Amazing goal. That ballet guy is so creepy. He's got a horrible paedophile glint in his eye and when he says "Berishinov, Rudolf Nueryev" it sounds like some nasty drunk trying to chatting up girls at a middle class party.
Espn classic showed the full 90 minutes of this game recently. The dutch were very dirty,Scotland were denied two stonewall penalty's early on and were cheated..With stronger referees and a bit of luck Scotland could have won the world cup in 78 as the players had the quality, the self belief and the passion.
I was at the game in Mendoza that day, pity Scotland did not play like that in the other 2 games in Cordoba, as you know Holland were unlucky not the win the world cup that year
@legandrydirk Lisbon Lions, Andy Murray, Rangers in '72, Aberdeen '83, Alex Ferguson, Matt Busby, Kenny Dalglish, all the inventors, Uncle Sam came from Greenock, Alan Wells, Jim Watt, Scott Harrison, Ken Buchanan, Sam Torrance, Arthur Conan Doyle, RL Stevenson Jackie Stewart, Big Sean, Ewan Kenobi and Robert Carlyle....
Of course I'm forgetting al the rest cos I need to go to my bed lol VOTE YES : )
@cleverfeller japan is comparable in size to scotland is it??? japan has a population of 120 million you fudd. israel is massively subsidised by america. new zealand is quite a good comparison though, we should be doing at least as good as them. our tax system isn't quite as friendly to new business as theirs is, and our property prices are too great. cut corporation taxes and invest in science and engineering is what i say!!
@cleverfeller japan, israel or new zealand??? what a strange group of countries to compare scotland to. scotland, like the rest of britain, has relied heavily on it's brilliant few- it's inventors, scientists.. geniuses. japan has relied on heavy discipline and clever working systems which over time has made it strong. but i'd take our best over the best of any other country in the world. we probably have the best and the worst in scotland.
(not so) cleverfella, you are only partially right but on many of the points you made are way off beam. I'll let you figure it out, seeing as your such a 'smart ass'.
@cleverfeller You can only live by your means. In other words, Scotland is a small nation, always has been. It's 1/4 of a union but 1/10 as populous as the largest nation within it. In 1978 we had great players, world class players, capable of winning things. They didn't, but get over it, that's football.
This goal was the icing on the cake of what was a fantastic win against Holland, we played with flair and panache.
This goal is conclusive proof that we had those capabilities.
I always had the doubt about this goal that renton says, and recently i saw in the resume of the best goals with the style that Javier Hernandez did against France, and number two was from Gemmill, cheers from Mexico to Scotland, we are not champions but our people is the better support, Viva Escocia!
@cutterTML it was part of a channel 4 program, aired in 2002 prior to the world cup in Japan and South Korea, called "100 of the world cup's most memorable moments"
@cutterTML unfortunately not. i have a copy i recorded onto video put it is not on 4od and there has not been any rerun that I am aware of sorry. it was absolutely fantastic though and hopefully they will do something similar before this year's world cup!
the triple jump is based on the hop skip & a jump thats how highlanders crossed a river its clear that wee archie spent his summer up here in the north lol god bless ye archie PRIDE!
As a kid this was the very first football match I ever saw on the telly. I remember sitting on my living room floor and watching Archie's goal like it was yesterday.
Great, great goal but so typically Scottish in the sense that we can produce the odd flash of improvised magic, upset the big boys and yet either through lack of consistancy, not quite enough quality, pressing the self-destruct button or just plain bad luck...we never quite manage it. If we eventually learn from our mistakes and if lady luck pays a visit (just for once) then the world will look on in awe!

That was a incredible goal indeed! As a child - I was about 12 at the time - I remember thinking: wow, the Scotts are going to do it. My country will go down! Before that goal Gemmill had also hit the bar with a great header. But luckily for us Johnny Repp came out of nowhere to score the 3-2. We went into the second round. In 1978 Scotland gave away the tournament by underestimating Peru in their first match. They lost and never recovered from it. What a shame!
It's laughable to think now but in 1978, the Scottish public really did believe we were in with a chance of lifting The World Cup. We did have a very good team though.

Oh, then you were cocky and let your big heads get in the way of progression, then. Never made it out of the first round of a World Cup or a European Championships tournament. Pretty much says it all, as far as I'm concerned.
Football played by instinct is about solving a problem in a slit second, Archie was presented with a chance to do it and dit it perfectly and beautifully, from the moment the ball broke his way he only had the chance to look up when he had the keeper to beat, and by then the hard bit was done. SIMPLY A GREAT GOAL
Sorry Scot Gemmill, not Scott...only the one T

I've met Archie Gemmill and in no way shape or form does he resemble a ballet dancer.
This is probably one of the best goals ever.
By the way, what is Scott Gemmill doing these days....I miss Nottingham, sometimes.

Great for the Scots, offcourse.
If you never win something, you hang to those moments. Great.
