Lol. Seems like Newsted's bass stood out the most on the Black Album. I can hardly hear Trujillo's bass on Death Magnetic. The bass always seems to get drowned out on most Metallica records. You can hear some of Cliff's bass, but not that much. We all know the bass is there, it just doesn't stand out as much as it could.
@MrRuckasnuckas9000 Well duh, dude. I always thought that all those supposed "bassists" after Cliff were only myths. This right here is startling evidence against that notion, however.
@Paunk8452 HE dont fit metallica better than Cliff far from Cliff was metallica you asshole!! you have not watched any interviews or any docmentary about metallica talking the old days if you say jason fit metallica better, Jason was perfect man to take over, but far from as good as Cliff.
@Martyfriedman001 both of you guys are wrong Jason was the worst thing to happen to Metallica next to cliffs death right after he got there they sold out worst decision in my eyes
@jredguy plz tell me where i can actually hear the bass clearly in the early metallica albums plz because i cant hear it clear with my best headphones. n they have a bass boost in them
@shyrowstand Actually in songs such as One the bass was pretty quiet in the mix out of respect for Cliff i think. At the very least metallica didn´t wanna go around showing off the new bassist by having his bass real loud in the mixes especially after Cliff´s passing.
@jredguy they're not wrong. the bass is just so low you couldn't it before the introduction of guitar hero and the single track releases. what there is in the tab books and on the net is just an approximation and guessing by other people. THIS is the real deal.
Who cares if people play with a pick? Playing an instrument is all about making music and making music is all about making new sounds. They day you limit your musical creativity because you have some stupid mindset about picks of all things. Is the day you should just lay the guitar down, because you're a moron.
yeah i dont have a clue why people think playing with a pick matters, a pickis simply about the tone you want to acheive, however that being said i think it's obvious cliff burton is more talented soley due to the fact of how many hit songs he wrote.
guys it the bassists preference to use a pick or his hands and it doesnt matter for example i use my hands cuz i cant make it out with a pick but jason uses a pick and he is a so fucking ecxellent bassist for me and as the guy on the top comments said even if you play with a picece of glass you are a damn bassist

well i play it a little different, goes very along with rhytim guitar.....soon im gonna upload a cover and you people decide is if good or bad....and i dont use tabs -.-"
@Alantime95 Yeah the pic seems manipulated or something :D Coz nowadays 4-6 knobs is pretty much max. But that might be an über custom made Aria bass for Jason or something. Like knobs for Hi, Low, Mid, Blend? Master volume, Master Tone. What else can there be?
@R0bb89 The bass on the picture is an Alembic. Jason played them mostly live, and yes they were custom made. The bass you hear on the record is a Spector NS-2 4 string.
I wanna learn to play that song as well as jason does. Oh and @WiplashXD i play with both depending on the song and i kinda prefer the pick because it's unique sound
@noneofyourconcern BASSES: He used a slew of different basses, but the main ones were a 1981 Spector NS-2 4-string (used on the majority of the album for his main bass tone), a Wal Mk 1 4-string (used on songs that needed more of a "chug" bass sound; he used the Wal on "Don't Tread On Me."), 1958 Fender P-Bass (used on songs that needed a more traditional sound; he used the P-Bass on "The Unforgiven")...
@noneofyourconcern ...and a Hamer Chaparral 12-string bass (erroneously referred to as a Warwick; Jason used the 12-string bass on minor-key songs for effect, such as the chimey tone on the downbeats of every phrase in the heavy intro in "Wherever I May Roam"). AMPS: Vintage Ampeg SVT heads & 8x10" cabs, a Mesa/Boogie 1x15" cab, a Trace Elliot 2x10" combo for mid-high end tones, an Ampeg Isovent cab (2x10" and a backwards-facing 1x15"), and a Fender folded-horn 1x18" cab.
@HUSoldier01 It has nothing to do with tempo... Just the sound you want, with pick, it's only easier to learn to play fast, when with fingers it's a bit easier to coordinate with the strings when you start. Both have their good sides. most end up with fingers since it sound better with most songs, and doesen't sound so... "sharp" with no other instruments. Usually those who want to go the easy way choose the pick. I know bass players who're faster with fingers than most people are on pick...
@XxKasekexX I'm twice or three times faster playing with my fingers but I prefer playing with a pick...I like that sharp attack that you get naturally with the pick (to get that kind of attack with your fingers you have to go harris' way xd) but maybe it's because I use a lot of guitar techniques and need a pick, or baybe it's just because I learned how to play bass with a pick and don't give a damn what others think :)
@marco7centurion Wasn't saying that it's bad if you play with pick, just pointing out the good and bad sides (I couldn't write the whole thing hence having limited writing space.)
I hate how ignorant some people are. Good music is good music. Doesn't matter how hard, easy, soft, or heavy it is. Jason and Cliff were both excellent musicians and thats all that matters. Who gives a shit if you play with flesh or plastic, a musical note doesn't discriminate. And if you disagree with this, your a close-minded prick.
@DaveInVein Yes, you are correct there. Flea and Cliff have very different styles. I have never seen Cliff (or anyone) play slap bass as fast as flea, but Cliff can freaking shred on a bass! They are both great.
@slythe109 Alex Webster or the bassist of Dying Fetus (who's name eludes me at present) are insane. Also, Andy Saxton is a pretty fast player, but I think he uses a double slap technique? And of course, Les Claypool and his slap cover of MoP are amazing.
@MrDragonStomp WRONG! Playing with fingers you getting more natural sound. And it sound good, James said to Robert when they accepted him in band that Metallica sound better with him. Just because of his tehnique of playing.
@CROGrof BULLCRAP! i play bass sometimes, sometimes with my fingers sometimes with a pick that just depends on what song i'm playing this song i would play with a pick, and for whom the bell tolls with my fingers so that's that~!
@5fdprulze100 They are the most successful metal band (if AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin are not metal and in my opinion they're not). Metallica has sold about 100 million records so they have sold as much as Kiss, Guns 'n' Roses and Scorpions (but those bands are also half-metal so they are more like hard rock). So Metallica is the best selling metal band.
@CROGrof Trolling? I don't like Trujillo because I don't think he belongs to Metallica. He's not a Metallica guy. And he looks like a monkey. He might be a good bassist (and he is) but I prefer Cliff and Jason. They might not be as skillful as Trujillo but I still prefer them. And Jason was the most accurate bassist in Metallica. He played very accurately.
@CROGrof you re a motherfucking loser because you compare bassists at the way they play not the sound they give. And those three kept metallica up all those years making the most successful metal band in history. So fuck off.
@BBombers2425 i appreciate jason newsted, my mate doesn't like him only cos of his stage presence :S I think Metallica were assholes for how they treated jason when he first joined Metallica
@BBombers2425 No, it not. Look at the numbers of views. Sad, because almost no one but bass players know his talent (people look at Anesthesia and think "what did you mean, its not guitar?"). I have to said, the probably most underrated is Martin Turner, from the (old) Wishbone Ash. Search for FUBB, Handy, You Rescue Me, Ballad of the Beacon and heard with your own ears! But, as a word of warning, if you do probably he'll be your new standart to measure against! Cheers!
@AdlerMow my point is that people look at metallica and hear cliff burton and go - omg he's the best. they look at rob trujillo and go - omg he's like cliff. people hear the songs jason wrote and go - that song has bass? im saying that people don't realize how great a bassist he was, or how he never got to write on a metal album (he didnt write on AJFA at all). i don't know who you're talking about; ill look him up. but i dont see myself jumping off the metallica bandwagon anytime soon
@BBombers2425 Nor i will! I love metallica and seriously, they were never the same again after his death! He was always coming up with new ideas (see Call of Ktulu, Orion, For Whom The Bell Tolls). They downed the volume of Jason in AJFA 'cause they want to send a clear (rude) mensage to him: "You'll never replace Cliff!". Martin Turner, as far as i know, never used distortion to sound like guitar, just plain bass (not trolling anyone). He was the leading force behind them, just like Burton was.
all i can say is they were all good every bass player metallica has ever had has been good and i am learning bass myself and i idol them all because they were all brilliant everyone of them had a seperate sound and all the sounds sounded good so yeah
no bass player is better than the other. its all about style. Jason, Cliff, Rob... ALL GREAT in their own right, or else they wouldnt be in the most successful metal band of all time. I mean there are so many more bassist that are great, but never better than the other, Les Claypool, Flea, Feildy, COME ONE ALL GREAT in there own way. As a bass player i look up to any bass player, we all can learn from each other. Oh and also... GO BIG 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can u stop sAying cliff wuz insane we get he is good jeeezzz and stop the argument with a pick on bass gimme one reason y u can't use a pick Jason in my opinion is better
@iamafreebird100 Cliff wasn't better then Jason and Jason wasn't better then Cliff. Why? Because They play bass their own way. And thats what makes them both better :P

@BBombers2425 i appreciate jason newsted, my mate doesn't like him only cos of his stage presence :S I think Metallica were assholes for how they treated jason when he first joined Metallica

@BBombers2425 maybe the most underappreciated bassist is Krist Novoselic from Nirvana...

@riley8377 I appreciate him, too
Nirvana96kidfly 6 months ago

BBombers2425 5 months ago
@BBombers2425 Nor i will! I love metallica and seriously, they were never the same again after his death! He was always coming up with new ideas (see Call of Ktulu, Orion, For Whom The Bell Tolls). They downed the volume of Jason in AJFA 'cause they want to send a clear (rude) mensage to him: "You'll never replace Cliff!". Martin Turner, as far as i know, never used distortion to sound like guitar, just plain bass (not trolling anyone). He was the leading force behind them, just like Burton was.

@AdlerMow the hugeness of metallica amplified people hating jason

God that that tone is annoying. They turned down Les Claypool for this smuck? Christ...
RottingHands 8 months ago
@RottingHands
I don't think so... fits perfect to the other instruments and overall sound.
Les Claypool has a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT style... he wouldn't have fit into Metallica.

Why does everyone ask for tabs? Don't use tablature. Learn it by ear.

all i can say is they were all good every bass player metallica has ever had has been good and i am learning bass myself and i idol them all because they were all brilliant everyone of them had a seperate sound and all the sounds sounded good so yeah
RagingConza281 8 months ago
no bass player is better than the other. its all about style.
