    Lol. Seems like Newsted's bass stood out the most on the Black Album. I can hardly hear Trujillo's bass on Death Magnetic. The bass always seems to get drowned out on most Metallica records. You can hear some of Cliff's bass, but not that much. We all know the bass is there, it just doesn't stand out as much as it could.

  • @shyrowstand Actually in songs such as One the bass was pretty quiet in the mix out of respect for Cliff i think. At the very least metallica didn´t wanna go around showing off the new bassist by having his bass real loud in the mixes especially after Cliff´s passing.

  • @jredguy they're not wrong. the bass is just so low you couldn't it before the introduction of guitar hero and the single track releases. what there is in the tab books and on the net is just an approximation and guessing by other people. THIS is the real deal.

  • @Alantime95 Yeah the pic seems manipulated or something :D Coz nowadays 4-6 knobs is pretty much max. But that might be an über custom made Aria bass for Jason or something. Like knobs for Hi, Low, Mid, Blend? Master volume, Master Tone. What else can there be?

  • @R0bb89 The bass on the picture is an Alembic. Jason played them mostly live, and yes they were custom made. The bass you hear on the record is a Spector NS-2 4 string.

  • @noneofyourconcern BASSES: He used a slew of different basses, but the main ones were a 1981 Spector NS-2 4-string (used on the majority of the album for his main bass tone), a Wal Mk 1 4-string (used on songs that needed more of a "chug" bass sound; he used the Wal on "Don't Tread On Me."), 1958 Fender P-Bass (used on songs that needed a more traditional sound; he used the P-Bass on "The Unforgiven")...

  • @noneofyourconcern ...and a Hamer Chaparral 12-string bass (erroneously referred to as a Warwick; Jason used the 12-string bass on minor-key songs for effect, such as the chimey tone on the downbeats of every phrase in the heavy intro in "Wherever I May Roam"). AMPS: Vintage Ampeg SVT heads & 8x10" cabs, a Mesa/Boogie 1x15" cab, a Trace Elliot 2x10" combo for mid-high end tones, an Ampeg Isovent cab (2x10" and a backwards-facing 1x15"), and a Fender folded-horn 1x18" cab.

Just the sound you want, with pick, it's only easier to learn to play fast, when with fingers it's a bit easier to coordinate with the strings when you start. Both have their good sides. most end up with fingers since it sound better with most songs, and doesen't sound so... "sharp" with no other instruments. Usually those who want to go the easy way choose the pick. I know bass players who're faster with fingers than most people are on pick...

  • @XxKasekexX I'm twice or three times faster playing with my fingers but I prefer playing with a pick...I like that sharp attack that you get naturally with the pick (to get that kind of attack with your fingers you have to go harris' way xd) but maybe it's because I use a lot of guitar techniques and need a pick, or baybe it's just because I learned how to play bass with a pick and don't give a damn what others think :)

  • @DaveInVein Yes, you are correct there. Flea and Cliff have very different styles. I have never seen Cliff (or anyone) play slap bass as fast as flea, but Cliff can freaking shred on a bass! They are both great.

  • @slythe109 Alex Webster or the bassist of Dying Fetus (who's name eludes me at present) are insane. Also, Andy Saxton is a pretty fast player, but I think he uses a double slap technique? And of course, Les Claypool and his slap cover of MoP are amazing.

  • @5fdprulze100 They are the most successful metal band (if AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin are not metal and in my opinion they're not). Metallica has sold about 100 million records so they have sold as much as Kiss, Guns 'n' Roses and Scorpions (but those bands are also half-metal so they are more like hard rock). So Metallica is the best selling metal band.

  • Pick bass is cool. I like Jason Newsted and Duff McKagan. And when I play bass I use pick most of the time. I play guitar at home but bass in a band.

He might be a good bassist (and he is) but I prefer Cliff and Jason. They might not be as skillful as Trujillo but I still prefer them. And Jason was the most accurate bassist in Metallica. He played very accurately.

I have to said, the probably most underrated is Martin Turner, from the (old) Wishbone Ash. Search for FUBB, Handy, You Rescue Me, Ballad of the Beacon and heard with your own ears! But, as a word of warning, if you do probably he'll be your new standart to measure against! Cheers!

He was always coming up with new ideas (see Call of Ktulu, Orion, For Whom The Bell Tolls). They downed the volume of Jason in AJFA 'cause they want to send a clear (rude) mensage to him: "You'll never replace Cliff!". Martin Turner, as far as i know, never used distortion to sound like guitar, just plain bass (not trolling anyone). He was the leading force behind them, just like Burton was.

  • Why does everyone ask for tabs? Don't use tablature. Learn it by ear.

  • all i can say is they were all good every bass player metallica has ever had has been good and i am learning bass myself and i idol them all because they were all brilliant everyone of them had a seperate sound and all the sounds sounded good so yeah

I mean there are so many more bassist that are great, but never better than the other, Les Claypool, Flea, Feildy, COME ONE ALL GREAT in there own way.
