The books TVD is based on were released in 1991, while the Twilight books started to pop up from 2005. Vampire stories has been around for a long time (books, movies), no point in putting the Twilight movies on a pedestal.

Out of all the shows, movies, books, or series of any kind that is about vampires Twilight is the youngest. Nobody followed Twilight, it became famous because it met a demand and now the demand is getting better and better stuff like Vampire Diaries and True Blood it's what people want and don't hate just because that doesn't include you
