Tanpura is more than a drone. The sound of a tanpura heard LIVE is the richest dynamic sound I can think of on one instrument. What it to the tonal beauty of any performance whether vocal or instrumental has to be heard to be believed. What the vibrato does to enhance tone is achieved by the tanpura.
And you must know the mind boggling intonation and pitch alignment of those who practice with the tanpura daily, all throughout their lives. The best instrument for developing a musical ear.
