NATO and the EU are not empires. The former is a military alliance, and the latter is an economic and political union. Despite it's imperial-esque ambitions, the USA is hardly an empire.
some of what u mentioned where not empires, but colonies. spanish, french, british, nato. these are not empires but colonising forces that never managed to intergrate the subjugated ppl into their culture, language, religion. take the caliphate or islamic empire. in a very short time all of syria, north africa, khorasan (afganistan, pakistan, iran, parts of india) etc. accepted islam, adopted arabic (not all), adopted the arabic alphabet and they still use them until now.
Don't you read any history books, in 1788 The netherlands wasn't a part of Spain, it was already independent from 1648, and the persian empire didn't control greece or turkey in 500 AD. That area was part of the Eastern Roman Empire also known as the byzantine empire, you idiot. You have much too learn
I highly doubt anybody actually lived there. It's like people drawing with crayons on a map, declaring vast uninhabitable wild snow covered lands to be theirs... amazing.
It's not a share if it's used for research... Research means non-permanent habitation, which speaks to my point that not even a few people can live on antartica's vast icy wilderness even for a seasonal period of time - hence the term unhabitable.
@Phead128 Whilst it's strange, it's not entirely pointless. A claim on a particular area of Antarctica essentially gives you free reign on any scientific experiments you conduct there, or any study facilities you wish to set up. Britain, France, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina all laid claim to certain areas. The Antarctic Treaty was later enacted, which means the USA and Russia can lay claim to any areas they wish.
In 1918 to more than 140 years the French had left Canada and was no longer part of the empire. I can also see that India appears and in 1918 was not part of the French empire, as they had lost in 1763 as well canada
i think the russian was by far the largest.i know the british owned more square miles of land and stuff but i dont see a bunch of dots scattered over the earth as a united empire

@WolfytheWolf5667 Spain had a previous bloody civil war, which left the country destroyed. GBR never suffered a real war front in its territory, even beyond some bombs in London. GBR wouldn't have done much without USA help. And dispite those mosquitos u speak about, the British still coming to Spain in mass. Not mention to those who are living there (600.000). Btw, where are the natives of North America: Canada and US? I'll tell u: killed by the british pilgrims. Lol. Malaria? Where? Ignorant.
Whatever you say about the British empire it was massive a great achievemnt by a country with little land itself. The British empire created the modern world ( Britain didn't invent slavery and isn't solely to blame)
@elmateeeo "The British empire created the modern world"
Ahah, it's pleasant to forgot all the other europeans empires which did as much as britain. The "modern world" isn't just the "industrialised world". Aaah patriotic people - _ -
@elmateeeo Haha, The British Empire created this world? Only you? That's a very egocentric statement. There were many european nations before the British Empire who were in scene. Keep up with ur anglo-saxon propaganda, but u won't fool with that to the French, the Spanish or the Russians.
@nrjelley "how can the USA have an Empire? You need a monarch to have an Empire!"
So the Romans didn't have an empire then. Hmm. The so-called "Athenian Empire" obviously couldn't be one, the British and French stopped being an Empire long before they lost their territories.
@TerraDepicter I'm sorry perhaps I should have said you need a type of monarch government to have an empire. Britain has a constitutional monarchy, France used to be a monarchy, Russia used to be a monarchy, BUT USA never had a monarchy therefore cannot be an empire. Republics dont have empires!
@nrjelley Except when this republic is attacked by all its neighbours (cf. french 1st republic turning into the first french empire). Well, overall you're right, but the definition of an "empire" has always been complicated you know...
@StivenMKD Alexander was Greek. Ancient Macedonia lies within modern Greece (not actually the modern state stupidly named Macedonia). He spoke Greek (Attic), descended from the same ethnic and cultural background. Meets all the criteria actually.
@StivenMKD Are you fucking kidding me? Is that really your response? My government doesn't write ancient Greek history. Go look up where the capital of ancient Macedonia, Pella, is.
@Legomakerx Ah geez.. Ok. Ancient Macedonia has nothing to do with the modern state named Macedonia. The ancient kingdom actually existed within the borders of the modern state of Greece. By ancient standards, he was Greek. Part of the Greek world, spoke Greek, had ethnic and cultural ties with other Greeks, etc., etc.
Tell me, would you say Leonidas was not Greek because he was Spartan? Would you say Socrates was not Greek because he was Athenian?
@Legomakerx So... Are you asking me to re-write my last comment? The point is, however you define what it means to be "Greek", Alexander the Great fits the bill.
lol dude wtf british empire 1922 they got antarctica? yea i bet they was like: hmm lets see here's ice aaaaaand ice .. oh yea jackpot this is a real good colony ..
Actually the Persians invaded Greece and burned Athens twice. Remember that movie 300 ? It was loosely based on fact. While the Persians left Greece, it was mainly because they realized there was nothing worth looting. The Greeks eventually ejected the Persians, but the Persians made it to Greece in large numbers.
Actually Spain did technically own large parts of what is now the continental USA for centuries. Of course they did very little with it. Originally the USA was only a strip of 13 coastal states on the Eastern seaboard, and the rest of the continent was divided up between Britain, France, Spain and Russia.
