I find it funny how so many on the net will give their basic stock dunlop wah a 10 and think it can't get any better?? anyway, going back to modding wahs, seriously, check out the Whipple inductor! I bought and installed one into my own build wah wah and I compared it to a Red Fasel! The Whipple is smoother and better sounding
I've just bought an old 70's Jen Wah, very much like yours but with no DC Jack and the caps are white and manufactured by "Precond". The resistors are larger than yours too.
I'm planning to perform the mods you show in this vid but am wondering if I need the output buffer? I never plan to use Fuzz but do sometimes use an Overdrive / Distortion box after the wah (I usually use amp overdrive / distortion though). Is the output buffer still of any benefit? Thanks
@blondegraemey Cheers! Any tips for quietening the hiss when the unit is on? (surprisingly it is actually very quiet when switched off and not really tone-sucky at all).
Dunlop's latest Cry Baby wah, the GCB-95, now have a buffer. In your opinion is it worth taking that buffer out or leave it in when mod'ing to true bypass?
@blondegraemey I need to replace the actual footswitch like you mentioned with the true bypass DPDT, and also as estinky mentioned above, replace the power socket with a 'boss' style socket. How easy would it be for a novice to do, ie someone who's knowledge is limited to repairing guitar leads.....er like me! lol
Nice work mate. I want to add that "boss" style power 9v to my vox wah. can you pls explain how I would wire that. much thanks..and keep up great work!
I'm modifying my Jen Super as well, but I'm having trouble finding some parts. Mainly the boss style power socket. If you could point me in the right direction that would be a huggee help!
hi, i got a new cry baby classic yesterday and today it's not working properly, it's kinda rough to rock the top part, as if there was too much friction, and sometimes while i played with it it kinda it the switch and the amp would make no sound, as if it was off, do you know what i should do, i'll probably call the shop and ask them to replace it, but if it's an easy fix i'd like to avoid changing it
i'll definitly do that, ehi what do u think i should get for a more vintage kinda hendrix sound a Vox or another Crybaby classic(which i hope will work fine)?
What second pedal do you mean? Do you think that the wah sounds midrange-less? and "shitty"?
The output buffer mod is to change the input impedance into the next pedal in the chain and it stops the 'howling' that can occur when using an old fuzz like a fuzz face.
It also retains the sweep and the mids.
I can hear the mid frequencies in this clip quite clearly.
no no, you didnt show the orignal to compare to side by side, so how do i know the difference if i canthear it?..the original is shitty with a fuzz hookeid up, so i wanted to see what diference the output buffer made, thx.
I think im having a problem with my wah because it goes from a lot bass to a lot of treble (like you said in the video) even though im not using any pedals after or before the wah. Or could it be my small practice amp? if its the wah is there anyway to solve this? thanks.
Your clean tone song is truly *brilliant*! Would you have any TAB on that beauty? Thanks for sharing. I'd LOVE to hear the whole tune! Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio USA!
LOL! Thanks friend, and thanks for posting the wah wah info. Very kind of you to take the time to share info with people you don't even know! I, for one, appreciate it!
@ic300x I think that those little things that we called errors or nasty sounds are what makes our playing more human... so they made it that way to let us enjoy! :D
For the buffer schem just google: fuzzcentral and look up under vox clyde mccoy wah... First i tought i bought crapy wah from before 89' but now i must build this buffer and everything will work nice!!
Nice mod, did you do it yourself? I've been sourcing the parts for the FuzzCentral mod but I can't decide if I should just use the existing circuit or get a prefab board and do a complete rebuild...also not sure about the fuzz buffer? Is there any loss of tone with the buffer?? Thanks for sharing, sounds great.
Hi, yeah I did the mods myself. There is no loss of tone with the output buffer. It just helps with the input impedance to the next pedal and improves performance if the wah is used with, say, a vintage germanium fuzz. G
I had one of these. It was an "Elvis" model with the white inductor, white pot gear and rack, and white capacitors. It sounded spectacular with a warm & mellow, yet complex tone. It was absolutely mint with not a mark on it. I now wish I had never sold it.
thank's again for another informative video.wah sounds awesome.I would appreciate it if you could tell me where can i find the schematic for the buffer?
hey man!. If you put a resistor (let's say 47k resistor) on the output?. It could solve the problem with the wah before the fuzz?. Good luck.

Sounds like a bunch of unnecessary modifications because It sounds just like any other standard cry baby wah to me.

Hi, you only really need the output buffer if you are getting a problem with 'howling' when using a fuzz box (ie feedback-like sound) G

Can you just say "contomination" again? I dunno, I just like it. (no sarcasm intended)
Thanks for the video, sounds great you almost had me going but no way am I going to mod my original Jen wah, not on this side of the pond anyway.

Not too difficult if you search the web for a good diagram and you can solder. Make sure you have the DC negative to the center of the DC socket. G

You need a suitable socket then you wire it center negative. Do a google search for pedal off board wiring diagram. G

Hey, how can you remove the front or heel hoof to extend the length? Like what Tom Morello did. Please help.
steeltigerzero 3 years ago
Not sure what you mean? It is not really possible to get more 'travel' from the pedal's footplate. Is that what you mean? G
blondegraemey 3 years ago
Never mind I figured it out......

Does Tom use this mod as well as removing the hoof?
I've been trying to find out what has been done to his wah.
Thanks

this mod is amazing! how hard is it to transform your wah into a true bypass? i have a cry baby that i would love to add that mod to.
MChase12345 3 years ago
It is a simple mod. Loads of info on the net, just do a google search. Youtube won't let me post any links here so just try a search. Good luck. G

would a 3 pole double throw switch work for this.

Yes, that's what you need to make it true bypass.
