This was as good as 'Runaway' - maybe musically even better - but for whatever reason there are 0000s of Del Shannon fans that will never have heard this before. I don't know about you but I hope, I truely hope, some day, classics like this will be spoken about in the wider musical media.
Bobby Vee knew and recognised hence his stunning version recorded a few years ago along with Cry Myself to Sleep.
the reason this song wasnt a hit is because del changed record labels london to stateside this was onlondon the radio stations chose to play mary jane on stateside label both songs released at same time this one was virtually ignored shame much better than mary jane miss you del you were the best
This song was the flipside of "Sue's Gotta Be Mine" on the Berlee label. It was Del's own label that he started after leaving Bigtop. I always liked this one and I own virtually all of his vinyl records.
Actually this was his second 45 on Berlee, and the flipside of this was Time Of The Day. The flipside of Sue's Gonna Be Mine (only british pressings showed the title as Sue's Gotta Be Mine) is Now She's Gone. Both discs distributed by the Diamond record label.
Oops...thanks for setting me straight. I'm in the US and I own both these singles. I haven't looked at them in years because I have them on CD. Faulty memory on my part. I saw Del live in '61...he was great.
Whenever he came to Nebraska I went to see him, he was very talented playing solo's on his guitar too, first time I was shocked to see a so called oldies act sound so damn good "live" it was like a studio recording
@kansasbadger Del is a Legend , His voice the falsetto was unique to him. His music will never die. Del , I'm 33 yo and the first time I heard your songs runaway, hats off to larry I had to discover your entire music repertoire and became a fan of yours. One song that really shows how deep Del can sing is "Life is but nothing". Del you are always unforgotten and a true Legend !!!!
This was the A side of his second Berlee 45. The promo 45 shows this side as the Plug side. Flipside is Time Of The Day, an equally good record. He was on his own label distributed by a label run by New York mobsters who didn't care if they had music hits....and his music was not promoted in the middle of the british invasion thus the lack of more hits.
This is amazing, DelShannon was amazing. What an artist. And the no dislikes here show me people still have sense!

Del had a strong voice all his own. I don't think he could be compared to anyone else, or vice versa.

Yet another. It's a cliché, but his songs really do get better with age.

Bobby Vee does a sensational version of this song (and Cry Myself to sleep with Brian Hyland) - check it on the album 'I wouldnt Change a thing'

For me Del will always be as he is at frames 1.22- 125 or so, that big guitar in his hands and that haircut !

Never intended to be a hit - B side. Absolutely great song which should be up there with his best-remembered songs.
