I think we're supposed to see steerpike as the only constant. Everyone else is duplicitous, stupid, ignorant, depraved, odd or inconsistent. He's the only stable centre character with a....goal?
i'm curious ,are we supposed to want steerpike to suceed, is he meant to be the protagonist, obviously albeit a flawed one or is he in the novel the antagonist? or are we meant to root for him to be on the cusp of sucess, to see , yes he coukld have done it only for him to fail? anyway is he the hero or villain in this or the book, cant tell?
It's too bad Titus hates Steerpike, I imagine they would have got on. They both seem to hate what the family represents. Steerpike wants equality and Titus, wants freedom. I think maybe Titus hates Steerpike because he thinks he represents what he hates? Not to mention Steerpike has been naughty. I'm not sure, this is my first time seeing this.
So far from what Ihave seen the Groans are all a pack of spoiled selfish people... Steerpike became what he is because of being treated like crap and called names. No one ever treated him kndly. Not one, they all had bad names for him...
I wouldn't say they were spoiled considering the emptiness of their own lives - the point is that none of them (except the middle class Prunesquallors) understand how to love until it's too late (they're just as hurtful to each other as they are to Steerpike. More so in fact). Their real crime is indifference to humanity rather than deliberate tyranny. Steerpike is a whole other matter! I love a good rebel too, but he is evil. Like Communist rebels - good ideals, horrible methods.
Actually, I take some of that back as I was really talking about the books. Steerpike has no excuses for his evil, though. The only reason people called him names was because they realised he was pretending to be respectful etc. Even Fuschia gets it, though she has a crush on him.
I didnt read the books, I only saw the movie, if Steerpike had found one person to treat him respectfully and not call him Slug and some of the other names and treated him so badly, (ALL talking of the movie of course, this is the only view I have of him) possibly he could have been different. But how can he not be so damned sarcastic and full of hate? treated as he is and he IS better than all of them, he gets things done, he goes after what he wants... more to follow...
Titus is such a weak ruler (remember I have only this view i saw in movie) He HATES Gormenghast... Not so with Steerpike, he loves it, he loves the tradition and would have been a ruler who kept the traditions....
Yes Titus is a weak and spoiled ruler but I think it's plain that Steerpike hates Gormenghast as much as Titus does, he just shows it in a different way (by avenging himself on the Groans - ironic as any *direct* harm done to him was by other servants, not the family). Even if he did love it, wanting to keep the traditions would not make him good as they were silly and antiquated.
It's interesting; you could say Titus hated Gormenghast because he born a Groan and Steerpike because he wasn't.
P.S. Titus runs out on his own people, Ive heard he comes back years later but that was another cowardly act.... All this is what I got out of the movie, never having read the books, dont think I want to read the books now... Did you see the movie Perfume, Story of a murderer?
Titus goes to explore the world beyond Gormenghast, which isn't cowardly in itself, especially as Gormenghast doesn't really need a ruler, it just needs an Earl (like the modern UK) and no one knows what's out there. What he finds explains a lot about Gormenghast, tbh.
And I think I prefer cowardice to someone who manipulates and murders! Steerpike is definitely the anti-hero. Like Wilson in 1984, he starts a rebel but gets more corrupted than the Groans ever were.
I agree he should be bitter, but that doesn't make him good. His actions are evil and worse are done to assert power - a sort of class based revenge (he doesn't really get anything done eg like reforms. He just terrifies and tries to control it's inhabitants starting with Cora and Clarice). It's understandable, but wrong. It's also ironic because the Groans don't care, not even about each other.Their evil lies in their indifference. They deserved a shake-up; doesn't mean it wasn't cruel.
@VercingetorixXIII I don't think spoiled and selfish so much as indifferent perhaps. If you read the books you would get an idea of how hopeless and awful things seem in a place that is ruled by tradition so much that the people stuck in it long to get out. Fuchsia liked Steerpike I think and he used her as he used everyone.
@UmiKruspe89 To be quite literally accurate, Le Fantôme de l'Opéra looks like a rotting corpse who occasionally found leisure to don a black silk mask over his entire face.
Steerpike was hot until he wore pony tails now tutitus is hot

Sorry to be vulgar but I just have to say there isn't a single bit of Neve McIntosh (Lady Fuchsia) where I wouldn't like to put my tongue.

@sumoni I think steerpike's lying when he says he wants equality. at least, in the book all he wants is power (for himself, fo course ^-^)
