You don't really need that much permanganate, you can see that quite a bit of it hasn't reacted. The way I usually do it is I pour about 5ml of glycerine in a porcelain crucible and then add about a teaspoon of KMnO4. It flares up nicely.

And yeah, manganese compounds stain like hell. If you get it on your clothes your best bet is to treat it with thiosulfate (Na2S2O3).
