about Mark Boals, but Brian Jonhson one time mentioned Ian Gillan as inspiration...

Anyway, your legacy is extreme, incredible, giant.

  • Of course, GOLDEN VOICE!!!!!

  • 5:35 - 6:21 is just incredible

  • Amazing, fantastic, wonderful piece!!! For me, Ian Gillan deserves being called "SILVER VOICE". Undoubtful, a greatest vocal of rock. An influence for many singers: Bruce Dickinson; Eric Adams; Rob Halford; Brian Jonhson; and many others...

  • no...GOLDEN VOICE!

Brian Jhonson?I would say Mark Boals...

  • ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The best singer in hard rock:Ian Gillan,ever and ever.¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Amazing ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • MAESTRO

  • does someone have a very good sound quality recording of this song performed live to share? many thanks

  • Just like to say something to you (nazzare79). My personal idol and inspiration is Freddie Mercury, in my opinion a unique voice as well as stage presence and songwriting, one of a kind. Right after, there is Gillan, a man who gives me pleasure listening to, a voice from other galaxy as Mercury.

I would like to thank you for all the inspirative comments about Gillan.

  • you have good tastes :) ....

this song is my favourite one of the story of the music...his voice is so proud....

  • You can come and listen on my stereo anytime..make sure you bring some beers with you though, and a couple of nice women !!. lol

  • lol he was good in jesus christ superstar as well

  • i didn't see it :S can you send me the url to see it?

  • Amazing song!!!

  • Gillan: The best singer in hard rock no doubt!

  • @caronja70

    Truly no doubt!

  • @caronja70 plus Dio: )

  • Saw this song performed live on the Mr Universe tour and can honestly say it was awsome. Great music from a classic rock band. M & A xxxx

  • An awesome piece of music. An absolutely perfect blend of vocals, piano and guitar. With great, if disturbing, lyrics also.

I heard this on the Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance (RIP) many years ago and am still awestruck by it.

    Just great.

  • This is good stuff! I loved his voice with B.S born again album also

  • Ian Gillan. What a man. And his legacy to rock history through Deep Purple and his solo carrier.

  • Thanks to all of you!!!!

    :D

  • His voice is brilliant. Thanks for uploading this song. :)

  • Great Song!!!!

  • this song is perfect and should have been included on the 'Rocky' soundtrack, think about it...

this is my top numer one song on my best songs ever list...a masterpiece, better even than child in time...(he reach higher note the the ones on child in time, and it is NOT falsetto)

  • this is right, nazarre79-

    this song has soundtrack-quality

    for a great film

  • Mr.nazarre, I like your comments...:))))

Of course, I love my Ian Gillan!!!!

    This is very great song!!!!

  • If I'm not mistaken Colin Towns had already written this song before Gillan discovered him doing session work at the same studio Gillan was working out of. Great partnership though and Mt Universe one of my all time favourites.

  • This song was the reason Gillan and Towns ditched the other members of the "Ian Gillan Band" and formed "Gillan". The snobby jazz musicians poured scorn on this brilliant track, Ian dissagreed and the best hard rock band of the eighties was born.

  • but when they recorded this they already had a different line up to IGB...aka the Japanese album line up...you are mistaken...

  • This track was recorded with a Temporary session line-up with two members of Gillan (Ian and John McCoy) Steve Byrd (Guitar) and Liam Genocky (Drums) completing the group. my comment is a based on a remark Ian Gillan made recently when interviewed on Radio 2.

  • yeah I remember that now the session line up...you are right

  • Thanks mate. isn't it great that grown-ups can discuss amazing music without the idiotic abuse that all the kids on this site resort to.

  • I hear you mate....unbelievable

  • @SuperCrazylulu i raise you 12 internets and say fuck you grown ups,,,,, srry im not a little kid but i just had to say that

  • This Song is so great, that I have no the right words to explain my emotions....

    It is perfect!!!!!

    Ian Gillan Is The King!!!!!

  • wow I never thought to check out Ian's solo stuff, it's very good.thanks 4 posting it.

  • Gillan is Ginius!

  • This is the very last time, Gillan were top-class---and indeed he was in 1979 with Mr. Universe : his own project, a perfect album.

  • No no, it's something between head voice and falsetto - it's used a term strong falsetto, it's not a typic falsetto, this is more difficult and sounds much more better like a scream in this songs - Gillan's speciality :-)

  • Of course it is very high Gillan's falsetto....

    The Best Falsetto Ever!!!!

  • Is that falsetto that he is doing in this song...I think it is very high, very...

Also, this song is one of my favorite of DP and Ian Gillan!

  • such a masterpiece

  • SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • everything is available if you search...

He has done many cd with different band and line-up and with different styles too...

    The most important:

-Cherkazoo and other stories(folk songs originally written for 'the butterfly ball project')

    -Ian Gillan Band (1975-78)(jazz-funk-rock)

    -Gillan (1979-83) (hard rock)

    -Black Sabbath (1983-84)

    -Ian Gillan (89-92) + solo albums in 1997, 2005, and 2009.

There are even some collaborations and many bootlegs.Gilla is a ginius....

  • This is great what did you writte about Ian Gillan, yes He is The Ginius!!!!!

  • how many cd's has Ian Gillan made while solo, and if not all are still available, how many are still able to be purchased on CD?

  • georgef76

the version of fightin' man on mr.universe album is the same!

  • To everyone:

Gillan's highest note reached is D6,(which is two note higher than child in time and one note higher than fightin man)you can find that notes at the end of smoke on the water and on another track.(maybe 'mr.universe')

these are the official cd where to listen them: Gillan

bbc 79-80 on angel air - or - tapes vol I dead of night

    these are the shows:

    1-7: Reading Festival/Friday Rock Show, August 25. 1979

8-12: BBC In Concert, Recorded Sept 19. 1979

  • I love you Mr Ian Gillan!

    You are my GOD!

  • I like the version of this song on Mr Universe more , as it sounds better. Ian screams more at the end and they sound more powerfull. Nobody can hit those high notes like he could , his voice was at it's best back then. I can't believe this song wasn't included in any best of cd's as it's a really good one .

  • There's no words for this

  • Ian is my muse, my inspiration, i,m in a band to.

And Ian is my big example, my hero.

I,m 19 years old, but his voice is imo the best rock voice ever :D .

  • Ian Gillan is a wonderful talented artist. This song is one of the proof.Well done!!!!!!!!

  • My favourite singer ever!!!

  • what a powerful voice has this awesome man!!!

    God bless u Ian.

  • ian gillan does the falsetto.

  • It was B5 but ... who cares, he is the man

  • I can't believe in my ears!!!

He took B6!!! To make you understand...

The antepast note of the Hammond Organ!!!

Gillan is the best singer E-V-E-R

    Long Live Ian

  • this guy influenced people like bruce dickinson to sing xD as well as myself, although i'm no gillan or dickinson aha as well as introduced vocal belting to rock music

    he's a legend xD

    long live gillan =D

  • very beautiful..

  • Brilliant song...

  • great song ,gillan is still the man

  • Brilliant song ,thanks for sharing it.Peace and unconditional love...

  • great song and one of the best guitar solos ive ever heard by steve byrd(check him out on m/s)

  • Ian was God of Screaming. And the legend of its vocal range it's just out of any question... i'm on the knees now... Long Live Ian...

  • Ian is still the most amazing singer!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Insuperable voice ... belting at 6:01 is the best ever made!

  • Definitely one of my favourite songs.

  • This song was written by Colin Towns for (and about)Ian...I don't think Purple would have improved it much. It's a beautiful, mature and evocative piece.

  • imagine how would be this song with john lord, paice, blackmore and glover o_0

  • I've heard better Gillan's songs but this is very nice

  • Nice tune, bad picture

  • yeah, i love this song!
